Slipknot percussionist says moshing has turned into a form of bullying

In a new interview with Music Review, Slipknot percussionist Chris Fehn was asked about crowd interaction and moshing, particularly in light of Randy Blythe's 2012 arrest in the Czech Republic for the death of a concertgoer.
Fehn had this to say:
"I think, especially in America, moshing has turned into a form of bullying. The big guy stands in the middle and just trucks any small kid that comes near him. They don't mosh properly anymore. It sucks because that's not what it's about. Those guys need to be kicked out.
"A proper mosh pit is a great way to be as a group and dance, and just do your thing."
Personally, I wasn't moshing in the 80s, so I'm not sure what that was like. I did my fair share in the 90s though, and there were plenty of "bullies" in the pit then. I'm older than many of you, so I don't know what's hip now. Is it that bad? What exactly takes place in the pit during a The Acacia Strain show?

Post CommentThose types of dudes get ejected very quickly in Poughkeepsie. That being said this dude just sounds like a pssy who wants to push mosh at a pearl jam show.
They're complete jerks. You cant stand at the edge of a mosh put without taking an elbow to the face or stomach. These jerks do it with full intention.
Every pit that I have ever been into there is always a risk of taking a fist or kick to the head or what have you. I'm normally one of the bigger "Bully" guys in the pit as you so nicely put it, and my intention is usually not to pick someone out and kill them. But you know if you get within a certain distance of me, there is that chance. If you don't like it, don't go in. End of story. Don't ruin it for the people who are there to get some demons out.
The only purpose that pitting serves is to hit people. Crowd killing is cool though.
Most mosh pits know are just c*nts trying to get in a street fight and practicing karate.
I heard that Vincent sends out his own goons during their sets to make the pit unbearable. i went in a TAS a pit this past month. It was the most fun I've had at a show in a long time. I had tons of bruises to show for being in their pit. But no bullies. I got kicked so hard that i flipped on my stomach and four arms grab me from behind and pull me back up. I asked Vincent if he ever sends a goon squad into the pits and he stated that his friends were too old.
Hardcore is all about smashing people then getting mad when someone else does the same thing. Duh.
I can't stand modern day pits It has actually changed drastically just in 10 years All these little gays who are doing fcking Hammer Time rather than just partying it up Sadly Flogging Molly has always brought a more fun pit than say As I Lay Dying for me, most metal pits now, are just dick measuring contests
The most fun I've ever had was in an Anthrax circle pit. Everyone was there to have fun. It was like a big, fat, balding community of friends. On the flip side, I had to wait through Emmure to see another band and everyone tried to Ray Rice each another. Depends on the band and people in the area.
I push mosh hard as fvck at any show i go to. I fvcking represent my city hard as fvck.
Mosh pits are so last year, its all about circle pits and stage dives. - Scott Vogel
I got my ass kicked in August holding it down in Maruta pit. Maybe I was asking for it, idk what else id be doing. I have no clue what acacia strain fans do in mosh pits
I was reading the metal injection thread of this and everyone was pointing fingers at hardcore kids. Both sides are guilty of starting fights in the pit.
it's all about murder pits and balcony dives these days
I've been to plenty of metal concerts and seen the mosh pits and they're just awful. it doesn't look fun at all anymore and lots of fights happen because of it.
I don't care if people are pile-driving each other. Just follow common etiquette of the pit and pick up anyone you see on the ground. Last thing we want is someone being trampled. I encourage moshing (even though I don't do it) it gets the band amped and if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen.
I have been in Slipknots pit, Anthrax pit, White Chapel pit.Chimrpit.Chimra pit. And Hatebreed pit. Every Single time I fell down, everytime some gtabbed me up.i do the same. It's what we do. There was always bullies in there starting shit, and every time security rushed in and did their jobs. Did see one Nazi bitch get his ass beat by the security outside. And it was great
the acacia strain pit = bunch of gaycore clowns playing karate kid.........nothing can beat a CANNIBAL CORPSE moshpit!
I pit often at concerts, and yes there are some who I would say bully. Just cause you throw fists doesn't make you a bully. Now when you find the jerk throwing people to the ground or kicking ya when you fall instead of helping you up, that is bullying. It isn't universal.
The best pit is a Dying Fetus pit. Saw a dude on crutches going ape in there once. It was nuts. Dude was having a ball.
slipknot fans (maggots) are the same as juggalos, so its no wonder people at slipknot shows are jerkoffs
People who listen to aggressive music are shocked when people do aggressive things. Shocking.
every TAS show i've been to is fun as fck if you don't like hardcore dancing or getting hit in the face, just don't go to shows (especially bands with hardcore influences) you pussies if you seriously can't take a hit to the face then you are soft af
I am an jerk. I like to mosh. Every mosh pit has an jerk. Every mosh bit has a bigger jerk than you are. Said mosh pit also has a bigger jerk than that jerk who is a bigger jerk than you. Furthermore, mosh pits are full of jerks who do not give a fck about rules and are there to fck shit up. I miss Pantera.
People who listen to aggressive music are shocked when people do aggressive things. Shocking. (GOLDEN)
Almost everyone who listens to anything deemed "cool" nowadays, listened to Slipknot first.
honestly don't go in the pit if you don't wanna get fcking hit, this music is form a of release for a lot of people. ALso if your from western mass and go to an acacia strain at the waterfront or palladium show be prepared for violence or be prepared to bleed, or stay the fck home. Im a little dude too not some big tough guy but i know the risks and have fun still!
The pit at an Acacia Strain show is in fact one big pissing contest. It's not so bad in hardcore, but in a lot of metal, especially tough guy metal like TAS, it really is a bunch of tough guy douchebags targeting anyone smaller than them.
