5 Essential Ice Nine Kills Non Singles

Ice Nine Kills

INK live!

By Scott Waldman

It may surprise casual fans of horror/metalcore/screamo/post-hardcore act Ice Nine Kills that the band started out as a (gasp) ska-punk band before venturing to the dark side. However, it will not surprise ardent INK super-fans that the band is six full length studio albums in and shows no signs of slowing down in any way, shape, or form. We attempted to list five essential Ice Nine Kills non-singles in release order, and you will learn that their deep cuts in fact hurt:

“Jonathan” from The Predator Becomes the Prey (2014)

Let's start with 2014 on the band's third record The Predator Becomes the Prey: This seemingly is the band's last more straight-ahead LP sans a ton of horror and potentially the first full-length studio album that you and only you heard from the band. By definition, track seven, “Jonathan,” is a deep cut but it deserves both your attention and praise… or would you call this the end of the road?

“The Plot Sickens” from Every Trick in the Book (2015)

Track four may not be a deep cut per se, but since Every Trick in the Book is ten concise songs front to back with half of its songs being singles, it's a pity that for some dastardly and unintelligent reason “The Plot Sickens” ISN'T one of them. What the hell (in the hallways). Fun fact: This record is 37 minutes and thirty-seven seconds, which is badass. Coincidence? We're unsure, but we'll find a way make it out alive!

“Rocking the Boat” (featuring former band member Jeremy Schwartz) from The Silver Scream (2018)

FYI: This is the first of two underrated INK tracks from their blockbuster fifth album The Silver Scream to be listed here. It's truly badass when a band has a good enough relationship with a former band member to still collaborate with them, and Jeremy Schwartz, one of two original members of INK, had a chance to rock out with his old bandmates on this unappreciated gem. Fun opinion: This is our favorite song on this list so blast it on a cruise ship that hopefully doesn't end like Triangle of Sadness.

“Love Bites” (featuring Chelsea Talmadge from Stranger Things) from The Silver Scream (2018)

Most bands don't have stars like Chelsea Talmadge from major television shows like Stranger Things on their records, but most bands aren't Ice Nine Kills! Period. Not to be confused with Halestorm's hit, INK's “Love Bites” was inspired by An American Werewolf In London, and truly rips, pun intended, front to back. The softer the skin, the sharper the teeth.

"Ex-Mørtis" from The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood (2021)

With the exception of The Godfather Part II and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, sequels are often laughable continuations of the stories from the originals, but The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood is arguably just as good, if not better than The Silver Scream. However, for one reason or another, “Ex-Mørtis” just didn't connect with as large of an audience as many of the songs chronologically before it. Maybe it's because it's track thirteen? We don't know but that should entice you.
