Harkonen Charge!

Charge!
Our score 5

This four-song release pulls together various components of indie rock, space rock, and even hardcore. None of the songs are even remotely similar, aside from the overall sonic consistency, stemming from the fact that Harkonen isn't what one would call a "precision" band. They aren't sloppy, but the structure of their music doesn't warrant a label like "tight", and the record's production is mediocre at best. The first, and most interesting track, "Dirty your shoes", begins with a thumping groove, periodically punctuated with fuzzy rock riffs and screaming vocals. There's almost a grunge feel to some of their music, which isn't too surprising considering the band calls Washington home. The track "Special Ed salut" seemingly showcases a more aggressive side of Harkonen, with its pounding beats and anguished screams. However, the track quickly slides into a repeating bass and drum groove, and ends shortly thereafter. The record ends with the title track, which marches ahead with moody strains of guitar leads and feedback. Amidst more screams from Harkonen's vocalist, the song features some subtly haunting guitar melodies. Bottom Line: Depending on the listener, this CD could be considered artsy, clever, or boring. A combination of all three is the most likely verdict. At times Harkonen gives the impression that they're half asleep while playing. On the other hand, as a perfect counterpoint, the band can really stir things up in a unique fashion. Who knows... you decide.
