For Today frontman tired of drama and pissed at Lambgoat, others

For Today

In an extensive new interview with Alternative Press, For Today frontman Mattie Montgomery recalled the firestorm ignited a year ago by ex-guitarist Mike Reynolds' "homosexuality is a sin" comments. He also had some harsh words for various websites, condemning them for portraying his band in a negative light just to get more "hits."

Commenting on Reynolds, and the animus between some Christians and homosexuals, Montgomery had the following to say:

"It was frustrating, to say the least. That whole thing blindsided me. And it was exasperated by preexisting issues.

"The fact that there are people who call themselves Christians but go on the news and picket soldiers' funerals and say stuff like "God Hates Fags?" These people totally dishonor God, and disrespect God and they dishonor and disrespect people who are made in God's image.

"There is a bitterness and a polarization that has come and a lot of wounds and defensiveness have developed in the homosexual community toward Christians. That has made them very sensitive toward Christians in general, especially when talking about the issue of homosexuality. I hate it...

"...So yes, it was a frustrating thing, and it was a difficult situation for me to go through because I really do love gay people. I have a whole bunch of people I've been friends with for years who are gay men and women. We have all been forced into this new religious/political paradigm where Christians are pitted against homosexuals in this stupid struggle for political dominance. It's really a political issue. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter."

Montgomery also assailed various media outlets, including Lambgoat, accusing them of throwing his "band under the bus" and putting For Today members' "families' well-being in jeopardy" just for web traffic:

"Outlets like AP, Absolute Punk, Lambgoat, Metal Injection, the PRP and all these places that will do anything to anyone to try to get some hits on their website. They saw one comment out of hundreds of thousands of comments collectively that this band have made and they thought, 'Oh, that's going to stir up some drama.' And they were willing to throw our band under the bus and to put our families' well-being in jeopardy just for the sake of a few more hits on their websites. I think that sucks. I think that's irresponsible journalism. I think it's a reflection of a lack of personal responsibility in your community."

And when asked where he stood on gay marriage, Montgomery was uncharacteristically non-committal:

"I'm not a lawmaker. So, really, my opinions on what laws should and should not be don't matter. But ultimately this is a political issue right now. It seems like homosexual people are seeking, politically, to have equal rights. And I think that's absolutely fair. So, speaking politically, if I was a lawmaker? I would vote to legalize gay marriage. I don't think the United States government has the right to tell people who they can and can't marry. That is my standard across the board. To be completely honest with you, I don't think the United States government has the right to approve a marriage between me and my wife, as a heterosexual man. It's not really their business. The fact that they think they can forbid some people from marrying is ridiculous to me."

Not suprisingly, some of For Today's fans where not happy with Montgomery's passive response.

Mattie can't win for losing

Gotta love how he just pssyfoots around the actual question at hand. It's one thing for you to say you "love" gay people, but in reality his interpretation of the bible and his particular faith makes it so that he hates the sin, loves the sinner. That is such a cop out though, why not take your actual stance and tell everyone that according to the bible you don't think gay people should be allowed to be married and that what they do goes against your particular god's will?

It's okay, I'm friends with a couple black people so I'm allowed to say the n-word.

fcking gayshit
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 5:49:29 PM
He doesn't pssyfoot around it. I love how people only ever read what they want to hear out of it, including the person who posted this article. Nothing wrong with hating the sin and loving the sinner, because according to the Bible, everyone sins. It gets me how people get so pissed off when someone says they think homosexuality is a sin, when you don't use your brain and take into account what else is considered sin, in the book.
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 5:50:49 PM
I don't see anyone saying things like, "He thinks being drunk is a sin, he hates drunks!" or even "He thinks lust is a sin, so he hates literally just about every guy!" or "He thinks sexual immorality is a sin, so he hates everyone who has fun before marriage!" or even, "He hates sin, which inherently, according to the Bible, everyone sins, so he hates himself and everyone else!" Such poor logic in that.
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 5:53:45 PM
so wait, he hates AP for using him to gain hits/whatever but then he did an interview with AP? well. that makes sense.
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 5:54:07 PM
That's like saying I think that people who treat me poorly is wrong, but does that cause us to inadvertently to hate those people with a passion?
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 5:54:36 PM
Not a cop out. He did take his stance. If you seriously find it a revelation that Christianity thinks Homosexuality, along with literally a long list of other things are sins, then you've clearly been hiding in a hole since the times of Jesus. The Bible never actually says much about marriage specifically, it only speaks on it being wrong in the actual sexual sense.
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 5:57:21 PM
My goodness.
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 5:58:05 PM
On the actual sense of homosexuality as the act of within itself. That's why he doesn't say they shouldn't be allowed to, because it is not his say, and it shouldn't be the governments. Yes, he does say it is God's say, but he knows not everyone believes in God and won't listen to God as is. That's the reasoning for that.
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 6:32:38 PM
Regardless of the Glamboat roast, he's right. Its a wedge issue being used by politicians to pit people against each other. And government should NOT be in the marriage business at all. Gay or not.

Who the fuuck cares.

Who let the fcking christgays in here to comment? GTFO. Listen to metal and worship satan 24/7.

Quit being an jerk.
Sometimes I'm amazed that we even have technology at all with the amount of religious retards that still exist.
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 7:04:47 PM
Makes perfect logical sense to call people "christgays" when you are hating on someone that has said that they think being homosexual is a sin, that of which is never them saying they hate gay people. Double standard?
WindsOfPussy   posted 2/13/2014 7:07:32 PM
These guys played my venue a few years ago. Easily the most entitled, uncooperative rockstars I've ever dealt with, and Mattie was the worst. Oddly, Mike Reynolds was the only guy from the whole band who was respectful and friendly. Was a little surprised when he turned out to be the most bigoted.

How the hell can anyone still be religious or like this absolutely terrible band in 2014?
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 10:55:16 PM
It's illogical to think that just because Christian's disagree with a non-Christian's worldview, that that means they're bigots and hateful people. It is possible to be gay and be a Christian, but it's not condoned by the Bible. Christianity says that all of humanity has "sinned and fallen short of the glory of God"(Romans 3:22), "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us"(Romans 5:8).
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 10:56:07 PM
Christianity does not demand us to be perfect, but it asks us and compels us to give up our pride, the idea that says, "whatever I want to do with my life is best" for the sake of letting a Savior who died for us be Lord of our life. It makes sense, if I'm a broken sinner, I will make a terrible ruler of my life. But if Jesus Christ is who he said he was, the Son of God, then he will ultimately know what's best for my life.
anonymous   posted 2/13/2014 11:00:33 PM
If I'm broken and messed up and in need of saving, and Jesus is who he said he was, then submitting to him with every area of life(money, career, lifestyle, hobbies, sexuality) is better than submitting to myself. It's not submitting to a benevolent dictator, it's submitting to a loving Savior that died for his enemies. Thanks for spreading the love, Mattie. Bravo.

I just dont get how you can be dumb enough to believe in a magical god and heaven and hell. A soul? You think you have a soul that transmits your ideas and memories to a place that you cant travel to after you die? This is earth you banana heads, not narnia. Grow up.

Hi everyone! Hope you are having a wonderful Valentine's Day and all.

Just stopped in to remind you that at the end of the day, no matter what you believe,
- the bible was written by people, like Twilight
- sin is a concept thought up by people the way Karl Marx thought up Communism
- being willing to fight & die for your beliefs doesn't make them real

Have a good one!

"I started a christian metalcore band to make money, not to have actual opinions that could come back and show people how bigoted Christianity is. Why don't people just accept my 'because God says so' argument and leave it at that? And why isn't God answering my prayers or helping me out of this pickle that his words got me into in the first place? Its almost like he isn't there.. or something... HELLO?" - Matty

"LOL technically he said the right thing, and now his own fans are gonna turn on him. This band just can't win."
Exactly. This should ultimately clear everything up, but even the webmaster is being a douche and said Mattie didn't take a stance, even though he did. He said that he has no problem with homosexuals and that the government shoudln't stop them from marrying. This is in line with what any logical person should believe and yet he's still getting flack.

It's a shame that some of you militant Christians would charge your own for having a view other than yours. It really astound me that you can be so ignorant. Gay people and are not hurting you by existing. All they are asking for is equality which they should have the right to. He is still a man of god nut you think it's OK for you to tell him he is any less Christian than you because he doesn't militantly hate them. That's just ridiculous.

played with this shit band too many times
aside from their typical c-cky Christian holier-than-thou mentality....everything about their music and "show" is a marketing scam.

a few years ago, even ended up crashing at a local promoter's house after a show with these fine young fellas

they spent almost 5 hours trying to convert everyone in this crack house, talking about Jesus and God like they just smoked weed for the first time.
anonymous   posted 2/18/2014 9:48:25 AM
I have been an atheist for a long time. I do not care at all what anyone from this band thinks about any issue involving homosexuals. If I can publicly express how I hate everything Christianity stands for, then why is it so wrong that they would say noway to gay marriage? Its OBVIOUS that they wouldn't be in support of it. Im tired of this making headlines too. Its as bad as when people play the race card. Intolerance all across the board here, thats why this shit hole of a country will fail
