Jamey Jasta and company have worked hard to build Hatebreed into the world's most successful hardcore band, and while they're definitely the best there is at what they do, what they do is, to put it bluntly, mindless. Enter Icepick, Jasta's side project that attempts to raise the bar on general style but drops the ball repeatedly with the execution, among other things. Comprised of Jasta, Lord Ezec (aka Danny Diablo) of Skarhead, producer Zeuss and Frank "3Gun" Novinec (Ringworm, Terror, Hatebreed, Integrity), Icepick is a super-group with more legitimate hardcore credibility than certain entire US states. Violent Epiphany is essentially a pretty decent novelty record that could have been more, had certain choices been made differently. My major beef with the Icepick record is that for all the claims of this being a more old school influenced record, most songs end up turning into Hatebreed songs. Most of them start off promising before degenerating into chugging singalongs and breakdowns. Last time I checked, Leeway, the Cro-Mags and Bad Brains didn't sound like Hatebreed. Agnostic Front might NOW, but they didn't used to. Yet these are the bands that Icepick claims to be using as influence on Violent Epiphany. The only real new influence I hear on this record is a little bit of old Biohazard. So two of these guys are in Hatebreed, one of them produces Hatebreed and the other one is skating by on the waning popularity of a mid-90's thug-core band. The question remains, "Why does this exist" Based on what I've heard of the new Hatebreed, they might have been better off had they saved these songs and released them as Hatebreed songs. They're good hardcore songs for the most part and have the same visceral appeal that Hatebreed songs do, but I just can't help but wonder what the point is. Songs like "Creation of Chaos" and "Tomorrow Is Not A Promise" offer glimpses at the sort of older crossover sound that Icepick seems to be going for, but both songs end up sounding like the modern pseudo-crossover revival (AKA putting Slayer riffs in your songs) that Hatebreed has spearheaded. The problem with this record is illustrated perfectly on "With One Ideal," when the first amazing minute of punk-y old school hardcore suddenly gives way to a horribly boring, two minute sequence of Hatebreed-style chugging. It's enough to make one rip their hair out. It's like they're intentionally sabotaging these songs. Also, throughout the record, Ezec and Jasta trade off on vocals and unfortunately for Ezec, Jasta's just a better hardcore vocalist. There are guest appearances by Paul Bearer of Sheer Terror, Al Barr of the Dropkick Murphy's and the Bruisers and Freddy Cricien of Madball that don't do much besides highlight the quality of their respective vocal abilities, and one from Roger Miret that makes Ezec seem great by comparison. "Show of Force" has some nice Strife moments in it and there are other bright spots all throughout the record, but just when you think you've gotten the gist of the record and you're settling into potentially enjoying it, the album's worst moment rears its ugly head. I'm talking, of course, about the song "Real Recognizes Real." The track features rapper and former Body Count vocalist Ice T in his return to singing hardcore badly. Add in the fact that he prefaces it all with "It's going down, faggots!" and I was left just shaking my head. What the fuck is that This is 2006, not 1995. Icepick are not One Life Crew and I'd like to think that the hardcore community isn't comprised of a bunch of ignorant assholes. Perhaps Jasta understands that he has an audience consisting largely of meathead frat guys and high school football players and would rather pander to them than do the reasonable thing and keep this off the record. Who knows. All I know is that as much as I might have enjoyed certain portions of this record, I'm just puzzled and annoyed that it exists. Bottom Line: If you really love Hatebreed, chances are you'll at least enjoy this record. There are moments of every track (approximately the first minute or so) that don't sound like Hatebreed, but for the most part, you should know what you're getting into. It's not that this record is bad per se, it just does extremely little to justify its existence. And the music, despite supposedly being a throwback to old school hardcore, seems less inspired by the last two decades than does the overall absurd mentality of tracks like "Real Recognizes Real." Basically, you've got a record I never need to own, regardless of tracks I might like.

We better not catch you around at any shows, because if my crew sees you, you'll wish you never got out of bed that day. Oh, and to everyone who actually CARES about this record, listen up! panda_ 5/28/2006 5:14:03 PM

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, somebody didn't like my record, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! -Jamey Jasta (if that really was him)

anonymous 5/28/2006 5:33:00 PM

that's obviously not jasta you moron

TheWood_ 5/28/2006 6:21:21 PM

Icepick is ridiculous...and that's why I like them. THE PITBULL!

kyoku_ 5/28/2006 7:20:20 PM

When political correctness surfaces in reviews, all credibility is lost. Who cares if it is 1995 or not. It's not a fugazi record. Button your f*cking cardigan and whine some where else.

anal_ 5/28/2006 7:42:40 PM

I love this record. i dont need to be challenged to enjoy something. i believe the high & mighty critics of lambgoat have actually forgot how to have fun. if this was some sort of obscure band that only has 87 friends on myspace (but wrote the same music) the rating would be a 7/10. btw the Ice T song is f*cking classic. And although I like them, remember you gays gave Crotchduster a 9.

LEX_LUGER_ 5/28/2006 9:58:51 PM

f*ck that. This review deserves a torture rack. 7 or 8/10.

Mr. Cooper_ 5/28/2006 10:55:30 PM

"Agnostic Front might NOW, but they didn't used to." *Never used to. f*cking moron.

Asshole_ 5/28/2006 11:18:27 PM

Great. More macho fist pumping while swilling the beer and flicking the ashes of a joint. Whoopee. I foresee this one being a regular in the budget bin. If used shops will actually pay anything for this sack of ass, that is.

choad_ 5/29/2006 12:15:59 AM

^---haha

TheReapersSon_ 5/29/2006 12:51:01 AM

HAHAHA, I got all you gays confused to whether or not that was Jasta <3. You guys are BREEEEEEEtarded

seanopus_ 5/29/2006 1:48:34 AM

anonymous 5/29/2006 5:45:02 AM

Tim_ 5/29/2006 3:40:20 PM

patbene-tarbaby_ 5/29/2006 7:49:49 PM

This album will add two inches to your biceps.

deez_nutz_ 5/29/2006 10:41:33 PM

hahaha, whoever wrote the jamey and ezec comments deserves a lot of credit, classic lambgoat pwnings! This album is decent, but for the most part Cory is right, it could have been alot better. I'm sure it'll sound better than the new Hatebreed album though. And Cory is now a complete, total f*cking gay.....Its' 2006 Cory, and we still hate gays.

drewxblood_ 5/29/2006 11:01:26 PM

in all fairness to icepick, i don't think i'd have the balls to tell Ice T what he can and can't say haha

TheReapersSon_ 5/30/2006 4:17:48 AM

""hahaha, whoever wrote the jamey and ezec comments deserves a lot of credit, classic lambgoat pwnings! This album is decent, but for the most part Cory is right, it could have been alot better. I'm sure it'll sound better than the new Hatebreed album though. And Cory is now a complete, total f*cking gay.....Its' 2006 Cory, and we still hate gays."" I made the Jasta pwnings, LOL!

Natas 101_ 5/30/2006 11:04:21 AM

You should've dropped a 2 on this bullshit, shit like this makes all hardcore look illegitimate and stupid. "I'd like to think that the hardcore community isn't comprised of a bunch of ignorant jerks." You obviously don't read the Lambgoat borad often enough. "Perhaps Jasta understands that he has an audience consisting largely of meathead frat guys and high school football players", or at least they might as well be. f*ck you idiots that actually like this shit, f*ck Hatebreed, and f*ck Jame

wearyourwounds_ 5/30/2006 12:22:47 PM

meathead hardcore like this ruined punk rock. keep the homophobic jocks out of the scene. joke record joke band.

anonymous 5/30/2006 12:56:32 PM

Ice T is a f*cking idiot. Thugcore sucks. Take your repressed homosexual homophobia over to hip-hop, where it belongs.

Jamey_ 5/30/2006 1:04:35 PM

You f*ckwit! My ONE THUMB has done more for hardcore than your entire life!

Ice T_ 5/30/2006 1:29:15 PM

Now that I'm done playing the pig on Law And Order, it's time all ya'll gays recognize real motherf*ckas. Icepick is one hundred percent the realest mothaf*ckas ya'll ever will meet, and if you got something to say, bring it gays! ICEPICK 06, and keep your eyes open for the new body count jaunt niggas

Seth Putnam_ 5/30/2006 2:33:57 PM

deez_nutz_ 5/31/2006 9:44:00 PM

ok...you should have just let it go, it ran its course, now it's just stupid....homophobia on the other hand, is always funny

wizardsbeard_ 6/1/2006 12:16:22 AM

This shit is stupid, but Law and Order is an excellent show.

Dirty_ 6/1/2006 1:27:32 AM

Shit review. This record is solid. Sure it sounds quite a bit like Hatebreed...because it has the vocalist/frontman from Hatebreed and the guitarist. Originality has become overrated...fun has become underrated.

Dirty_ 6/1/2006 2:49:51 PM

Also underrated: 10 on 1 beatdowns and single-chord hardcore. Crack a beer and stop being gays.

Beetlejuice_ 6/1/2006 4:41:04 PM

The only "Tough Guy" hardcore bands I could ever take seriously were Hatebreed and A Death for Every Sin. Despite the fact that Jamey is their vocalist, if I want to hear tough guy shit in the vain of Hatebreed, I'll just listen to Hatebreed. Besides, what the hell is the poit of being in a side band that sounds just like your primary band??

drewxblood_ 6/1/2006 6:05:54 PM

sweet, glad to see that no one in hardcore DOESN'T take things way too seriously.

Dave2112_ 6/3/2006 3:40:09 PM

Yeah really. Why defend people that could care less who the f*ck you are. All they care about is you buying their records and hyping them up on message boards. Ice T is cool in Law and Order..thats about it.

wizardsbeard_ 6/3/2006 9:15:34 PM

detective dutuolla is it.

anonymous 6/4/2006 11:44:40 PM

Jud Jud is playing as Icepick now? Where does the time go.

EVAN_ 6/9/2006 9:00:42 AM

sheer terror is the hardest ny band ever... icepick is a bad band... one life crew and chubby fresh are LAMMMMMMMMMME

THAT NIGGA _ 6/9/2006 9:03:01 AM

"we will say it right now for the ages. girls do not belong in hardcore. they are nothing but coatracks for the real men who make up the scene. how many fights have started 'cause some hippie broad was doing the "both hands on the backpack emo wiggle" and got busted by some kid busting kung fu. then some huge beef starts 'cause some girl left her spot in the kitchen to come to a hardcore show. those girls should be at home cutting jonathan taylor thomas pictures out of teen beat and listening to

anonymous 6/11/2006 10:52:04 PM

Can we stop this racist "nigga" shit already, and just say "black" instead?

jesse_ 6/12/2006 4:37:22 PM

awesome record. the type of record that shouldn't be reviewed by someone who's gonna take the "music" too seriously. funnest record of the summer. gays.

anonymous 6/16/2006 12:15:03 AM

Funnest, you say?

thegreatsatan_ 7/4/2006 11:45:42 AM

I used to live with you cory! You say gay all the time! gay!

¹³Røb_ 8/29/2007 8:51:50 AM

Complete b*ll shit. How the f*ck is anyone gonna say any kind of lame shit about Hatebreed or Icepick. these two bands, along with Subzero are the most influencial bands I know. They've kept me full of determination for years. DEVOTION MEASURES STRENGTH. That's what's f*cking real. So f*ck you to whoever dis-agrees. 11/10 Bitches.
