A Life Once Lost breaks up

Bob Meadows A Life Once Lost

Metal Chris

This has slipped under the radar for the past week, but A Life Once Lost frontman Bob Meadows recently sat down with the Doylestown, PA edition of the blog Fig to discuss his transition from musician to carpenter. The interview (which you can read here) seems mundane enough until you get several questions into the interview, at which point the following exchange takes place:

This time in your life also marks the end of your popular metal band, A Life Once Lost, fill me in on this new phase. Why leave the band after 14 years of success? I feel like I need to step back a little bit from that to just better myself as a person. I just felt like I wasn't really able to handle that aspect of being in a band or that commitment. I really had to put so many things aside. I'm 33 years old now and I feel like my life has been on hold since I was 19. I'm not complaining about where it's taken me, it's been pretty awesome. I've been able to put out 6 records, film videos, see countries I would have never seen before and I've taken a band further than a lot of people have in their lifetime. It's a lot of fun and it feels really rewarding. ... Is this the first time you're speaking about the band break-up to the press? This is the first time. It's not easy to talk about because it's still so fresh. You do something for such a long time, it ends and you're just kinda like…shit. What now? It's wild. Ending it, to me, is like being released from prison. I have to step out into the world and find myself again. All I knew was getting in a van, sleeping on floors and playing shows at shitty bars for 14 years. But, at the same time, I wouldn't have changed anything. While I was on the road, all my friends were going to school, becoming teachers and doctors, having kids…all that. I'm really envious. But, the stories I have are pretty awesome. It's really hard to NOT do something that you've trained yourself to do, for so long. It's hard to break habits like that.

There you have it: after roughly 14 years and six albums together, A Life Once Lost has disbanded. One of Lambgoat's first album reviews was our January 2001 review of ALOL's debut release, and they've been a part of the scene for the entirety of our existence. We're sad to see them go.

"Ending it is like stepping out of prison" comparing being in the band to being in prison, sounds like it was a good time.

anonymous 7/12/2013 9:51:34 AM

awesome band

anonymous 7/12/2013 9:53:24 AM

i guess meshuggah aren't popular enough anymore to be shamelessly ripped off by american white boys who listen to too much metalcore.

anonymous 7/12/2013 9:54:51 AM

Now you can get a job at hot topic!~

anonymous 7/12/2013 9:56:59 AM

great band

anonymous 7/12/2013 9:57:13 AM

from musician to carpenter sounds very promising

anonymous 7/12/2013 10:00:24 AM

"from musician to carpenter" Jesus is stoked

anonymous 7/12/2013 10:02:58 AM

its about fcking time. no more equipment malfunctions on stage to cut into other bands sets. shit band and shit dudes.

LoydChristmas 7/12/2013 10:04:08 AM

Karen Carpenter, Jesus, and Lowes are stoked.

anonymous 7/12/2013 10:20:38 AM

What's your band done? This band opened up the door for half of the unoriginal bullshit you listen to today. The lineup up until around 2011 was solid ad better than your shitty band. One jerk ruined it for everyone and there's no real hiding who that was. And as far as the mesuggah comparisons go....please dude. They were the first bad that had the balls to bring the influence into American metal...Now it's a become a whole fckin genre. Go listen to some more Emmure gay.

anonymous 7/12/2013 10:27:14 AM

loved A Life Once Lost. those dudes could jam and smoke some serious weed.

anonymous 7/12/2013 10:31:46 AM

Bob Meadows = Robert Meadows Robert Carpenter = Bob Carpenter Carpenter = Bob Meadows

anonymous 7/12/2013 10:38:06 AM

dont have kids, dont be a lawyer, dont be a doctor, dont be a politician or a teacher.. being a musician is better than all of those. theres no future in union trades, no security for your ass, no guaranteed NOTHIN. wheres your god

anonymous 7/12/2013 10:38:29 AM

Their entire "comeback" and last release was a total fcking joke.

This music was written among musicians not in front of a computer screen either. Most of you are either too young to know or too stupid to realize this band really inspired a large portion of your gay djent scene. This scene sucks, all of you ass clowns have never produced anything musically worth while anyways, which is why im not surprised half of you gays sit here and talk shit all day.. Ill see you on your long journey to the middle. Good luck and no this isnt a member of ALOL

why now? why not 14 years ago?

anonymous 7/12/2013 11:21:42 AM

HURRY UP WITH MY DAMN CROISSANTS!

anonymous 7/12/2013 11:33:26 AM

14 years of sleeping on floors... You should have quit 13 3/4 years ago. What could compel a band to continue that way for so long?

anonymous 7/12/2013 11:36:30 AM

"14 years of sleeping on floors... You should have quit 13 3/4 years ago. What could compel a band to continue that way for so long?" I dunno, maybe pssy and beer? Dork.

anonymous 7/12/2013 11:40:07 AM

"garnered rabid fans world-wide for the past 14 years."

gorillatriscuits 7/12/2013 12:04:21 PM

I had a feeling this was going to happen. Great band, played my last show opening for them and DEP. its crazy, to see all the bands that i got into when i was like, 13 and my high school years, just end. Especially amongst all the garbage that is out today. fck.

anonymous 7/12/2013 12:08:33 PM

total bummer

anonymous 7/12/2013 12:09:24 PM

There's no 401(k) in hardcore, brah.

anonymous 7/12/2013 12:23:07 PM

Glad I got to see these dudes in NYC with my best friends on my birthday in March. Definitely was time to end though.

anonymous 7/12/2013 12:52:33 PM

The videos I saw from a few months ago seemed weak. Once the drummer left it was over. Loved seeing these guys all the time in the mid 2000's.

phob0phile 7/12/2013 1:20:03 PM

Why are you gays so scared and posting anonymously??? Acting real brave behind a computer screen. Come out and say who you are little pussies!! Probably get your ass kicked with that big ol pssy!

phob0phile 7/12/2013 1:21:14 PM

"its about fcking time. no more equipment malfunctions on stage to cut into other bands sets. shit band and shit dudes." This is the prime example of being a pssy. If you got something to say, put your name you scared gay.

anonymous 7/12/2013 1:35:51 PM

It's nice to see this thread garner about 50% positive/supportive comments compared to Lambgoat's typical 5%. Loved these fcking dudes and loved a ton of their tracks. Legends in my eyes. Good luck in the Meadows, Bob. -Chad Fjerstad

anonymous 7/12/2013 2:00:00 PM

All this tough talk.....a life once lost...Forth Plague and the subsequent albums always set you apart....that's evident by the misconceptions/criticisms. ..I rem seeing these dudes at Metro in Wilkes barre...then yrs later on a lot bigger stages...It sucks you're hanging it up but I( AND A LOT OF fckING PPL ) thank you dudes for the great art

anonymous 7/12/2013 2:14:49 PM

Get your ass kicked with that big ol pssy

anonymous 7/12/2013 2:24:14 PM

LOL @ "A Shed Once Built"

anonymous 7/12/2013 2:43:31 PM

I post on lambgoat im so hard, I live in my parents bastufft and make stupid comments on news that I know nothing about. blah blah blah oh my dads home time to go stick my finger in his ass for more money to pay for my shit life.

anonymous 7/12/2013 3:01:50 PM

"Most of you are either too young to know or too stupid to realize this band really inspired a large portion of your gay djent scene." And that shit sucks as bad as ALOL. Influential doesn't mean good. Kind of funny the threats and tough guy attitudes of people defending this band. Didn't the singer routinely get his asskicked for being a piece of garbage?

anonymous 7/12/2013 3:05:39 PM

it was always cool seeing these dudes shred it up when I saw them live regularly between 01 and 05

anonymous 7/12/2013 3:06:12 PM

No surprise here, their last album fcking sucked. P.S. You gays with usernames are just as anonymous as everyone else here

anonymous 7/12/2013 4:47:54 PM

well.....shit. last album did suck, great band before that though.

anonymous 7/12/2013 5:37:45 PM

^way to prove you know absolutely nothing. Bob is one of realist people alive. So does real mean he wasn't getting beat up on a regular basis? I'm not down with your youth jive.

Chi_Stake 7/12/2013 5:48:17 PM

Well it was this or go back to worshipping Meshuggah.

There goes that A Great Artist 10th anniversary tour I just made up.

anonymous 7/13/2013 2:03:12 AM

The REAL tragedy here is there no longer being a vanflip possible. Jebus now has to take them out piecemeal. It's a sad day for music.

anonymous 7/13/2013 2:40:07 AM

"A fck Once Given" haaaahahahaa i'm crying

anonymous 7/13/2013 2:46:32 AM

anonymous 7/13/2013 8:52:32 AM

Great band from back when Philly metal actually had a scene. Influenced more bands than most of these kids on lambgoat can even imagine. Will be missed, and will be rocking the ALOL discography today.

I am glad to coincidentally been there for 3 of Bobs birthday shows (even if it was a lie for a free whisky). They were always honest and really nice dudes sad to see them go each album was a treat.
