Ne Obliviscaris look to fund band via crowdfunding campaign

Melbourne, Australia progressive death metal band Ne Obliviscaris has launched a recurring basis crowdfunding campaign via Patreon. The sextet is hoping to raise around $12,000 per month, enough for each of them to earn what they say is minimum wage in Australia. Naturally, a handful of rewards and perks are available based upon contribution levels. A portion of their explanation is as follows:
"A band like us owes much of our popularity to the Internet, and the way the industry works in 2016, the industry no longer supports bands financially in the way it used to. The harsh reality is that you now have bands that have tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of fans all around the world, and yet still make less than minimum wage. We'll level with you...here in NeO we don't even make that. In fact we have never been paid anything for playing in this band, as the little money we do make gets continually re-invested to finance all our tours rather than paid out to members."

"We have inherited a broken system..." You claim it's broken but you're not looking for a permanent solution, you're just begging for money. If you can't afford to do it, you probably shouldn't and if you're not making enough money with your current career it's time to look for a new line of work.

Do you really need 15 fcking people in the band to make that sort of average music? Lose a few members, more money for the rest of the group. Greed-core

I love this band. I hope they can keep touring and making albums. I'm also happy that this band has been getting more news coverage.

i knew the day was coming when the internet panhandling shifted from just funding a record recording/release cycle to actually just funding these bums' entire life of just sitting around jammin' THE BUMS WILL ALWAYS LOSE LEBOWSKI!

anonymous 3/4/2016 6:59:02 AM

no, shitheads that's not how this works. you PRODUCE something, then people decide if its good enough to spend their money on. If it is, you reap the benefits. You don't get to choose a high risk/low reward career path and expect people to subsidize you. This is just the WORST.

these guys are pretty good

anonymous 3/4/2016 11:34:41 AM

This is beyond fcking pathetic.

Their drummer quit his $150,000 a year job driving trains to do the band full time. Now, he's asking for Patreon money.

anonymous 3/4/2016 8:23:28 PM

this gives crowd funding a bad name. where do we draw the line with this fckery? use it to fund a project sure, but to pay your bills? nah, use the money from the sale of the project to pay your bills. if its not enough, tough lyfe!

I bet the fruit cakes who have pledged don't know it's ongoing, because they are like child

anonymous 3/5/2016 6:24:16 PM

you dont see parkway drive doing this, maybe learn to play your instruments better! lmao

anonymous 3/6/2016 4:46:57 AM

Would they like someone to wipe their asses too? Acting like spoilt brats. They should change the name of the band to Useless F@ggots

anonymous 3/6/2016 11:55:33 PM

I don't see your problem here... the music they are making is complicated, takes lots of time to get it right, and they actually play it absolutely well. Every youtube video takes time, practice, equipment and lots of sacrifices, but people use adblockers even there. If you buy their albums, they get a very small amount of the money. I just wish they'd thought of it sooner. (the same goes for all other bands as well! Heck, i'd be painting a lot more if people would actually pay for my pieces)

You naysayers don't know what you're talking about. The Patreon model has been supplying income for many, many musicians, and even YouTube creators like Smoove McGroove and GradeAunderA. The loyal fans contribute in order to help the creators make more content they like on a regular basis. This type of model goes back even to the Medici family's work in the 1400s. Do some research, see who has been using this model to their benefit, and stop criticizing things without facts.
