Klonns: An Interview with SHV

I first saw KLONNS in 2016. Their sound was mainly hardcore, but very dark with even some goth influence mixed in. I thought it was a really interesting take on modern hardcore and they’ve continued to stand out to me over the years. Since I first saw them, they have been touring and playing live quite frequently as well as releasing multiple EP’s and a split with Japanese power violence band, Soiled Hate. Recently, they released their first LP Heaven on US based Iron Lung Records, and it’s a seriously killer album. The new KLONNS’ sound is a revolutionary revamp of old school hardcore; and they don’t solely function as a hardcore band either. They are also at the epicenter of the Tokyo underground music scene, curating diverse live events and playing with all manners of bands. I had the privilege of speaking with their vocalist SHV recently, discussing the band’s music, happenings, and the Tokyo punk scene as a whole.

Please introduce yourself.

SHV: I’m SHV, singer of KLONNS. I also write lyrics and compose all of our songs. Additionally, I play guitar in a punk band called 珠鬼 TAMAKI and an indie rock band called SOM4LI.

Who are the members of KLONNS? How did you meet? When did you start?

SHV: The members of KLONNS are me, Zie, Shimpei, and AK.okamoto. They are also members of XIAN, TAMAKI, Mortal Incarnation, and Yanushi, among others.

KLONNS was formed around 2016. Initially, I aimed to play dark, slightly horror-tinged post-punk, inspired by The Birthday Party. However, after witnessing Hoax’s Japan tour, I was deeply impacted and decided to change direction. At first, we also incorporated influences from black metal, but as we stripped away unnecessary elements, our sound gradually evolved into pure hardcore punk.

I first met Zie and AK.okamoto over ten years ago at a noise/avant-garde event that was held monthly in Ikebukuro. We remained friends over the years, and when I needed a new bassist and drummer around 2019, I invited them to join this band.

I met Shimpei much more recently, around 2022, when we played a show together with Mortal Incarnation. I remember being struck by the fact that he was wearing a sleeveless Comus (a classic British trad-folk/prog band) shirt. Not long after that, we started looking for a new guitarist, so I reached out to him.

How would you describe KLONNS’ sound? What are the band’s influences?

SHV: Our music is the encounter of 1980s Japanese hardcore and 2010s American and British hardcore punk. We also incorporate influences from the music we’re listening to at the time, as well as other cultural elements.

KLONNS often use the phrase “New Wave of Japanese Hardcore”? What exactly do you mean by it?

SHV: As the name suggests, it represents a style of hardcore punk that had never existed in Japan before. It is also a tribute and homage to the New Wave of British Hardcore.

As a side note, Kriegshog’s LP had the phrase “New Wave of Brutality & Hardcore Massacre,” which also influenced us to some extent.

Of course, this phrase was originally New Wave of British Heavy Metal, haha.

You recently released a new album on Iron Lung Records titled, Heaven. Congratulations! How did that come about? How did you connect with Iron Lung Records?

SHV: Thank you! Our first LP was released as a joint effort between Iron Lung Records and Black Hole, following a suggestion from Black Hole, which handles our Japanese releases. This collaboration has continued since our previous release, Crow 7".

Iron Lung (band) has toured Japan twice and has deep connections with Japanese punks who are older than us. I haven’t had the chance to meet them yet, but I’m really looking forward to finally meeting them this spring.

I’ve been heavily influenced by Iron Lung Records’ releases, so it’s an honor to collaborate with them!

Whom did you record with and where did you record? How did you write the album? There seem to be a lot of guests on it.

SHV: We recorded our first LP at Tsubame Studio in Asakusabashi, Tokyo (which has since relocated) and Studio REIMEI in Nishichofu, Tokyo. Mixing was done at Studio REIMEI, while mastering was handled by Charles Toshio in the Bay Area, USA. The final result exceeded our expectations.

As for the songwriting process, I created demos for all the tracks at home and shared them with my band members. We refined the arrangements through repeated rehearsals in the practice studio.

The intro and outro were composed by my friend, a track maker known as Shine Of Ugly Jewel. He previously organized a party called “Dark Jinja,” which I believe was an epoch-making event in Japan’s underground electronic music scene of the late 2010s. For this project, he composed the tracks with a theme of phonk and dark ambient.

Kim Pueru, the saxophonist on “Replica” is also our friend and the former guitarist of Granule. We wanted to add a sense of tension and nervous energy reminiscent of James Chance & The Contortions, so we had him play the saxophone.

KLONNS and DISCIPLINE PRODUCTION have collaborated a lot in the past. What is your relationship? Do you run DISCIPLINE PRODUCTION? Can you tell us a bit about your relationship and history?

SHV: I run DISCIPLINE PRODUCTION, though unfortunately, it’s not very active at the moment.

Discipline originally started as an event that I co-organized with the band Granule, and later it evolved into a label as well. The concept behind Discipline was to bring together various underground scenes from Tokyo and across Japan—not just hardcore, but also dance music, electronic music, and noise—all within a single night.

By the way, the name “Discipline” comes from a Throbbing Gristle track.

Japanese music has a strong image in the American scene of being very active and generally thriving. Do you think the Tokyo underground scene is particularly interesting or active right now? How would you describe the contemporary Japanese scene?

SHV: I’ve never been to the U.S., so my perspective is based only on what I’ve seen online, but it seems like many rappers create music videos sampling Japanese anime, and there are plenty of bands inspired by old Japanese hardcore punk.

As for the Japanese punk scene, unfortunately, both the bands and the audience are aging, and we don’t see many new generations of bands emerging. However, in the hardcore scene, especially in new school and beatdown hardcore, there are plenty of young and incredible bands.

What other Japanese underground bands would you recommend to Americans?

SHV: I think TIVE, NEGATIVE SUN, THE SPIT, and 童子 (Dohji) stand out as some of the most exceptional bands in the new generation of the punk/hardcore scene in Japan.

What's next? What are you planning to do with KLONNS in 2025?

SHV: This year, we plan to release a split with KAGMI. We are also set to tour the West Coast of the U.S. with Gag in April. Additionally, we will begin working on our second LP.

2016年にKLONNSを初めて観た。音は主にハードコアだけど、とても暗くて少しゴシックがミックスされていた。モダンハードコアの中で本当に面白くて素晴らしいと思った。それからKLONNSがEPやSoiled Hateとスプリトを出してよくライブをした。最近Iron Lung Recordsから「Heaven」という最初のLPも出した。その新しいKLONNSの音は事件的なオールドスクールハードコアの刷新である。それもKLONNSはハードコアバンドだけでなく、東京のアンダーグランドシーンの中心であって色々なライブイベントを作ってあらゆる種類のバンドとプレイする。私はKLONSSと音楽やイベントやバンドの話をした。

自己紹介をお願いします。

SHV: ボーカルのSHVです。すべての楽曲の作詞と作曲も手掛けています。他に珠鬼 TAMAKIというパンクバンド、SOM4LIというインディーロックバンドでギターを弾いています。

Klonnsのメンバーは誰ですか？どうやって知り合いましたか？いつ始めましたか？

SHV: 自分とZie、Shimpei、AK.okamotoの4人です。彼らはそれぞれ、XIAN, TAMAKI, Mortal Incarnation, 家主などのメンバーでもあります。

まず、KLONNSを結成したのは2016年ごろ。当初はThe Birthday Partyのような、ダークで少しホラーテイストなポストパンクをやろうと思っていたのですが、Hoaxの来日公演を観て衝撃を受けて、方向性を変えました。最初はBlack Metalからの影響もあったのですが、無駄を削ぎ落としていくうちに、徐々に純粋なハードコアパンクへと変化していきました。

メンバーについて。私がZieとAK.okamotoと出会ったのは、かれこれ10年以上前、池袋で月に一度開催されていたノイズ/アヴァンギャルドなイベントだったと思います。その後は友人として付き合ってきたのですが、2018〜2019年ごろにメンバーチェンジするにあたって、彼らを誘いました。

Shimpeiと出会ったのは結構最近で、2022年くらい。Mortal Incarnationと共演する機会があって、知り合いました。その時、彼はComus（イギリスの古いトラッドフォーク/プログレバンド）のシャツを、袖を切って着ていて印象的でした。そのすぐ後に、新しいギタリストを探すことになり、彼に声をかけました。

KLONNSの音をどう表現しますか？どんな影響がありますか？

SHV: 私たちの音楽は1980s Japanese Hardcoreと、2010年代のアメリカやイギリスのハードコアパンクをミックスさせています。あとはその時々で聴いている音楽や他のカルチャーからの影響も反映されているかもしれません。

KLONNSはよく「New Wave of Japanese Hardcore」を使います。どんな意味ですか？

SHV:  その名の通り、日本にこれまでなかったスタイルのハードコアパンク、という意味です。また、New Wave Of British Hardcoreへの敬意とオマージュでもあります。余談ですが、KriegshogのLPのインサートに“New Wave Of Brutality &  Hardcore Massacre”という文言が書いてあって、それも少し意識しました。

もちろん、元を正せばNew Wave Of British Heavy Metalですけどね（笑）。

最近Iron Lung Recordsから新しいアルバムを出しました。おめでとうございます。それはどうしてですか？Iron Lung Recordsとはどう出会いましたか？

SHV:  ありがとうございます！私たちの1st LPは私たちの日本盤をリリースしているBlack Holeの提案で、Iron Lung RecordsとBlack Holeのダブルネームのリリースになりました。このコラボレーションは前作「Crow」から続いています。Iron Lungはこれまでに2回日本ツアーをしていて、自分より上の世代のパンクスたちと深い繋がりがあるのです。私自身はまだ彼らと会えていないのですが、この春に会えるのをとても楽しみにしています。

私はIron Lung Recordsの作品に強く影響を受けたので、彼らとコラボすることが出来て光栄です！

だれとどこでレコーディングをしましたか？アルバムはどう作曲しましたか？アルバムのゲストが多そうです。

SHV:  レコーディングは東京・浅草橋にあるツバメスタジオ（現在は移転）と東京・西調布のStudio REIMEI、ミックスはStudio REIMEIで行いました。マスタリングはアメリカ・ベイエリアのCharles Toshio氏に手掛けてもらい、期待以上の出来栄えになったと思います。

作曲に関しては、全曲私が自宅でデモを作り、メンバーに共有しています。練習スタジオで何度も演奏し、細かいアレンジを仕上げています。

イントロとアウトロはShine Of Ugly Jewelという友達のトラックメイカーに作ってもらいました。彼は以前、「Dark Jinja」というパーティーをオーガナイズしていて、それは2010年代後半の日本のアンダーグラウンドな電子音楽シーンにおいてエポックメイキングなパーティーだったと思います。今回はphonk × dark ambientをテーマに作曲してもらいました。

「Replica」のサックスを吹いている金富烈も私たちの友人で、Granuleの元ギタリストです。James Chance & The Contortionsのような緊張感と神経質さを加えたくて、彼にサックスを吹いてもらいました。

ゲストボーカルとコーラスには身近なバンドのメンバーやDJに参加してもらっています。参加してくれた方の関連バンド/ユニット/djを下記の通りです。

過去にKLONNSとDISCIPLINE PRODUCTIONはよくコラボをしました。どんな関係ですか？DISCIPLINE PRODUCTIONを経営していますか？その関係と歴史を少し教えませんか？

SHV:  私がDISCIPLINE PRODUCTIONを運営しています。残念ながら、今はあまりアクティブではありません。

Disciplineは元々、Granuleというバンドとの共同主催していたイベントで、そこから発展してレーベルとしても活動しました。Disciplineはハードコアだけでなく、ダンスミュージック、電子音楽、ノイズなど、あらゆる東京もしくは日本全域のアンダーグラウンドシーンを一夜の中でパッケージする、というテーマで開催していました。ちなみに名前の由来はThrobbing Gristleの曲目からです。

アメリカのシーンの中には日本の音楽がよくアクティブで盛んなイメージがあります。今東京のアンダーグラウンドシーンは特に面白くてアクティブだと思いますか？日本のモダンシーンをどう説明しますか？

SHV:  アメリカにはまだ行ったことがないので、インターネット等の情報をもとにした意見にすぎませんが、ラッパーが日本のアニメをサンプリングしたMVを作っていたり、古い日本のパンクをモチーフにしたバンドがたくさんいるように見えますね。

日本のパンクシーンについて言えば、残念ながらバンドも客も高齢化しています。新しい世代のバンドはなかなか現れませんね。ただ、ニュースクールやビートダウンといったハードコアシーンにおいては、若くて素晴らしいバンドはたくさんいますよ。

アメリカ人にどの他の日本のアンダーグラウンドバンドを勧めますか？

TIVE、NEGATIVE SUN、THE SPIT、童子（Dohji）は新世代のパンク/ハードコアシーンの中でも抜きん出て素晴らしいと思います。

最近KLONNSのメンバーはどんなバンドやアーティストを聞いていますか？日々の生活でどんな音楽を聞くのが好きですか？
