I often ask myself why I can appreciate certain bands that competently borrow from their peers and predecessors, yet others simply infuriate me. Above This Fire are a band that combine metalcore and hardcore into a slick, marketable brand of cheese just good enough to keep you from loathing it. The constant harmonized guitars are balanced by the grittiness of the vocals, the predictability of song structure is kept tolerable by the occassional display of creativity behind the drum kit, and so on and so on. For every negative I find about this band and their album In Perspective, I find something else that keeps me from turning the record off. Don't get the wrong idea: This record is incredibly derivative and largely boring. It's just that the band apparently spends enough time actually studying their influences to avoid copying them exactly, a feat most bands of this sort fail to accomplish. Above This Fire are decidedly at their best when their music leans more towards the hardcore side of things. I suppose this is because most hardcore bands are derivative, thus making Above This Fire seem just as competent as most of the competition. When the record falls on its face is when the band pulls out their metal riffs. The instrumental "In Perspective" is two minutes of a repetetive guitar line that the band obviously thought was brilliant enough to deserve its own unadorned track. Quite frankly, the riff barely deserved to be on the record, let alone get its own track. What some bands lack in songwriting talent, they are able to make up in lyrical prowess. Lines like "This requiem is all I have to show that you are in my heart / This requiem is all I have to show that you are still with me" or "I reach out you watch me fall" sung over cliche breakdowns definitely don't help the band's case. Here's another indicator of just how simultaneously genuine and creative this band is: They actually named a track after a Black Dahlia Murder record. Yes, I understand that "What A Horrible Night To Have A Curse" is a Castlevania quote, but let's be honest with ourselves, guys. Bottom Line: How do you reconcile the fact that a band is essentially flaunting their mediocrity in front of you with the innate listenability of the record In my case, it will probably result in getting rid of the disc to keep myself from listening to an album ultimately not worth my time. If you love bands like Comeback Kid, Thrice, Underoath, etc. that bastardize legitimately good styles of music into tolerable fodder for MTV2, Above This Fire will probably appeal to you. It's catchy, it's stupid and if they find the right A&R rep, it could probably sell at least twenty thousand copies.

I dont like this at all, funny I was browsing Life Sentence's bands earlier too.

Did you write this review from the one sheet? Cus that's what it sure looks like.

hahaha, what happened to you jocking the new Underoath, cory?

wtf@omg.noob_ 5/2/2005 12:27:05 AM

garunteed the new Bane will get atleast an 8 or above on here even though Above This Fire is atleast 10x more interesting than they are. Above This Fire sticks to the roots better than most hardcore bands and cross it with metalcore and pull it off better than most. I recommend this cd to anyone who likes Trial, The Hope Conspiracy, Paint The Town Red, and old Caliban. Another shitty lambgoat review.

anonymous 5/2/2005 1:02:15 AM

www.hxcmp3.com/bands/22911 new song!

anonymous 5/2/2005 1:22:26 AM

hah. so this band is more orginal than bane? hah. first off, no one is doing anything orginal, or has been for the last twenty years. with that said, bane is intensely more talented than above this fire. this mp3 at the bottom of the page sounds like something trustill is gonna pick up in about five minutes. think what you will from that statement.

dimmak_ 5/2/2005 1:43:20 AM

yeah... this seems like a pretty crappy and close minded review. the provided song doesn't make me feel sick to my stomach when i think of the possibility of it getting cast into the hot topic genre of bands. music is always a lot more entertaining for me when i don't think of listening to music as being part of a group (then i don't have to be overtly critical and associate bands with people i hate). the end of this album reminds me of old piecemeal stuff. i say just based on the track i am he

skam_ 5/2/2005 2:37:55 AM

read what that dude said above. he didnt say atf was more talented or original. but what he did say was that they were more interesting and i agree. bane f*cking blows and when they get signed to a bigger label and you stop jocking them i'll laugh in your face. and with the way hardcore is moving into the airwaves i hope for your sake trustkill signs them. and yeah cory, i thought you liked underoath? hitthepit.com does better reviews....they actually review the music and not judge the bands bas

It's not a written decree stating that this is how you MUST think. Grow up. One day, you'll look back and cry.

jon_ 5/2/2005 7:34:20 AM

the song " WHAT A Horrible Night To Have A Curse" has nothing to do with the black dahlia murder album you moron....i do there merch..cant read cant right KENT STATE....that says it all...

anonymous 5/2/2005 8:24:08 AM

perhaps you should enroll in a community college somewhere, because it should be "their merch," not "there merch"

edison_ 5/2/2005 9:10:03 AM

this cd is good. it's great actually. listen for yourselves. don't let one person decide for you what you should and shouldn't listen to. he obviously likes or or he wouldn't have written "For every negative I find about this band and their album In Perspective, I find something else that keeps me from turning the record off." BOTTOM LINE: GET THIS CD.

anonymous 5/2/2005 9:13:14 AM

CFS!!!!!

anonymous 5/2/2005 9:42:58 AM

I agree with what he says about the CD being boring caused by very similar song structures in almost every song. The band has talent, but has yet to reach their peak. I think their next release will be the real test of this bands potential. They should try adding some more experimental elements in their music, and possibly some more diverse lyric ideas. Other than that, cool dudes, crazy live show.

anonymous 5/2/2005 10:31:44 AM

cant you just like a cd for what it is? Why does everyone have to have complex song structers and shit? Maybe they dont want to sound like dillenger. Good CD, Shitty Review

yeah_ 5/2/2005 1:33:49 PM

I agree with the guy that was making fun of Jon-the-merch-guy for not being able to "read or right". You should never imply that someone else is uneducated, Jon-the-merch-guy. You sell t-shirts and fail the GED.

sam_ 5/2/2005 1:34:37 PM

im not into this band or style of music really first of all but seriously these reviews are becoming more and more about showing off the reviewers vocabulary and grammar skills. probably trying to put that degree to use i guess. and more and more the lambgoat reviewing gig is a place for bitter old hardcore kids to come and die. this dude and most of them are solid writers for sure but when you say you will get rid of a cd so you wont listen to it cause you know it isnt "worth your time" even th

yousuck_ 5/2/2005 2:04:52 PM

holycitybradley_ 5/2/2005 2:30:00 PM

Cory is probably one of the better reviewers on the site. I listened to this track and there is definately nothing noteworthy about it. They are solid musicians and seeing them live is probably fun. Im sure that everyone standing up for them is probably a "merch guy" or someone from their region. PS - if you haven't noticed, lambgoat is defiantely a bunch of old metalheads rather than hardcore kids.

anonymous 5/2/2005 2:41:04 PM

or ex-alternarocker in the case of Cory.

Cory_ 5/2/2005 2:57:33 PM

I don't get where people get some of these comments from. Honestly. By the way, as much as Castlevania II rules, if you're in a metalcore band and you use the same quote as one of the biggest, most popular bands in the genre, you're either ripping them off or you lack creativity. It's entirely possible that is the case, as Above This Fire definitely lacks creativity.

1234567890_ 5/2/2005 3:58:06 PM

ABOVE THIS FIRE f*ckING SUCKS

Michael_ 5/2/2005 5:00:49 PM

Sounds like someone has a personal vendentta as this isn't the first time you've expressed your hatred for the band. I've know these guys for years and they've been nothing but the nicest of guys. Sure this album isn't 100% original, but these days nothing is. Hell you gave ALOL a high score and all they do is completely rip off Meshuggah. I think the funniest thing is you try to trash the band by comparing them to Thirce and Underoath but you have said on other occasions that you enjoy those b

Cory_ 5/2/2005 5:03:35 PM

I've expressed a distaste for this band once and it was in conjunction with reviewing this album. If I had a vendetta, I wouldn't be giving them the free press.

anonymous 5/2/2005 6:56:29 PM

black dahlia murder isn't metalcore. above this fire are c-cky rockstars. corey sucks, but this review (although blatantly vindictive) is pretty accurate. who knows what bands corey will favor when the next trend comes by and who knows what sound above this fire will have then too.

pie eater_ 5/2/2005 8:17:26 PM

above this fire is a bunch of f*cking gays. dick handling gays

guys c'mon; cory is the all-knower of everything that is good. Especially when it comes to albums like "they're only chasing safety"

xacethekidx_ 5/2/2005 10:24:15 PM

this is a very accurate review. their song writing is comparable to an 8th grader's. it is like they spent no time and effort on this record. they tried to be different than all of the other bands in thier genre, whom which all sound the same, by changing thier vocals and it sounds terrible. they are just another band in the second coming of "new-metal" or metalcore, which ever you prefer, who are happy w/ themselves when they make shitty, predictable, unintellingent music for scenesters and

hahaha_ 5/2/2005 11:38:43 PM

hahahahaha cory gave Zao "parade of chaos" a 9/10. and to the person above, Above this Fire is more of a hardcore band than most in the genre. They arent original, but that doesnt mean its not enjoyable. People really need to start getting over that. If you want truly original music, you're going to have to go back to the 60's because everything nowadays is a clone of a clone, and some happen to do it better han others...Above This Fire is one of those bands that pull it off. 7/10.

MrQuoteOutOfContext_ 5/3/2005 12:43:22 AM

I like one, maybe two songs. Haven't really heard this CD, just their last EP. Never was too into them.

Leighton_ 5/3/2005 1:18:49 AM

shit i hate it when people base a review on the concept that the band is unoriginal. This cd (with the exception of the instrumental) rocks big time. There is hardly anything original that hasn't been thought of before. This band takes the good traits of a style of music that a lot of hardcore/metalcore fans will love - me included. If you want something that is truely original, pretend that you were living in the 80's when hardcore first started and imagine how people would react if this cd was

YurhedaSplode_ 5/3/2005 3:50:32 AM

Looks like that underrage boy Cory porks has finally escaped from his bastufft. So, I guess Cory doesn't have to like this shit anymore to get down his pants. Good show.

ps. YurhedaSplode's comment made no sense.

Mike Jinny_ 5/3/2005 12:04:28 PM

this former rap metal band is aweful. i am sorry. Cleveland was a hardcore empire at one point and its amazing to see the uninspired crap that it shits out now. Then again I could go see grandpa Integrity play another "reunion" show. Strap on your white belt because hardcore is dead.

MrQuoteOutOfContext_ 5/3/2005 1:25:35 PM

Names For Graves and District 5 are good, new Clevo hardcore...

Cory_ 5/3/2005 4:45:42 PM

District 5 is not good. Also, there was already a band called District 5 from Cleveland. They played rapcore. They were kinda good at the time.

hahahhaha_ 5/3/2005 6:12:03 PM

Cory, you still gave Zao "Parade Of Chaos" a 9/10. you lose for eternity.

Cory_ 5/3/2005 6:13:02 PM

Parade of Chaos is still a great record. Maybe an 8 and not a 9, but hindsight is always 20/20 and Above This Fire is still mediocre.

woop_ 5/3/2005 7:08:18 PM

mediocre like your review.

anonymous 5/3/2005 7:18:30 PM

how about we get somebody that isnt a local elitist f*ck to review it?

LifeXinXaXbox_ 5/3/2005 11:31:18 PM

I disagree with this review. I mean, let the author think what he wants - to each his own, I just disagree and think to some extent this article is misleading. This band isn't unoriginal in any way, they don't lack creativity, and song stucture/instrumental talent is something they've really got working for them. I think that everyone should at least give the album a fair listen, notably "miles apart" or "burn the daylights out". It's pretty good stuff. and to whoever said that they are "c-ck

It's about time someone gave Above This Fire the press they deserve. This band and the kids in it are a disgrace to Clevelad hardcore. I wish these ass hats would pack up and move to Orange County or something.

Bottom Line: I think most people will be surprised by the brilliance of this album and the growing popularity to come for Atreyu. As a band that most people thought would never amount to much out of the ordinary, Atreyu has proven themselves time and time again, and has kept winning over more fans with every show they play. I highly recommend that anyone searching for a great new band out of the millions of "new" bands coming out, go out and pick up "Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses

Above This Fire will always have my support. I believe they're one of a kind and really the only band holding the Cleveland scene together right now.
