Unsane call it quits

After nearly three decades of existence, influential NYC noise rock outfit Unsane have seemingly disbanded. In a recent interview with Equilibrio Precario regarding his new band Human Impact, Unsane co-founder and frontman Chris Spencer was asked about the status of the band, to which Spencer replied, "I won't be playing in Unsane anymore. Human Impact will be the only band I see myself playing in for a while." Spencer subsequently provided the following clarification to Equilibrio Precario:
"Just to clarify, I will not be playing in Unsane anymore. I'm super proud of what we accomplished, but I need to move on. I'd rather end it on a good note than be a slave to something that I've always loved."

anonymous 8/29/2019 10:37:05 AM

FU.CK. Never got to see them. Best message btw, all these other dipshit bands out there should take note.

anonymous 8/29/2019 10:42:34 AM

I'd rather end it on a good note Yeah, playing to 30 people a night is definitely a good note.

RE: I'd rather end it on a good note Yeah, playing to 30 people a night is definitely a good note. Wrong. Saw them last year in a small market and there were close to 150-200 at the gig. I would agree that they are going out on top.

anonymous 8/29/2019 2:37:14 PM

Unsane call it quits.......... but hoping to cash in on a Riot Fest reunion in 5 years.

anonymous 8/29/2019 2:37:56 PM

UnBANE

anonymous 8/29/2019 2:40:17 PM

Lol to the idiot who thinks playing 150 cap venues is going out "on top"

anonymous 8/29/2019 5:26:11 PM

Every band ever has played to a shitty crowd. Every band draws like garbage on Tuesday nights in South Dakota. Just because you saw a band play to an empty house means nothing.

Analcest 8/29/2019 8:44:14 PM

UnDOUG

Lol to the idiot who thinks playing 150 cap venues is going out "on top" >> Drawing 150 paid people @ $20 every night when you're a trio is actually decent money. 3K gross so figure 2G to the band after the club's cut. 2G - say 500 expenses a day = 1.5K by three band members = 500 per band member plus merchandise sales so figure 600 per band member per show. If your rent is 1000 a month you pay a year of rent with only 20 shows like this.

anonymous 8/30/2019 9:19:17 AM

Now say you drew double that (300 paid) a night @ $20. That's 6G - figure 2G to the venue = 4G to the band - 1G expenses = 3G per member by 3 members = a grand a member + another 200 from merch sales = 1.2K per band member. That's a month of rent a show. So you don't have to draw a ton to pay the rent (or mortgage.) A dozen shows could be played during your vacation.

'Never got the fascination with this band. Life Of Agony, Helmet, Living Colour & Prong i.e. the other non-hardcore '80s bands should follow suit. All shadows of their 1987-94 greatness. Did Anthrax & Biohazard break up? They should, too. All six of 'em are washed up.

anonymous 8/30/2019 9:24:14 AM

* the other non-hardcore '80s bands from NYC.

anonymous 8/30/2019 1:20:49 PM

great news. band has always been unlistenable.

anonymous 8/30/2019 5:07:27 PM

Comments are hilariously naive and childish. What... ya'll are 14? This band scraped the roof off every night they played for almost 30yrs, basically layed the foundation for noisecore and are very respected by bands you probably slob all over. Let's see the headcounts for imitators like Whores in 30yrs.

anonymous 8/31/2019 7:40:59 PM

Obviously dude doing the math in here has never booked a gig before. Advertising costs, opening bands pay, catering, ticket printing, and promoter profit are all factors too. If you draw 3k dollars total, you will be lucky to make 1250-1500 plus merch. Bands also have to pay booking agents and sometimes management even. Unsane sucks anyway.

anonymous 9/1/2019 12:36:03 AM

Band gets 2-5k a show depending on the market/night of the week (booked them multiple times over the past couple of years and they play 250-500 cap rooms) Leafy green (agency) gets 10%. Pretty sure they manage themselves. TM also does merch. So do the math

Thanks for proving my point Dumbo.

Pretty sure they manage themselves. << Proof you can make a nice living playing small/er rooms. 200 paid x $20 = 4K, figure 60% of that to Unsane for 2.4K - 240 Leafy Green's 10% = 2.16K - 500 costs = 1616 net to Unsane so 539 plus merch sales per member so figure 800 total or so per member.

anonymous 9/1/2019 10:29:09 AM

The key to a band making a nice living off touring is living in an inexpensive city say Cleveland, OH. You can get a decent studio/1BR there for 600/mo. Since your rent is 7.2K a year you could pay it by making just 240 a show for 30 shows (a month's worth of shows) but really less than 30 shows when you factor in merch, vinyl & download sales.

anonymous 9/1/2019 10:30:50 AM

^ I'm talking one band member here. If your band ranges from 18 to 25 years old you should be either living with your parents or sharing a place in an inexpensive city like Cleveland or Buffalo.

anonymous 9/1/2019 11:14:16 AM

You idiots have no idea what you're talking about

willy_wanker 9/1/2019 1:48:05 PM

shitty news, but they should at least play a couple nyc farewell shows

anonymous 2/21/2023 7:37:28 PM

That's why they are touring in 2023?
