Roadrunner Recs closes UK, international offices

Thursday, April 26, 2012 9:17 AM PT

Within the past hour, news has begun to circulate suggesting that Roadrunner Records UK was closing. Further research has unveiled mention of their German offices are closing as well. However, strangely, we cannot yet find a source for all of the buzz. If you know anything, hit us up.

Update #1: According to Ed Stone, "Roadrunner cuts today are international and not just in the UK."

Update #2: We've been told that Roadrunner parent company Warner Music Group is closing Roadrunner's European offices in a cost cutting move.

Update #3: Roadrunner publicist Kirsten Sprinks has the following to say via Twitter: "It's true - we are all out of a job... So, it's safe to say it's a truly horrible day."

Update #4: In addition to Roadrunner UK closing, we can confirm that Roadrunner Records Canada has closed as well, with its employees now terminated.

Update #5: Billboard has revealed that approximately 36 worldwide staffers have been let go. Additionally, sixteen staffers in the U.S. will lose their jobs as well. Finally, in the wake of the layoffs and office closures, Roadrunner Records founder and CEO Cees Wessels will be resigning his post with the label.

Trivium's Matt Heafy has subsequently taken to Twitter to rant:

No care ever, shit label with shit bands. Trivium can fck off

anonymous
4/26/2012 10:18:24 AM
That is what they get for having such shit bands as Nickleback and Trivium. Makes me want to pirate their shitty music just to make them lose sales.

anonymous

They've been on the edge for a while if Nicklebong and Slipknarf never came along this would've happened 9yrs ago

BOAT RUDDER STRANGE MOUNTAIN!

4/26/2012 10:37:19 AM
Maybe they'll kick this gay band off the label next.

4/26/2012 11:05:21 AM
Trivium singer: YOU OWE ME MONEY!

go join Cory Brandan and have a cry-off.

If you wrote good music, I'd buy your album. You dont. I don't even listen to Trivium and I avoid any show or tour they're not because they suck. So, if this whiny bitch wants to save his "friends" jobs, he should break up his band and find another way to, "pay rent."

4/26/2012 11:16:20 AM
Heafy, quality dude. Capharnaum guy knows what's up.

4/26/2012 11:32:34 AM
wow no one sees this isn't about the bands ("trivium sucks, no care") this is about shit majors that are running themselves into the ground and churning out machined bullshit doing the same to other genres. now they are eating up the minors then destroying them. roadrunner fcked up selling out to begin with. this is bullshit. garbage like this makes me happy to fcking steal from labels and give my cash to bands themselves.

anonymous
4/26/2012 11:36:25 AM
Trivium isn't a pop group?

anonymous
4/26/2012 11:40:34 AM
Blaming piracy is the go to for shitty bands. A lot of bands gladly make their music available for free. Piracy isn't the reason you aren't making money, douche from Trivium, it's that your shitty music is falling out of style.

4/26/2012 11:58:25 AM
Write another Capharnaum record and I'll pretend to listen to your rants.

anonymous
4/26/2012 11:58:53 AM
^But the kids still come to the shows brauuuugh

anonymous
4/26/2012 12:14:25 PM
funny that he says its piracy
on badcamp artists make money by name your price option

trivium just sucks

anonymous
4/26/2012 12:15:24 PM
that's what happens when you sign at the skylines

anonymous
4/26/2012 12:23:14 PM
Good, dinosaurs will fcking die and I hope Matt Heafey and his family starve to death.

Information wants to be free, and RR is dead because their shitty music was rightfully liberated. Good riddance to shit labels who don't know how to adapt with technology.

crybaby in metalcore wannabe band wants a business to be a charity. outlook on life-flip.

anonymous
4/26/2012 12:26:06 PM
I think it realy sucks people are losing there jobs but Roadrunner was so much better in the nineties, now htey have shit like nickelback. fcking gay. The only good bands they sign anymore are bands that have been around forever being awesome like Megadeth.

4/26/2012 12:29:50 PM
I blame free album downloads ... oh wait nobody downloads that gay shit anyways. Okay next

4/26/2012 12:35:28 PM
"Roadrunner publicist Kirsten Sprinks has the following to say via Twitter: "It's true - we are all out of a job... So, it's safe to say it's a truly horrible day.""

I hope your family starves to death on welfare you white trash nu-metal rock and roll gays

anonymous

Hell, playing music should just be charity work these days. fck, it's a "live to work" lifestyle anymore unless your family is rich, or you got big t-ts. can I get an hell yea?

4/26/2012 1:14:45 PM
Matt Heafy is a jerkoff crying about "good people in the music business". Most successful people in the business are the ones who know how to market bullshit and turn it into a commodity..wait, that's what his "good people" did with Trivium...

4/26/2012 1:17:05 PM
Also, RR hasn't been shit since the 90's...they went from Obituary and Sepultura to Nickelback and Trivium and sold off their integrity way before they sold out their employees

4/26/2012 1:22:44 PM
You guys don't even know what a good record label is. so shut the fck up. Roadrunner set the bar for all other metal labels to follow. And for people who say they could adapt? they signed Nickelback. They adapted pretty well to go from selling thousands of records to MILLIONS. Keep denying the fact that piracy is a crime. Only reason any of you monkeys have jobs is we haven't figure out how to steal what you make or sell. ;)

anonymous
4/26/2012 1:26:06 PM
Sucks all those people lost their jobs. If Heafy really cared he would kill himself to boost album sales CDs always sell better after you die.

anonymous
4/26/2012 1:29:07 PM
RR is a major metal label w/o any allegiance beyond their own wallet...yea it's business but it's nice to see RR get kicked in the balls for all the bands they didn't give proper pushes to...They settle for quantity over quality.....when you step in that realm don't expect us to shed a tear for you whores

anonymous
4/26/2012 1:39:19 PM
Didn't Lifeforce Records give ol' Heafy & Co. his big break?

anonymous
4/26/2012 1:54:38 PM
Its sad and dudes please stop that trivium stuff they are indeed a very talented band ! I listen all kinds of metal and yea there are also a few bands i dont like but keep your opinion to yourself and support metal you gay or go listen to pop...

anonymous
4/26/2012 2:04:58 PM
didn't see that coming

4/26/2012 2:17:15 PM
Any label that thinks it can survive on CD sales is like Nintento thinking the Wii 2 will save them from smartphones. Your business model is founded on luring musicians into giving up all their rights so you can funnel money up to Warner. Meanwhile the small independents are using profit share to steal away all the current and talented bands. Time for a rethink.

anonymous
4/26/2012 2:23:31 PM
Matthew Heafy is not stoked

anonymous
4/26/2012 2:28:43 PM
I cant wait for Apple to release a music label.

So all bands will have only itunes CD

4/26/2012 2:35:35 PM
The days of the mid-major record companies (like Roadrunner) are dying. The artists are doing all of the promotion themselves, thanks to sites like YouTube. Who needs an A+R on a mid five figure salary to just surf YouTube videos all day, looking for the next trend to market to the music-buying sheep of the world?

anonymous
4/26/2012 2:38:49 PM
Seriously? Is this just about Trivium? No. Think about the people who have lost their jobs because of this corporate bullshit. As if being a metal musician wasn't hard enough, nobody gets paid what they're owed anymore and Roadrunner have more market flow than any other label. So how long before we see it happen to other smaller labels? Piracy is one thing, but bands don't make money from CD sales anyway; its from people buying tickets to their shows, buying their merch AND buying their CDs.

4/26/2012 2:48:11 PM
interesting. RR did PR for other label (ferret, trustkill whatever crappy name they have now, tooth and nail, etc) and they were damn good at it. gotta admit thats going to hurt a lot of people

4/26/2012 2:48:36 PM
come to texas, lots of landscaping jobs. the mexies will squeeze you in the bed of the truck. 18 in a small cab is no problem

4/26/2012 4:25:55 PM
I blame Roadrunner for allowing Nickelback to have a career. Good riddance.

anonymous
4/26/2012 4:34:23 PM
LOL @ the state of Trivium's career at this point. Go back to posting photos of the gourmet food and expensive alcohol you consume on tour every night you fcking ingrate.

4/26/2012 4:35:55 PM
The whole label is likely going to get shut down worldwide. Maybe they should've not gouged people for their CD prices! $18 for a CD is ridiculous!

anonymous
4/26/2012 5:42:53 PM
maybe matthew should do a little more practicing and a little less crying on twitter, especially if he wanted to save his "friends" jobs over at roadrunner.

anonymous
4/26/2012 7:33:48 PM
All you people with your negative bullshit comments about the people that got fired starving to death, and their families too, I hope you fcks burn in hell, and rot to death, you are all true human scum. I'm truly sorry this happened to rr uk, god bless you all. Peace and blessings to you.

4/26/2012 7:35:43 PM
Signing metal bands from Finland every other week won't help sales ever. Too bad this is happening, fck the economy.

anonymous
4/26/2012 9:43:13 PM
all i can say is "hate the game" thats how business works. cut cost by diy recording like periphery and those kinds of newer bands and get in line with the internet audience. trust that as times change so does the way fans interact with music.

4/26/2012 9:45:32 PM
Roadrunner should shut down entirely.
The 90's are not stoked

roadrunner hasnt been relevant for like 15 years

4/27/2012 4:21:40 AM
I just remembered: Theory Of A Deadman was/is signed to RR. If signing Nickelback didn't invoke the laws of karma, signing TOAD sure as fck did

The only reason people crying about "stealing" music doesn't drive me completely insane is the smug satisfaction in knowing that they WILL lose, and because they're too fcking dumb to adapt they WILL starve.

You will never, EVER make money selling digital music ever again. If you can't accept this you deserve to lose everything because you are a retard.

anonymous
4/27/2012 7:13:22 AM
It wasn't until the introduction of digital music that allowed an over abundance of shit labels and exposure to far too many lousy bands....... Nothing is for free, so if the younger generations think that music is something they are owed at no cost, they can just eat it because last I knew guitar shops were not giving away their instruments for free. Playing in bands is hard costly work and good bands deserve to make a living at it.

DP from GJ will be having a fckin' field day.

anonymous
4/27/2012 7:56:25 AM
anybody who wants all music to solely be digital download is a fcking retard. Read a fcking book, a real one with pages, and please start with 1984 you fcking twits. I doubt any of you are smart enough to figure out why hard copies should be kept alive.

4/27/2012 11:03:21 AM
If being a musician is hard work and metal musicians deserve to get paid, why are you letting your labels make $10 for every $1 they make? Exploiting people is not a sustainable business model, no matter how much they claim to give back to "development". Roadrunner is done because their bosses are greedy and think downloading is a fad that can be legislated away.

4/29/2012 12:37:06 PM
Anyone of you that hasn't worked at a label for years doesn't know shit about what you're talking about.

Wile E. Coyote wins.

anonymous
4/30/2012 7:32:08 AM
Anyone who's "worked at a label for years" is a waste of life and a sucker. Either create some real fcking art, get a real job or kill yourself. If you're a music industry stooge your job shouldn't exist in the first place.

Hey Matt, why don't you just get your mega loaded daddy to hire another PR company again to shop your 20th rate crappy Metallica band to a new greedy shit label, I hate whiny rich kids.
