Metal singer becomes first openly transgender state legislator

Yesterday (Tuesday, November 7) Danica Roem was elected to a U.S. statehouse seat in Virginia. Notably, Roem will be one of the nation's first openly transgender elected officials.

Roem, a Democrat, defeated Republican Bob Marshall, a social conservative opposed to LGBT rights. Among his slights, Marshall refused to debate Roem during the campaign and referred to her using male pronouns.

Not only is Roem now a stage legislator, but she's also the singer of a thrash metal band called Cab Ride Home.

"Just because I sing in a heavy metal band while spinning my head in circles and getting paid to do it, why can't I run for government? Why would I have to change who I am in order to run for government? I've already had to go through transformative change," Danica told Noisey earlier this year.
