Emmure's Frankie Palmeri says metal scene is officially over-saturated

12/31/2014 7:50:36 AM PT   comments [96]

Emmure vocalist Frankie Palmeri

Emmure frontman Frankie Palmeri took to Twitter yesterday to lament the glut of metal and hardcore bands in the scene. Here's what he had to say:

"How many active hardcore and metal bands are there now? Jesus fucking Christ. Straight up...back in the day...getting a deal and a booking agent and representation was like winning the fucking lottery. Now thanks to the internet and back scratching every mother fucker screaming against guitars has been monetized.

"I am not trying to depreciate the art and craft of other people..but the "scene" is officially over fucking saturated. I love music. I love making music. I love hearing new bands...but I seriously can't keep up with all the names I see on the daily. Not to say there hasn't always been a plethora of bands doing it but I seriously can't tell the difference anymore between who is doing what.

"Quite honestly...shit ain't ever really been too different. It's always been like this. It's just more visible now because of the internet. Which is in fact the ultimate double edge sword for all artists at any capacity. But on the very REAL REAL I am not trying to expose or take away the fire from other people. Work hard , blow your band up. Don't quit."

stupid words from a stupid man.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 8:29:48 AM
First, we have Behemoth's Nergal shit on modern Extreme Metal, and now Frankie decided to put in his two cents. I wonder if they think speaking ill of the, "scene," will actually do anything? Or, is it an exercise in vanity?
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 8:45:18 AM
He's right. There are too many bands out there making it difficult to sift through all the bullshit. So since he brought it up, maybe he could do everyone a favor and cut that list of shitty bands down by one and disband Emmure. Thanks.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 8:55:06 AM
Why the fck would anyone want less music?
Don't you like music?
Why is more music a problem?
No one ever says that paintings.
"Shit, there are just too many people painting. Back in day, getting in a gallery was so tough. Now every painter and their mom is in a gallery!"
Yo, everyone is winning, shut up.
More bands get to make more music, and more people get to hear more bands.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 8:59:13 AM
He's actually right though.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 9:13:47 AM
He's not bringing anyone down. I get what he's saying and with the Internet creating a band and touring is more of a hobby nowadays. It's a young man's game. most bands that semi make it now either have "the look" or they a have no real job and live at home so they have all the time in the world to sit on the Web and promote and link and gather friends for their fb. most the bands that have been signed pre 2007 2008ish did work hard and build a local gathering.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 9:14:48 AM
Admittedly, he is correct in his assessment yet not without a great deal of irony. His band is one of the many cookie cutter bands that exist in an amorphously amalgamation of sonic tepidness.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 9:17:12 AM
He's right regardless if emmure is a never ending generic break down band too many coming on with shitty fcking clean vocals That sounds like a cat in heat sucking helium from a balloon, it's all a copy and paste of something that's been done and some bands are just way to obvious I think the point he is making is (bring on the butt hurt) metalcore and this post hardcore garbage is all the same anymore
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 9:19:11 AM
Hes right tho back in the day you had to earn a spot in all this not just throw shit up on the internet

anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 10:10:08 AM
The problem isn't the amount of bands. The problem is the business of metal and hardcore. How bands are force-fed down our throats when we couldn't fcking care less. The filter of only being exposed to what you and your friends showed each other has been overrun with management/labels/etc buying advertising on websites and social media and facefcking us with their bullshit regularly.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 10:29:05 AM
This douche is simply the second coming of fred durst, he said the same shit about "nu metal" cant wait to see you working at wal mart dip shit.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 10:31:19 AM
People calling Emmure generic should also remember how long they've been doing this. Yes their music sounds generic and awful now, but in the beginning of their career there were nowhere near as many sound-alike bands.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 10:32:26 AM
so basically 'fck YOU AND YOUR BAND... but don't let me stop you...'
his tweets are worse than his lyrics
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 10:42:59 AM
I love how he's sitting here saying that the metal/hardcore scene is over-saturated yet, his band is easily one of the most generic bands to come out of the genre.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 10:54:22 AM
Dude you jacked acacia strain straight up. You're the garbage not doing anything new. Just making terrible open corded numetal for nu jacks that eventually pick up a guitar to create more garbge hybrid metal hardcore bands. This dudes opinion will forever be invalid.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 11:07:51 AM
Dude from Emmure talking about "back in the day"?
Back in what day? Yesterday? Hardcore is arguably somewhere around 40 years old and his band is a NEW band in that timeline. Pre-Emmure hardcore still had a shit ton of bands but at least we didn't have Emmure.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 11:15:18 AM
And it became saturated right around the time his band arrived. Hmm...
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 11:21:05 AM
"...It's over-saturated, but don't quit."

That logic is quite strong.

So shut up Frankie. All these bands do is crap talk each other now when they're the same. Don't get too full of yourself

Frankie is jealous that his band is back in the van and downsizing quickly while the new crop of rise core bands instantly have a deal, Dave shapiro booking them and slots on these big tours. It's not like emmure started in the 80s, booking shows on pay phones with calling cards. They started 10 years with hype from MySpace and when victory was signing every single fcking band. It was no different back then.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 12:20:27 PM
I gotta be honest, I feel the same way. I mean, there are so many bands out now that honestly sound the exact same way. hell, there are so many local bands where I'm from that sound the same! I understand people that like the music and and such, which is great! but so much. me personally, im just sick of this scene. so many bands sound the same and nothing new. all this is my opinion, but I'm just being honest with what I think. All these bands are the same and honestly just generic shit!

If your only intention as a band is "to get signed and get a booking agent" you obviously don't give a shit about integrity. Pay-to-play motherfckers ruin it for everyone.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 1:02:34 PM
Yes!!! I remember back in the MySpace days when emmure came to my attention, as well as many of the early deathcore bands got major attention. Pre MySpace bands had to put in major leg work the 've known. In the beginning their were an abundance of bands that no one heard of. But thanks to social media now it's at a focal point. He right and wrong. We now know these bands faces becaue of the internet. But they've always be there.

He's right in what he is saying and all new and upcoming metal bands sound exactly like everything else or want to sound similar to a big name popular hardcore band. No one is creating something that sounds different and away from the crowd independence in this industry has just fcked right off.

Kind of "The pot calling the kettle black" isn't it? I was unfamiliar with Emmure (hate the name)but was intrigued with his comment, so I just checked them out. And wouldn't you know it, they sound like every other "whatever"core band out there. Carbon copy vocals, predictable mosh breakdowns, and bla bla mutha fckin bla.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 2:58:31 PM
I used to love post-hardcore and metalcore, but now all bands sound the same and seems that there is nothing new to discover. I slowly shifted to electronic music (not EDM copy and paste shit, the other electronic music) to hear new things that can challenge my ears. This genre is completely over.

One the the best parts about music is discovering new bands and music that you like... of course there are new bands popping up everyday... you just have to sift through til you find the ones you like.
There's no need to shit on people who are giving it a go.
anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 5:04:01 PM
That's funny, Frank, because I can't tell the difference between emmure and the static in between radio stations. Just because you use big words doesn't mean people can't see that you're full of shit. Make up your mind. Either you think the scene is too full, or you think people should continue promoting themselves.

Queer plays in a generic toughguy shit band, dresses like Fred Durst's autistic nephew, and suddenly forgets his place. The one thing this gay is not meant to have is an opinion. And a chance at living.

anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 6:23:24 PM
Longevity. That's what music in general lacks these days. Not one of the bands out there holds a candle that will burn brighter than a couple of years at best. Nothing grasps the ears. Nothing pulls the attention of the audience. Its not just about getting a crowd to move or to mosh or what have you. Its also about them relating to something substational. All artists are focused on a polished sound and are missing passion in their art.

anonymous   posted 12/31/2014 11:04:56 PM
People who bitch and moan about a genre being dead or there not being any new, good music out there are imbeciles. Get off of lambgoat and explore. Go to a record store and buy something you've never heard of, like you did in the pre-internet days. There will ALWAYS be great music just below the surface and most metal and hardcore is so mainstream now that it's hard to call it underground or under the radar. Do some digging and don't settle for the bullshit they force-feed you.

I grew up with Frankie Palmeri and he's a total dick! He should not be a voice for the hardcore and metal scene. Emmure road up other local bands coat tails (Endwell etc.) and signed to a shitty label (Victory Records) He think he's hot shit. Jesse and Mike Kabae are excellent musicians however Emmure would be better if they replaced their ignorant, chauvinistic, and homophobic vocalist.

The pioneer of over-saturation himself. He should have just said "thanks to my band this shit started. There a ton of other bands that have no talent and make shitty music that are signed because we made it popular."
anonymous   posted 1/1/2015 9:50:33 PM
All he said was that due to the internet and the massive ease that bands can post themselves and every other band they know in a .2 second window, likely for free, it's over saturating the immediate market. If you cannot grasp what he said, stop reading the internet, go back to English class. fck Screamo btw!

This comment was relevant on 2007 when his band took the acacia strain's style and made it a genre. That's the difference. It's hilarious that fits is being given any coverage in 2015. The acacia strain was one band doing something dumb and fun and it was turned into a songwriting template. That's it

As far as I'm concerned, H2O already called this out years ago.

But in all truth, it does seem that every idiot can pick up a guitar and Mic these days and call themselves a band.
This is why I stopped going to shows years ago.
It's not about friends, good times, seeing people from out of state, being excited for bands, etc.
All it is now is a popularity competition with a bunch of dudes creating bands so they can get pssy and fit in.
anonymous   posted 1/2/2015 1:34:24 PM
