Victory Records and Spotify resolve royalty dispute

Tuesday, November 10, 2015 12:32 PM PT

Victory Records and Spotify look to have resolved their dispute over unpaid publishing royalties, a conflict that Victory claimed would eventually cost the label both jobs and artists.

Victory has confirmed that their entire catalog is now once again available via Spotify.

Meanwhile, AbsolutePunk reportedly received this information from a Victory Records employee:

"Nobody's job was ever in jeopardy. Tony [Brummel, Victory owner] was speaking rhetorically when he was quoted. We're glad to have our content back on Spotify, and that we came to a good resolution that works for everybody, ensuring that our fans can listen to the music they love on Spotify and that all of our artists and songwriters are paid for their work."

"Nobody's job was ever in jeopardy. Tony [Brummel, Victory owner] was speaking rhetorically when he was quoted. "

Of course he was. Anyone that wasn't a total idiot got that. But, that excludes 85% of the people who comment on sites like this.

Coming up in the metal, "CHOP SUY" was an Instant classic and we disnt have to go the spotify route but daren almost put us In hot jeopardy when he almost uploaded our new album to napster thinking it was iTunes!! Needless to say SHAVO was mad but I reminded him of his cool new blue bass strings and well the matter is settled to this day. But spotify or no iTunes, victory has always been a ally and we took them on the road with us and they were timely and cordgile :) cool

Yourself included? For thinking that most posters here believe that Brummel is always on the up and up?

I work at victory and I can honestly say that everyone's job is in fact in jeopardy everyday, and that's because we put out horrible music that no one cares about.

"Victory" is the wrong name for this label.

Victory records could have gone down as one of the great late labels if they quit 20 years ago.

I've never seen a label owner stick his neck out so far to get Otep and The Bunny The Bear their $9.48 spotify checks. This man is a hero.

I'm kinda confused on how you can say that you will need to fire people if you don't paid, and have that be a 'rhetorical' statement.

Do they know the definition of rhetorical? (Now THAT is rhetorical)

Actual former Victory employee here. Tony wasn't too terrible. He'd do shit like buy us all pizza for lunch, but then blather on about how sales quotas weren't being met. He wouldn't talk about contract stuff to us plebes who wanted to learn more about how the record industry works. All in all, it's a very uncomfortable place to be. He cares more about work ethic and sales performance than the actual music these days. No one should be surprised by this.
