Varg Vikernes arrested for planning a "massacre"

Infamous black metal musician Kristian "Varg" Vikernes was apparently arrested in southern France on Tuesday after authorities became concerned that the Norwegian national was planning a "massacre." According to Euronews, the arrest took place after Vikernes's wife, a French national, legally purchased four rifles. In a statement released by the French Ministry of the Interior, Vikernes was deemed "likely to prepare a large-scale act of terrorism." Police subsequently searched his home for weapons and explosives. According to the report, Vikernes supposedly received the manifesto of Anders Behring Breivik, the extremist responsible for a July 2011 bombing in central Oslo and a shooting spree on a nearby island which left 77 dead. Since Vikernes apparently received a copy of the manifesto directly from Breivik, authorities weren't taking any chances. "That was at the origin of the investigation … There were several suspicions that made the services fear he could possibly carry out a violent act," said an official at the prosecutor's office. As you may know, Vikernes is the mastermind of black metal band Burzum, and he spent roughly 20 years in prison for the 1993 murder of Euronymous, the guitar player of black metal band Mayhem. After his release in 2009, Vikernes moved to France with his wife and three children. UPDATE: Norwegian laywer John Christian Elden, the man who defended Vikernes when he was tried for murder in 1993, told the AFP that the new charges against Vikernes were "thin." According to this report, Elden had the following to say:
"In Norway it's not enough to simply be preparing a terrorist attack. There must be a specific plan against a specific target. It's also necessary to have a sufficient basis for an indictment before you can arrest anyone. In Norway he would have been summoned to answer questions, but he would not have been arrested... So far it's less than the Norwegian security services have whenever they arrest Islamists and release them shortly afterwards."
Although Vikernes remains in custody, it doesn't appear as if he will be held for much longer.
