Born of Osiris' third album is their first without departed guitarist Jason Richardson, who split and went on a scorched-earth campaign against his former bandmates, basically calling them a bunch of junkies. Whatever happened, it didn't slow things down for the Chicago band. Despite shedding a shredder, Tomorrow We Die Alive picks right up where The Discovery left off, and ratchets up the creativity, the tech-prog brutality and sees the band boldly embracing its style with no boundaries. Eerie, spacey synths, gargantuan power chords, thrashy riffs and blast beats abound, as they brazenly mix deathcore, industrial and modern electronic music. What works best is when they break a song down completely with chugging riffs and squealing guitar accents and then return to a main guitar line and huge, keyboard-driven crescendo, as they do on "Divergency" and "Mindful." The result is deathcore that sticks in your head. Even if you hate keyboards in metal, you remember them. Like Dimmu Borgir and Fear Factory, BOO use synths to create layers and atmospheric elements, but they also take it a step further like Asking Alexandria, adding ultra-modern techno and electro elements. The synths and electronics also add a complex, modern edge that keeps you guessing. Just when you think you know where things are going, they take an unexpected turn into Rush-meets-Dying Fetus digi-core, as occurs on mind-scramblers like "Aeon III" and "Imaginary Condition." And "Illusionist" just takes the laptop-driven insanity and thrashy industrialism to gloriously extreme levels. Bottom Line: If you hate electronic music, you'll most likely hate this. But if you don't mind a little digital melody, symphonic stabs or pulsing synths mixed with your metal, Born of Osiris uses the technology to expand its sound and take it to dark, mysterious and chaotic places where a traditional guitar, bass and drum setup can't go.

this is a terrible album. using synths to hide the fact they have 0 originality anymore.,

First. Did Lambgoat actually just reference Asking Alexandria without insulting them. Da fuq?

jason was ONLY on the discovery and this is their fourth record ... they have: 1. The New Reign 2. A Higher Place 3. The Discovery 4. Tomorrow We Die Alive and out of all of them Jason was only on one. so this is not their first CD without Jason.

this is a terrible review.

anonymous 9/16/2013 10:33:00 AM

album's not bad. i think dropping to one guitarist is a bad move though.

anonymous 9/16/2013 10:38:40 AM

the reviews on this site have gone to dogshit.

anonymous 9/16/2013 11:05:33 AM

Take THAT, internet

anonymous 9/16/2013 11:19:08 AM

dropping to one guitarist makes no difference because they back track everything anyways live so they could drop to no guitarist and it wouldn't even matter.

whole albums sick

^^ This man speaks the truth!

anonymous 9/16/2013 5:42:46 PM

Jason was so good they can't even pull off his shit live properly. Why he went on to join a f*ckin shitty, worthless breakdown band like Chelsea Grin is beyond me.

im sorry, this review was all too brief and did not at all delve into ANY of the negative aspects of this album as well. I am actually a fan of this band as well as a fan of this album but i too have qualms with this record. come to think of it, most people i talk to like the record but find its lacking. I call for a redo on this albums review. This one was all too brief with no body or brain. dont feel like registering. anonymity is for pussies. -Grindcorey

What the f*ck happened to this place?

anonymous 9/16/2013 9:35:59 PM

Why even bother having reviews on this site anymore if they're 1) a month late and 2) half-ass'd. I'd be surprised if it even took an hour to squeeze this ropey dump of a review out. Nothing about the negatives. Just a bunch of buzz-words and vague descriptions. And yeah, this is their 3rd album without Jason.

Who decided that this clusterf*ck of words was worthy of putting up as a review? This sucks BOO's dck the entire way through and even compares them to Dying f*cking Fetus?

anonymous 9/17/2013 3:02:01 PM

Deathcore f*cking sucks, adding a bunch of synth nonsense to it doesn't make it any better.

bellini 9/17/2013 5:52:53 PM

Who actually listens to this? People in Tapout shirts I assume.

anonymous 9/18/2013 5:58:00 PM

Rush? Dying f*cking Fetus? Are you out of your mind?! I don't know half of the shitty bands being discussed by kids these days, but a quick google proves this band has nothing to do with Rush or Dying Fetus. A quick read I this review proves you're full of shit and have no idea what the f*ck you are talking about. Stop tying to be intellectual by comparing two antithetical bands, it sounds too forced. Just f*cking write the review- its not a thesis.

anonymous 9/19/2013 3:11:02 PM

This band was never, and never will be good. Save your money and buy a fleshlight or something, you recluse LG gays

anonymous 9/21/2013 7:33:34 AM

This ^ there's nothing but a bunch a elitist scumbags in the comments. if you don't like the band go back to listening to your sp00000ky blak mtl.

anonymous 9/22/2013 6:50:17 PM

You are all nothing but a bunch of critical f*cks. Self righteous scum bags.

anonymous 9/22/2013 6:53:17 PM

Must be cool to hate on everything anymore. Id like to see what these dudes consider good music.... Lol

anonymous 9/23/2013 6:57:15 PM

who wrote this interview? just the first line made me cringe.. this is their 4th album.. and the last one, the discovery, is the ONLY one richardson had any part in

anonymous 9/23/2013 6:58:45 PM

wrote this review* goddamit

anonymous 10/12/2013 1:10:53 PM

new album is a step up from when they used to be Bored of Osiris

anonymous 11/15/2013 6:33:45 AM

Cameron writes the drums, bass, and guitar so it doesn't matter what members are in the band.

anonymous 3/5/2014 8:05:00 AM

This album is a step down from The Discovery. This album they're more straight forward to meet more people's tastes, which I think comes out as stale and generic. It's good, but its not good for them from what they have already created. I think The New Reign and The discovery are much better.

anonymous 3/29/2014 7:54:54 PM

This album is a 6/10, at best. They peaked with The Discovery and now we can all enjoy the ride downhill.

anonymous 6/14/2014 6:38:07 AM

Actually, they're not going downhill, they're going back up! I have heard a ton of their new song progresses and they are faaaarrrr from TWDA. They're quite amazing. TWDA is definitely not their best, but it still has its very enjoyable moments
