Cop fired for joining Vital Remains on stage during show

Police officer Andrew Ricks on stage with Vital Remains

Several days ago we told you about the uniformed police officer who joined Rhode Island death metal band Vital Remains on stage last Friday in Sanford, Florida to help introduce a song. As originally expressed, I had a feeling this wouldn't end well for the officer, and indeed, it has not.

Today the Orlando Sentinel reports that officer Andrew Ricks has been relieved of duty for the act:

Police officer Andrew Ricks ended his career in Sanford by taking the stage last week and singing "Let the Killing Begin" in full uniform while backed up by Vital Remains, a death metal band.

Ricks already had notified the city of his intention to resign effective Friday, but Police Chief Cecil B. Smith relieved him of his duties Wednesday morning, records show.

"An incident of this nature erodes the thin fibers of trust which already exist between the community and the police and it will not tolerated within the Sanford Police Department," Smith said in a statement released Thursday.

Ricks was on duty when he sang at the West End Trading Co., a venue on the shore of Lake Monroe in Sanford, according to police.

Someone in the audience sent a video of Ricks' performance to the police department late Tuesday.

Ricks has declined comment on the matter thus far, but Vital Remains frontman Brian Werner said, "This is exactly what's wrong with the world today."

eroded trust? i think it bolsters trust

11/19/2015 6:08:00 PM
LOL Lambgoat called it. What a wonderful website

11/19/2015 6:08:16 PM
Unfckingreal man

11/19/2015 6:12:30 PM
Cops kill people nothing happens, cop does vocals for a death metal band, fired.

11/19/2015 6:17:22 PM
the biggest jerk in this entire story is the prick that sent the video to the police department

11/19/2015 6:38:58 PM
No, the biggest prick in this situation is Werner, who asked the cop to come on stage. LOL its Werner's fault he got fired.

11/19/2015 6:40:48 PM
The snitch should get his ass beat at next vital remains show

11/19/2015 6:56:43 PM
Who the hell cars that he got up on stage? If anything this was a good image for the police department

11/19/2015 6:57:07 PM
This is BS

11/19/2015 7:12:45 PM
so gay

11/19/2015 7:32:46 PM
Snitches get stiches, and f*k tha police.

11/19/2015 7:38:51 PM
He should have just shot a black kid.

11/19/2015 7:50:24 PM
Sanford PD = Trayvon Martin

11/19/2015 7:53:12 PM
Dick, who snitched is now known as the party police of death metal

11/19/2015 7:55:39 PM
kill colored people? desk duty

sing a deathmetal song - fired

I see the logic

11/19/2015 8:22:09 PM
But, by all means. Shoot and kill an unarmed perp, take two weeks paid vacation and keep your job. F u c k the police!!!

11/19/2015 8:32:10 PM
All this fck the police is retarded. This guy sounds like a good cop and deserves respect and his job back. Him having a good time with the public sounds like good public relations. fck the snitch that recorded the video and fck the captain with no balls that fired him.

11/19/2015 8:32:27 PM
Sanford PD = Trayvon Martin

11/19/2015 9:31:31 PM
The real question is Why was he at a concert when he could be out shooting blacks?

11/19/2015 9:44:51 PM
This is f**ked. A cop who listens to death metal is wayyyy more trustworthy than the typical "Hurrr durrr, I've taken an oath to protect the community because Jesus" pricks.

11/19/2015 9:57:32 PM
Should have killed an unarmed civilian instead, would have got off with paid leave!

11/19/2015 10:03:09 PM
I wonder if people forgot that it wasn't a police officer that killed Treyvon Martin but some rogue neighborhood watch wanna-be do-gooder. Sanford PD needs to reinstate this officer. He did absolutely nothing wrong here. In fact, he was doing what he was supposed to be doing: becoming an active member in serving the community and being a role model..... I mean, he joined Vital Remains on stage... come on.

11/19/2015 10:13:56 PM
Guy Kozowyk calls bull$hit.

11/19/2015 10:42:17 PM
he got fired for yelling?

11/20/2015 2:04:17 AM
But if you kill an unarmed kid it's k.

11/20/2015 2:25:47 AM

11/20/2015 4:05:46 AM
Always leave it to some pathetic little rat to go pull some shit like this.
You have no life if you felt the need to randomly fck up someone's life like this.

11/20/2015 4:18:00 AM
So you can kill a black girl and get paid vacation, but if you follow your passion and do music while representing the police, you get fired...that song is about standing up to bullshit. fck you Rhode Island

11/20/2015 5:27:47 AM
The cop's mistake was that he didn't beat someone up. Then he would have been looking at a promotion.

11/20/2015 5:31:03 AM
To the idiot who said Fck You Rhode island.. Not that I am from RI, but read the story stupid. The band is from RI, the officer and venue he sang at are in FLA.

But I still agree with most of the sentiment here...this was not right. At worst, maybe a short suspension, but to fire before he could retire to block pension is a dick move. Typical FLA BS.

11/20/2015 6:11:27 AM
So he would have got a promotion if he sang with a Country Band? To the little bitch who sent the video to the Police Department, two of you wouldn't even make one idiot now go lay down next to your bowl sissy.

11/20/2015 6:12:50 AM
It's okay Vital Remain saved a life from another white life that would have been shot down by an inevitable n11gger riot in the upcoming US racial civil war

11/20/2015 6:24:19 AM
maybe he was off-key?

11/20/2015 6:37:54 AM
I dont think it's just because he sang on stage with a death metal band. He sang the song "Let the Killing Begin". Poor choice of song and lyrics to sing when police officers are be accused of killing unarmed people all over the nation.

11/20/2015 7:14:25 AM
Please read ....He had already given his notice to the city effective Fri...he just was relieved of duty on Wed. No person representing the police should be on stage repping "Start the Killin" especially in light of the fragile trust between citizens and the police in Sanford. What you do on your own time is fine....THIS was a supremely stupid move on his part...maybe he wanted to go out that way

11/20/2015 9:26:47 AM
Doubt it was the actual act of getting on stage that got him fired(though why was he there on duty anyways?) but more of the song content that did it. Like if this was a Earth Crisis or cheesy have heart song or something it might not have been a big deal. To be fair though, the police department is expected to have low tolerance with these things in light of recent events.

11/20/2015 10:43:06 AM
this does absolutely nothing to erode trust you pompous twits.

11/20/2015 12:42:36 PM
He may as well have fired shots in the air/crowd if he's going to get fired for doing nothing.

11/20/2015 1:35:46 PM
So he says he is going to resign Friday, jams out with his favorite band, and his boss basically goes "Singing in uniform? You know what, you can't quit cause you're fired...2 days early."

11/20/2015 2:29:24 PM
Did any of you actually read the article? He doesn't want his job back because he was intending to leave the following week. All this "give him his job back" shit, he was done anyway.

11/20/2015 3:47:27 PM
^^ No. fck that. I've already set up a GoFundMe to pay all of his bills and living expenses while he endures this tragic adversity. #ACAB

11/20/2015 4:07:44 PM
Anybody in Wisconsin remember when Brian Werner went to the Black Holocaust museum and put up flyers that said "White Power" why are we letting this jerk get publicity https://www.stormf ront.org/forum/t238 66/

11/20/2015 4:11:11 PM
Granted it was 12 years ago, but still...

11/20/2015 4:16:23 PM
Cops are under siege for all kinds of bullshit, add this to the long line. Don't you dare participate in any kind of community event we want robots.

11/20/2015 6:11:39 PM
Why doe everyone have to resort to cops shoot black kids when this has nothing to do with that. Okay I guess I gotta be the jerk and point out. The Police officer was not there to entertain the crowd. He his primary duty was to protect the crowd, and the band. When he swore his oath following orders was part of it. Looking cool wasn't part of his oath.

11/20/2015 6:41:43 PM
murder black kid in cold blood = suspended
get on stage with some random band nobody has ever heard of = fired

11/20/2015 8:06:09 PM
'Someone in the audience sent a video of Ricks' performance to the police department late Tuesday'

LOL. what a fcking piece of shit.

11/21/2015 6:59:34 AM
So because he acted like a human being trying to have a bit of fun it eroded trust... uhh... I remember cops skateboarding and riding bmx with us at the park. We respected them more because they could relate to us. This is beyond ridiculous.

11/21/2015 11:32:23 AM
all sorts of gayness has been landing vital remains in the news lately. good press for them i guess lol.

11/22/2015 4:33:32 AM
Alright, which one of you Lambgoat pussies tipped off the PD? The people who comment on these threads are the biggest pieces of shit I've ever witnessed. So, by my calculations, it had to be one of you.

11/25/2015 1:36:00 PM
He must have the worst union rep.

11/29/2015 7:53:06 AM
The smartest person of this whole story is obviously the cop for intending on quitting anyways. Great era to be a cop. Let a n11gger shoot at you = death but shoot back at a n11gger = first degree murder. What a hot job commodity it is.

11/29/2015 7:54:09 AM
it's okay though because Obamacare will cover his vital remains for the rest of his natural life
