Listen up, I'm about to make a statement: Engineer is arguably the heaviest and most intense band in the current metal and hardcore scene. You'll notice that I went with the "arguably," mainly because dealing with absolutes tends to lead to journalist booby traps, but nevertheless, the statement carries considerable weight. Anyone who has had the pleasure of witnessing a live show, and thus waited the extra few minutes for the band to set up their wall of cabs to reap the benefits of being blasted by unforgiving walls of sound will most likely support me on this one. And with the release of The Dregs, Engineer's second full-length, they show absolutely no signs of relinquishing their perch atop the hardcore and metal world. For those unfamiliar with Engineer's style, the band blends the styles of Coalesce and Botch with a strong hardcore influence. Not quite hardcore, not quite metal, and certainly not metalcore by today's definitions, these guys have perfected the slice of the music scene occupied by like-sounding bands Achilles, Architect, and the Minor Times. Simply put, The Dregs is 10 unrelenting tracks of punishing musical bliss. While last year's Reproach put Engineer on the map after a few early splits and EPs, this will be the album that allows them to carve out a comfortable spot in the extreme music world. And the reason belongs entirely to songwriting. The Dregs showcases a natural songwriting progression for the band, and the disc emits a sense of maturity that they didn't quite have with Reproach's slightly one-dimensional approach. The Dregs certainly still sounds like Engineer, but their ability to inject small, but memorable touches of melody into otherwise hell-bent songs is much more prominent on this album. The ominous closing guitar work of "Greenhorn" and the bass-driven hooks of "First Frost" both provide excellent examples of this newly refined dimension of the band. So in that respect, The Dregs often resembles a faster Neurosis record, or something that isn't that far of a cry from the earlier days of Isis. The tracks are definitely more concise, but the intensity and the crushing heaviness are still there. And everything is wrapped up into a tight, 36 minute package held together by dark atmospherics, a quality that Engineer fans have probably come to expect. Bottom Line: Just like Engineer's 2006 release of Reproach, The Dregs is a record built upon a strong foundation of pure intensity. But The Dregs also represents a mature step forward for the band in songwriting, and their ability to maintain their trademark heaviness while adding melodic subtleties into the mix easily makes this record one of this year's best. I can't imagine a single person who calls themselves a hardcore and metal fan not getting into this record. Support these four dudes from Syracuse because they sure as hell deserve it.

I was just about to say, this review is spot on. Good Review, Better album, GREAT live show.

I had never heard of Engineer, but got to see them with Coliseum. They blew me away. The record does no justice to their live show, but it's still incredibly intense.

anonymous 8/21/2007 10:28:20 PM

Such a killer album, met my expectations. Nice to see a band that showed early promise step up and deliver.

what_is_wrong_with_you_ 8/21/2007 10:33:32 PM

I'll be real happy when this wave of Botch and Coalesce worship is over.

xTomWaitsx_ 8/21/2007 11:04:13 PM

Yeah I saw Engineer with Coliseum and Breather Resist a few years ago and they were off the hook. I definitely agree with this review as far as the praising of the band goes, but I would have to say that Engineer takes cues from a Breather Resist-type sound, cranks the volume up and f*cking flattens you!

alright review. pretty decent record but i still find myself attracted to earlier songs. artwork for the dregs is possibly the worst i've ever seen.

onemeansquid_ 8/22/2007 2:21:35 AM

Don Dondon_ 8/22/2007 2:50:43 AM

f*cking incredible album. Review should probably have been a 9, but that's only a minor quibble. So heavy, dynamic and interesting. Pummelling.

comp_ 8/22/2007 7:20:56 AM

I must agree with every word of xtroyx's comment

A friend of mine booked Engineer once, 20 people came. Dudes sleep on this band but they're awesome. People in CT don't actually like music I swear........

truthsayer_ 8/22/2007 11:31:52 AM

Great review, great band. Love the artwork on this record, too. I'll agree with the people who say this should have probably be a 9/10. Otherwise, this review sums it up perfectly.

johnfuckingdenver_ 8/22/2007 12:36:44 PM

vdburns, i agree. i just moved back to CT after living elsewhere for the better part of 7 years. and i have to say that the CT music scene is one of the worst i've ever seen. the only thing kids around here seem to like are their friends shitty tough guy hardcore bands. f*ck living in ct.

justin bean_ 8/22/2007 12:59:21 PM

you said boobie. when you get back to ann arbor you best be calling me.

Nick_ 8/22/2007 5:14:24 PM

Yes sir. I'll be back in a few days... maybe the 29th or 30th.

monolithic_ 8/22/2007 5:19:02 PM

I love this whole sub-genre of music (Architect, Gaza, The Minor Times, etc).

weird_ 8/22/2007 7:06:35 PM

how come i cannot get into this album...just seems boring to me

morga_ 8/23/2007 1:54:54 AM

You cannot judge this band unless you have seen them live. One of the heaviest live performances I've ever heard, this band is so underrrated in the scene its terrible. Nick is still the best reviewer on this site.

mrpheeny_ 8/23/2007 2:06:28 AM

yeah, it really sucks that any band could ever be influenced by botch or coalesce, it would be way better if people were influenced by sweet bands, anything but botch and coalesce because this wave of botchiness and coalesceity is like being bitten by the love bat, and its driving me maaad! eat the crusted up c-m in my belly button you aids harboring f*ckstick. engineer slay end of story!

mrpheeny_ 8/23/2007 9:51:30 AM

i knew that will ferrell reference would be over some heads.
