Maryland Deathfest going on hiatus, may never return
The first installment of MDF took place in 2003.
Venerable extreme metal festival Maryland Deathfest (aka MDF) will not take place in 2023 and perhaps never again, founders Ryan Taylor and Evan Harting have announced.
The pair issued the following statement over the weekend:
"While we continue to work diligently on the long-awaited 18th edition of MDF that will finally take place next month, we'd like to share some thoughts with you about the future of MDF.
"We're sorry to inform you that we will not be organizing any festivals at all in 2023, including Maryland Deathfest. There's a chance that 2022 could be the last edition of MDF, but we're unable to determine that right now one way or another. What we can say now is that we're going on hiatus and we'll decide during this much needed break if the festival will return in 2024. There are many variables at play that will impact the decision to possibly bring it back in 2024, including the state of the world and if we have the ability to put other things in our personal lives on hold to give the event the kind of attention it has always needed and received.
"When we set out to plan the first edition of MDF 20 years ago, we could have never imagined that we'd still be doing it all of these years later. We have committed so much time and energy into making MDF what it is, never once taking a break. Considering the grassroots nature of the event, it feels like a miracle that we've made it this far. On top of the typical stresses and challenges over the years, these last 2 years in particular have added so many additional elements of surprise and uncertainty that have added to the exhaustion of it all and led us to this decision of going on hiatus. Simply put, our minds and bodies need a break, and we hope that everyone can understand and respect this decision.advertisement"We understand how much this event means to so many of you and realize that this news can be pretty disappointing, but at the same time, we hope that we've provided you with countless positive memories and a chance to develop new friendships while attending MDF over the years. We appreciate every single person that has ever supported and attended the event, as without you, there's no way we would have made it this far. We're just a couple of guys that got into extreme music 25+ years ago in middle/high school that wanted to support the music we love, never imagining that MDF would turn into a cultural institution that has seen over 700 bands from nearly 40 countries hit the stage.
"Based on this news, you should definitely soak in your experience at MDF this year more than you were already planning on. If you were on the fence about going, perhaps now is the time to fall on the side of attending, as the future is uncertain.
"We look forward to finally meeting you all again next month and will be following up soon with more information about this year's event."

honestly it probably takes so much time organizing this event with constant booking emails from European bands trying to come over and shit. I've never gone but the lineups over the years have always been super awesome.
Collectively this wipes the bathroom floor with the dead "Hellfests" that had occurred over the years-no taking the money and running,no venues cancelling out last minute & no dudes in ladies Jeans in attendance. granted, there might have been some hessians with poor hygiene. i.e.-(needing a shower to get the spilled Molson golden stench outta their clothes.)
people with smelly jackets covered in patches are bummed
The only reason to cancel the festival is if it's not making money. hire someone to do it if it's "too stressful" if it's money just say it's money
You better come out, this is probably the last one. ::Announces 2023 festival during 2022 festival::
So in other words, no one goes to this so it's ending…

There will be a lot of well dressed adults at this. >>> Still bent out of shape about being 37, still wearing a hoodie, t-shirt & shorts (dressing like a 17 year old) & me calling you out for it huh? What's your Venmo? I feel bad about living inside your head rent-free.
^^^ ayyyye it's this guy! I wanna dress more like you so I got some zip-off cargo pants and a fedora.
anal c*nt reunion please ^^^^^cant, the singer died like 10 years ago

The fest did sell out this year, so I doubt this decision was financially motivated

It's the guy who brags in the Lambgoat comments about dressing like a youth pastor. >>> You're the grown ass man who wears tee, hoodie & shorts cuz he hasn't become an adult mentally or emotionally. Polo & pants ain't youth pastor it's being an adult moron. Keep crying about it. Keep getting no pussy either incel.
God damned bill gates up in here giving fashion advice with a whole lotta snark.
I'm glad that our step-father is here to tell us how to dress.
Polo & pants ain't youth pastor it's being an adult moron lol might be true but it's def in line with casual Matt Gaetz or Denny Hastert or Jim Jordan or Roy Moore or Howard Heldreth or David Swartz or Misla Aldorondo or Philip Giordono or Peter Dibble or Mark Grethen. you'd look like one of those guys
^^^ No Democrats or independents wear collared shirts including polos or pants ever LOL you idiot. You dress like Trump supporting hicks into Kid Rock. I don't care how I look to someone else, I want to present myself as an adult because I am an adult, but you keep dressing like an Ozzfest leftover.
^^^ A buttonup & jeans are better. White tee & jorts & you're a mullet away from being some white trash piece of shit who gets busted on an episode of Cops.

You guys just had a two year break. Not sure what you're even on about. Tell the truth metal shows are dying and it's not profitable. Some of those bands expect unrealistic guarantees and you'd have to charge $1k a ticket to make money after paying them yet they fail to realize the only way to get people to an event is packing it with 20-40 bands.
I'll wear my skinny Jean's and death metal t shirt and dont really care if anyone doesnt like it. Lol
