Best Buy to stop selling CDs this year

Once one of the most powerful music retailers, the last few years have found Best Buy repeatedly reducing the size of its CD offering, as the Internet continues to take its toll on the music industry. Now, according to a report at Billboard, Best Buy will be removing CDs entirely from its stores this summer.

Billboard says that the retailer has informed its music suppliers that come July 1, CDs will no longer be sold at Best Buy. Sources tell Billboard that CD sales have been generating roughly $40 million annually, apparently not enough to be considered viable.

Best Buy will, however, continue to sell vinyl for at least two more years.

Meanwhile, Billboard also says that Target is now threatening suppliers to stop selling their CDs unless they are made available via consignment terms (meaning Target only pays suppliers when a CD is sold).
