Formed among several friends in 1995, Seattle's Harkonen began as a quintet, and recorded a demo in 1996. Soon after, the band would release its first self-titled seven-inch (recorded in 1997) in 1998, and a split release on Unjust Records/Cycle Records. Harkonen would follow the two records with a tour of the West Coast. The unit would experience several personnel changes before recording their second seven-inch, "Hung To Dry," which would be released in mid-1998 on Excursion Records. Once again, Harkonen would undergo personnel rotations, but would land a deal with Wreck-Age Records. The band would record its debut, self-titled full-length for late-1999. Sometime in 2000, Harkonen would publish its "Charge" CDEP on Portugal-based Ataque Sonoro. Harkonen's latest CDEP/7" on Hydra Head Records, "The Grizz" (2001), features the band's latest line-up as a trio. With a sound that may be comparable to a rocked-out version of Anodyne or Playing Enemy, Harkonen creates a sonic experience with plenty of grooves, noise, and complex arrangements. read less
