Refused announce new album, preview first song

Wednesday, July 24, 2019 7:16 AM PT

Swedish punk/post-hardcore outfit Refused have announced plans to release a new album this fall, their first since 2015's Freedom.

The outing is titled War Music and will arrive on October 18 via Spinefarm Records and Search & Destroy. Its first single, "Blood Red," will be issued on August 2. A preview of the new track can be streamed below.

In conjunction with the forthcoming single, Refused offered this:

"In the present moment, we who believe in the equal distribution of wealth in an egalitarian, ecological direct democracy, we who use gender-neutral pronouns and words like solidarity, moral responsibility, intersectionality and class warfare, we who believe in the Marxist dictum, 'from each according to ability, to each according to need' are on our back foot, on our backs, backed up against the wall, surrounded by enemies, our movement curtailed, our rights violated. It's been clear for some time: the sun is setting on our beliefs.

"But we still believe that capitalism is cancer and we still believe it can be cured. We still believe that the patriarchy is cancer and we still believe it too can be cured. We still believe in the power of art to transform and expand the mind. And last but by no means least: We still believe in the total violent obliteration of the one percent. Blood red until we're fucking dead. Let's go."

Obviously they didn't get the memo that Swedish "men" are the laughing stock of the world? Smash the patriarchy, eh, big man?

How the fck are you going to do that when you've allowed the most pro-patriarchal, misogynist and homophobic culture on the planet to abuse and destroy your country and women? Cucks.

Far better & more aggressive than all the derivative/breakdown/ baseball hat-on-sideways bandana tough guy midtempo trash considered to be hardcore these days. Actually has people in the band who can play their instruments too, good shit.

Commie bands are by definition ridiculous. But you must know, as Americans, we live in a casino owned by Hollywood, pharmaceuticals, banks, and the military industrial complex. It used to be only shiftless nothing-to-lose types would come here and gamble. Now our children play amongst the slot machines, and as they get older, they'll work for them.

We take bands with women on tour under the guise of equality, but reality is we try to sleep with whoever we are able to wear down first.

Remember when the singer announced from stage he is gay and everyone should try it? Pretty capitalistic way to rake in those impressionable merch sales.

When they first toured in 2012, T-shirts were $25-$35 and I found it to be surprising. They had vinyl that was $30-$40.

Long-story short, I heard from someone who overheard band members talk how 'americans were fools and materialistic' so they jacked up prices to profit from all the kids who were buying tons of merch assuming this was a one-off.

I can't prove it but I'm not surprised by the possibility of truth. I guess they don't consider their brand of exploitation to be capitalism.

I'll agree $25-$35 for shirts and up-to $40 for vinyl isn't the most outrageous thing for a band from outside the USA.

But Refused's M.O. wasn't being about great profits off the masses.

When your press release is mostly political buzzwords, then who cares? If the people that hate this band are Nazi apologists, then consider me Joseph Goebbels!
