Dennis Thompson, the drummer of classic Detroit proto-punk/garage rock band MC5, has sadly passed away at the age of 75.
Thompson was the last surviving member of MC5 and was in the midst of rehabilitation at MediLodge of Taylor following a heart attack he endured in April. After the heart attack, he was recovering at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, where on April 21st he learned that MC5 had been selected for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the musical excellence category.
Tragically, MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, also 75 years old, had passed away in early February.
Throughout the late '60s and early '70s, Thompson contributed to the band's legendary live performances, including a tumultuous performance at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, plus their iconic debut album Kick Out the Jams.
Thompson's agressive drumming style was born out of necessity as he had to break through the overwhelming sound of the band's amplifiers during performances.
