Metallica set to begin work on new album

Friday, January 17, 2014 12:21 PM PT

In a new interview with Billboard.com, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett reveals that the band will soon commence work on the follow up to 2008's Death Magnetic. Hammett had the following to say:

"[We will begin] in a couple of weeks. When we start, that's going to be our main priority, and we're pretty excited about it because we've been saying we need to start working on this album, but we've been procrastinating greatly with it. We've pretty much come up with every sort of excuse we can not to start work on the album, but we've run out of excuses, so we pretty much have to start work on it now."

However, Hammett tells Billboard that it's going to be a challenge to orchestrate their glut of new ideas and riffs:

" We're a band that never has a shortage of ideas. You hear about these bands that are sitting in the studio and they don't have any songs, what are they gonna do? That's not Metallica. Metallica's problem is the total opposite. We have too many ideas. James [Hetfield] has, like, 800 ideas. I have 400. Those number alone are just crazy. That's formidable."

Too many ideas? Isn't this the same band that made a documentary showing their frustrations of writing a record from scratch? And being creatively bankrupt?

800 ideas and "Fran-tic-tic-tic-tic-tic- tic-toc" makes the album.

1200 ideas for a bad record. Should've stopped hurting us many moons ago. I will say that I respect their live shows for still playing mostly 80s stuff that people love to hear.

"We have like 1200 grammatically flawed ideas, ya know, like 'what don't kill me, make me more strong.' Shit like that, ya know."

will not be better than Lulu or St. Anger, which were both undoubtedly superior to their early records

hope the drums sound like Lars beating on broken trash cans again

LuLu was slightly better than Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music.

I just hope they do the right thing and make another sequel to the unforgiven. Then a prequel. Then have another crying session with Dave Mustaine. We could also use another "some kind of monster" to showcase how the biggest metal band in history are a bunch of crybabies stuck in a state of arrested development.
