Originally named Breach, the Kansas City band that would be Coalesce truly came to fruition in mid-1994 when vocalist Sean Ingram joined the existing line-up of Jes Steineger (guitar), Stacey Hilt (bass), and James Redd (drums). With a hardcore foundation, the band began branch out and experiment to develop a unique sound consisting of discordant guitar riffs, grooves, off-time beats and tempo changes. Their first release would be a 2-song 7" simply entitled '001' on Chapter Records. Growing popularity and constant touring resulted in numerous compilations, cover songs, seven-inches, CDEPs, and full-lengths with the likes of Earache Records, Second Nature Recordings, Hydrahead Records, and Relapse Records. The final incarnation of Coalesce, composed of Ingram, Steineger, Nathan Ellis (bass), and James DeWees (drums), pushed the boundaries of hardcore and metal with their gifted musicianship, musical complexity, raw aggression, and intelligent lyrics.
