Hardcore punk outfit Refused has secured a spot in the Swedish Music Hall Of Fame as the organization's tenth induction has added seven more artists considered among the greatest in Swedish music history. The group formed in 1991 in Umeå, Sweden comprised of vocalist Dennis Lyxzén, guitarist Kristofer Steen, drummer David Sandström, and bassist Magnus Flagge.
The organization gave the following reasons for Refused's induction:
The hardcore band Refused has had an enormous influence on heavy music worldwide. After forming in Umeå in 1992, Refused quickly became known for their intense energy, political lyrics, and innovative musical style. Their groundbreaking album The Shape of Punk to Come (1998) is considered a milestone in the genre, where they pushed the boundaries of what hardcore could be by incorporating electronic elements, jazz, and improvisation. Their experimentation set a new standard both musically and conceptually, and the album naturally finds its place among other punk classics on record shelves around the world.
The electric tension that defines the album also led to the band's demise. When Refused reunited 14 years later, their status as pioneers of the genre became even clearer. With an uncompromising attitude, bold experimentation, and political engagement, Refused has not only shaped the sound of the hardcore genre but also its cultural and ideological landscape. The band's ability to challenge norms and continuously evolve has made them a global phenomenon and an indispensable part of punk and hardcore rock history.
Including the artists presented today, a total of 79 names have been chosen over the years by various juries, all considered to have had significant importance in the development of Swedish popular music. For entry into the Swedish Music Hall of Fame, the inductees must have made their record debut at least 20 years ago.
