Self Defense Family is streaming a new song titled "Brittany Murphy in 8 Mile."

Official press release: Self Defense Family's new MLP, Colicky, will be released September 9th, 2016 on Brooklyn label Iron Pier. A dark, roiling post-punk gem written during a time of personal turmoil, Colicky is the group's most jagged, unflinching look yet at the disintegration of intimacy and love. The result is a tight and eclectic mini-LP that ranges from cerebrality and coolness to measured chaos. Today, Self Defense Family have premiered the album's first single, "Brittany Murphy in 8 Mile," on BrooklynVegan. Vocalist Patrick Kindlon commented on the song: "I've got a thing for conversations in songs, duets preferred, but failing that, I'll take some fool acting out both parts. And, if the singer can't even manage that, I'll settle for the gist. That's what this one is, a sloppy, one-sided recounting of what is ultimately a composite dialogue. Worse than that, maybe it's simulacra. Maybe this is how I think it should've gone, so I've manufactured that narrative. Songs I sing on are either explicit enough to leave no room for misunderstanding, or abstruse in such a way that it's clearly not for the listener to understand. This one falls into the first camp. It's exactly how it reads. I dated a truly wonderful woman who I just couldn't make sense of. When I asked her for permission to theme an album around her, she only asked I not make myself the victim. So, in the interest of respecting that, I'm going to extra double clarify the intention of this track's lyrics. She's got an issue or two. But I've got genuine personality defects."
