August Burns Red album 'Guardians' debuts in Top 60

Guardians, the eighth proper full-length from Pennsylvania metalcore band August Burns Red, has debuted at No. 53 on the Billboard 200 with first-week pure album sales of roughly 10,500 in the United States (more than 12,000 in album equivalent units).

Meanwhile, the album landed at No. 3 on the Top Current Albums Sales chart, No. 1 on the Hard Rock Albums chart, No. 1 on the Independent Albums chart, and No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart.

Guardians' commercial debut represents a significant decline when compared to its predecessor, Phantom Anthem, which moved 17,000 in pure album sales and 19,000 equivalent album units in its first week and bowed at No. 19 on the Billboard 200.

The marked drop is likely the result of the current coronavirus pandemic, which has prompted some bands to delay their spring album releases to avoid the sales ramifications of a beleaguered supply chain and the inability to perform live. To their credit, August Burns Red acknowledged the risk but chose to release the album on schedule.

Releasing a new album amid a global pandemic seems to have had an identical effect on the new Testament album, Titans of Creation, which sold less than half the copies of their previous album during its debut week.
