If you would have told me five years ago that hardcore was going to become more and more predictable as time went on, I don't think I would have believed it possible. As much as anyone loves hardcore, there have always been and undoubtedly always will be more than a few cliches in its themes, styles and sounds. Before I even put in the new album Friends Family Forever by Death Before Dishonor, I knew almost exactly what it would sound like. Given the combination of the band's name, the packaging and artwork, and the album's lyrics and title, I could just imagine the little sticker in the store that reads: "For Fans of Hatebreed, Madball and Terror!" Well, big surprise! This CD sounds exactly like you would expect. Every song is comprised of the nu-hardcore trifecta: a handful of breakdowns, singalong parts and those pseudo-metal riffs that have been Hatebreed's signature for the last decade or so. Throw in a guest appearance from Death Threat's Aaron Knuckles and you've got the makings of an instant hit. Don't think for a second that I'm saying this disc doesn't work though. There's enough two-step, pacing back and forth and spin-kick parts to make every kid there for another similar hardcore band buy the disc AND the t-shirt. There's just not a whole lot else. I will give them one brief nod for the clever use of punk/Oi backup vocals on the disc's final track. Bottom Line: It's inevitable that any artform or style will eventually be reduced to a caricature of itself. It's just amusing to see a band so caught up in their supposed sincerity that the irony of what they're doing seems to escape them. Death Before Dishonor are a competently produced band who have made a listenable cookie-cutter hardcore record with metal riffs. If this sounds like what you listen to, you'll probably love it. If not, don't bother.

an accurate review; I've got no problem with this band, but they've never struck me as that interesting. Good hardcore, but nothing exceptional.

Cory finally wrote a review that is not a total piece of shit.

"It's inevitable that any artform or style will eventually be reduced to a caricature of itself. It's just amusing to see a band so caught up in their supposed sincerity that the irony of what they're doing seems to escape them." - exactly.

jesus christ! does anyone else do reviews on here anymore besides cory?

anonymous 7/27/2005 2:23:39 PM

ill give them more than a 5 for the fact that theyve carried boston hardcore better and more seriously than any other shitty band in MA. it is formulatic, but it works, and ill take it over tons of metallic hardcore clones any day...these guys really are boston hc.

anonymous 7/27/2005 2:41:37 PM

wolfpack_ 7/27/2005 4:02:12 PM

The fact that most of you gays get picked on at shows like this should'nt affect the review.quality album. oh and best bands in Boston are cut the shit and out cold and of course slapshot

thegoddamnawesome_ 7/27/2005 4:07:47 PM

poop band, poop label.

cory sux_ 7/27/2005 4:08:19 PM

my friend loves this band. i have no idea why.

Josh_ 7/27/2005 4:29:39 PM

I do not enjoy this band much but what caught my attention was this "nu-hardcore". Are you serious, my buddies and I used to joke about what people would start labeling hardcore of a more modern approach. We had quite a laugh. I never expected some gay to actually refer to it in a serious manner. What a tool.

anonymous 7/27/2005 5:17:54 PM

The whole NU-hardcore fits though. A boring carbon copy of a million other lame attempts at music just like a metal-core band. we need more deadguy.

tonyscumbagfn_ 7/27/2005 6:52:05 PM

cory your a gay, go listen to rush and play chess. there not trying to change the world there just doin what they live for. there absolutly not doing it for you or any of these other college geeks. i bet your the kind of guy who rents a rambo movie and complains about the plot. i know you like to eat mushrooms and listne to the beatles, and thats cool for you. buit honestly if you dont like the music do you ever wonder why you do it. send me all the hardcore cds i review them.

tonyscumbagfn_ 7/27/2005 6:53:40 PM

oh yeah get aids and die.

har_har_ 7/27/2005 6:56:14 PM

this review is f*cking dead on, this band is boring unoriginal garbage, they're lucky they got a 5

xtroyx_ 7/27/2005 7:09:14 PM

wow. the hardcore community is filled with a bunch of immature self-centered f*cks. i really liked this review. it explained the band from his perspective,. it's pretty dead on, but that doesn't mean i can't like it. i listen to this album every now and then, and enjoy it.

anonymous 7/27/2005 7:23:49 PM

this review is so short and so accurate. you didn't even talk about the music at length, but you seriously don't have to. i know exactly what this band sounds like and i've never even listened to them before. great review.

truthsayer_ 7/27/2005 11:51:48 PM

rudy_ 7/28/2005 1:02:00 AM

poop label? hahah, so funny

PalmerLCC_ 7/28/2005 4:10:08 AM

You know what i f*ckin hate?? That people only say that hardcore regurgitates itself...when thats a crock of shit name the last original death metal band to come out in the last 5 years...or an original punk band....we're gettin somewhere

PalmerLCC_ 7/28/2005 4:10:29 AM

Oh yeah and this shit f*ckin rips that MP3 is awesome.

zach_ 7/28/2005 6:15:07 AM

I agree with Palmer when is the last time these god awful oi/punk bands and death metal bands have done something original it all has sounded the same for years!?? Hardcore just gets the most flak for the dumbest reasons. Hell I haven't heard anything new or inventive in Hip Hop...you people have no arguement here.

dipswitch_ 7/28/2005 2:53:07 PM

when WASN'T hardcore predictable exactly? The first 2 sentences of the review negate the entire thing.

suck_my_cock_ 7/28/2005 3:56:36 PM

great bands, solid dudes. i wouldn't expect any stellar review from Cory...but then again I wouldn't have expected the comments people make on here to be dumber then the review.

joehardcore_ 7/28/2005 10:08:13 PM

cory dissing dbd's new record doesnt' surprise me. he's not friends with the band so he dont have to kiss their ass. its ashame that out of all the new wave of hardcore bands- dbd has been around for almost 5 years and individually have been in bands for over 10 years. i guess they've been insincere about hardcore for this long.

XdavidX_ 7/29/2005 12:45:53 AM

I agree to an extent, but DBH has been around for a while, before Terror made it big so even though this disc sounds like everyone else now, they've been doing it a bit longer than a lot of the bands out today. I think I'm missing the breakdowns though, there's only one song I know of with a big one in it, the rest is just straight up fast hardcore

anonymous 7/29/2005 12:50:10 PM

the review didnt say anything about the band being insincere...haha you just straight up made that up.....the album def deserved at least an 8...its a GOOD record.

corysucksmyballs_ 7/29/2005 1:14:42 PM

cory sucks, he hates everything, dont quit your dayjob gay

TheWood_ 7/29/2005 1:55:48 PM

"Hell I haven't heard anything new or inventive in Hip Hop." You obviously haven't heard much beyond Sucka Free Sunday's then. But I do agree with what has been said about hardcore catching the most shit. I do like this album. Not because it's reinventing the wheel, but because DBD do what they do well. If you don't like it, you probably didn't like this style of music to begin with...rendering your bitching and moaning quite pointless.

thereapersson_ 7/29/2005 5:32:42 PM

Boring, Tuff-Guy mediocrity. I'm sure all the meatheads will buy into the whole mentality, but it ain't working for me.

xmarifulx_ 7/30/2005 2:39:07 PM

i think at least a 6 or 7 would be fair...but thats just me meh.

Beef_ 8/4/2005 11:54:44 AM

Wow....this is probably the worst review hes ever made.....DBD is a killer band with some nasty breakdowns and merrorible chants. its not only one of the best cds of the year but it is also completley original. Not one other band in the hardcore scene sounds like them! f*ck all you haters who dont know what friends are. Death Metal has always sounded the same anyways so dont bitch.

cry cry cry_ 8/5/2005 4:15:42 AM

this is a solid record, not ground breaking by any means, no need to call the reviewer a gay because he gave it a five, i would have given it at least a 7. this guys are down and have been down. great live band as well. most of you wont go see them because its not some shitty tech metal band, but whatever, its you who is missing out.

PAAF_ 8/6/2005 1:32:28 PM

Just because their image and approach appear ironic to you does not mean they are any less sincere or that what they are doing means any less to them. Do you think they sit there and write riffs they believe WE want to hear? I doubt it. They write what they like, regardless of what the rest of the hardcore universe is writting. Try doing a review based on the music instead of a review that seems to be written by some bitter scene kid who thinks all hardcore should sound like warzone. Not everyth

Chris_ 8/13/2005 4:56:45 PM

God, is this boston beatdown bullshit ever going to end, f*ck this band.
