The Black Dahlia Murder singer calls out 'fans' who steal his band's music

4/18/2013 6:39:50 AM PT   comments [128]

The Black Dahlia Murder frontman Trevor Strnad recently took to Facebook to stress the importance of album sales for his band (you can find his remarks below). Though his initial post apparently caused a bit of a backlash among some fans, which Strnad attempted to rectify via an update, his original point is solid. I see no reason to delete it or backtrack. Basically, any "fan" that doesn't completely empathize with Strnad is an asshole.

Post 1 "HOW IT IS: We have almost 1,000,000 likes on here. Will we sell 1,000,000 copies of Everblack? Fuck no! The reality is that 98% of you 'fans' are going to be content to steal the album and in turn we get nothing… a laughable fragment of the 'likers' will actually be cool and pick it up.

"It's not about the money, the reality is that we get chump change for CD (and digital) sales BUT WE NEED TO SELL THEM TO EXIST! If there are no record sales the music industry will stomp us out like a bug and it'll be completely over… the sales show them 'how relevant' we are.

"If you don't buy the albums they'll determine that there is no demand for TBDM, and there won't be any more awesome concerts, tours, dvds nor new music. Sure we understand you may really love our tunes, but if you haven't paid for them, it's a total loss to us… all the love in the world isn't going to mean shit in the end. We need your support and every two years I am going to ask the same thing of you and make the same goddamn argument.

"Think of it like a vote… If you'd like to see us continue our reign of terror over the metal world, you'll pick up a copy of "Everblack". It's as simple as that. – Trevor on behalf of The Black Dahlia Murder"

Post 2 "Clarification for the alarmists: I'm not saying you who come to the shows and buy merch aren't appreciated… what I am saying is that we need to sell this album because each sale means something in the grand scheme of things. WE ARENT FUCKING RICH. I don't really care if we see ANY money from the preorders or any CD sale AT ALL… like I said…. it's literally a fraction of a penny per album… you can fucking keep it.

"WE MAKE THE MONEY WE SURVIVE ON FROM YOU ALL COMING TO THE SHOWS AND BUYING TICKETS AND MERCH. We are eternally grateful for your support in this manner. This is absolutely true and has not changed. What I am saying is that we need BOTH kinds of support… they are both integral. All I was trying to do is to rally the troops… to help them understand that selling the copies IS important to us… it was not an attempt to alienate anyone. I should have worded things better…. yes.

"For those of you saying that the industry is operating on a completely archaic model… I completely wholeheartedly agree… but until things change this is how it is."

Post 3 "I want to apologize to any of you guys that were bummed out by my frustrated, overly aggressive, and pessimistic posts yesterday. Me and the guys are eternally grateful for all of you and your support, whatever form. THANK YOU! We'll see you this Summer and beyond…"

Metallica is stoked, also he can fck himself. There's no money in metal and they have maybe one good album there's so many bands better than them that make a fraction of what they make and are still alive and kicking.

You know the music world is littered with complete unappreciative jerks when you have to complain about people stealing your music in 2013. However using the word "integral" went right over his fan's heads.
anonymous   posted 4/18/2013 7:51:03 AM
Hes merely sayin that if you dont purchase the album. Record labels and booking agents will think there is no demand for tbdm in your town. So theyll send asking alexandria instead or bmth. People that arent in bands or have no friends in the music biz are fcking clueless.

If you steal from a business, itll will go under...i.e. FYE, SAM GOODY, your local record store

if youre a real fan of music. BUY THE SHIT
bees   posted 4/18/2013 7:59:39 AM
If you're still complaining about people downloading music in 2013, you're fcking up hard. Nothing worse than "giants" like Metallica, LoG and TBDM complaining about record sales when there are so many other bands who are struggling way harder than they are.

Perhaps just cop-out and pull a Misery Signals where you fund your album on kickstarter so you can stop complaining? You're a -core band, you're not gonna sell a ton, record companies know this.

anonymous   posted 4/18/2013 8:31:18 AM
Complaining about people pirating is dumb. Fortunately he was complaining about people not buy albums, which is a little different.

*already has Everblack pre-ordered*
anonymous   posted 4/18/2013 8:31:37 AM
This is the most reasonable argument against downloading I've heard from a band so far. I completely agree with him. I still buy a lot of my music (pre-ordered Everblack on vinyl) and download some stuff sometimes too. But I'm still one of those old school people who likes holding the actual CD. I have no problems with what he said or how he said it. He used a TV ratings-type argument which makes a ton of sense.
anonymous   posted 4/18/2013 8:33:47 AM
If a band that's not as relevant as TBDM points this out that needs the money more, even less people will take notice because the band isn't as important. It's a good point, if you really like the band then you'll support them and buy the album.

Wowwww bunch of fckin imbeciles. You anonymous jerks have no clue how anything works in the music industry. Don't sign to a label? You don't know shit about being a signed band. Do you think they would sign to a label if they knew it would eventually put them in debt? If you stupid fckers don't buy bands music then don't expect to see them tour ever
anonymous   posted 4/18/2013 9:06:19 AM
Merch and ticket sales are not as vital as cd sells (not that they aren't important cause it helps the band get to the next state and be able to eat everyday of tour) cause when its time for Nielsen scoundscans that determines how much the label actually is willing to help and promote them if you're selling shit or not.
anonymous   posted 4/18/2013 9:07:42 AM
They have loads of shit to pay for. Merch which breaks double digits in the thousands, recording costs which is also in the thousands, maintenance of the band vehicle, equipment etc. and for for bands who tour in buses it's up to $2000 a night The bands aren't worried about the money for themselves they are more worried about being able to make more music for their fans.

You don't think record companies monitor the amount of times their music is "stolen"? Good god, all they have to do is look at the pirating site and see how many downloads it has and they can determine the band's relevancy.
But i agree, arguing about "stealing" music in 2013 is retarded.

He's 100% correct on this. For bands, sales aren't about money. It's about how long they get to have a career. Sales are what labels, managers, booking agents, and everyone else in between who has any invested interest in your career look to to decide how much time they're going to keep spending on you. The catch 22 for me is that I, at the same time, don't want to help the pigs who run the labels are on and make them super rich while their artists still struggle.

"TBDM is a boring, played-out sound that doesn't have a place in today's metal scene. Sorry BDM, but you are worse than background noise right about now"

hahaha todays metal is non existant, if you think hair-core bands are metal your clearly a teenager. its hardcore wash up gays who dye there hair black and try to do lows but struggle, struggle to grind, struggle to riff, hundred struggle with speed, but have the breakdowns fcking nailed. Breakdown Teenage BitchCore.
anonymous   posted 4/20/2013 9:25:38 PM
fck Trevor TTEOTD is a better band anyway and their barely a band anymore and you don't hear them complaining
anonymous   posted 4/20/2013 10:04:45 PM
yeah there haircuts are soooo bomb. the have a unique dance when they do breakdowns, and there lyrics are so teenage strife Id sware they are me. Being 16metal is awesomes, so are band names that are so irrelevant they need 5-8 letter abreveations TTEOFDNYPDF. totalz scenez
anonymous   posted 4/20/2013 10:10:26 PM
Through the eyes of the dckhole, class example of scenecore hardcore failure that thinks they are metal or deathmetal, either you are or you arent, if your trying, you already lost the game. Its the music c*ntbag, not the image that you pump all your time into.
anonymous   posted 4/20/2013 10:22:01 PM
Talk all the shit about TBDM that you want but they influence 90 percent of the newer metal bands today in one way or the other and, aside from that the musicianship on their albums is always flawless, especially Miasma .jst took it in a new direction drum wise, riff wise, they are one of the only bands that hasnt slowed down or changed their direction
anonymous   posted 4/21/2013 8:02:10 AM
PART 1. Some of you are living in 2006 I suppose you could argue that tteotd were a bunch of scene kids hell we all were Tteotd & tbdm are both good bands I for one think tteotd is better they have progressed which each release so unless you've been living under a rock listen to their newest release Skepsis (2010)
anonymous   posted 4/21/2013 8:05:30 AM
PART 2. it's clearly Melo Death yes theres breakdowns in it but know your metal history the "Breakdown" as you trolls and metal elitists love to complain about was brought into fruition by traditional death metal bands so it's really dumb to complain about it or bands (tteotd) that use it.....FACE PALM!
anonymous   posted 4/21/2013 10:11:22 AM
TTEOTD is a blatant black dahlia rip off. Seriously fck that band of loser poser scene kids. Justin longshore needs a longhorn nserted in his rectum for rippong bands off so blatantly
anonymous   posted 4/21/2013 10:30:44 AM
Get over yourself ^ everyone rips off everyone besides Deflorate wasn't that great and Ritual kind of sucked and the new song from Everbksck is boring as fck and Trevor knows this, that's why they're stating to feel it in their wallets TBDM is a good band but they know they are less relevant now
anonymous   posted 4/21/2013 10:41:06 AM
You all suck the D's & B's TTEOTD & TBDM are both great bands c'mon lambgoat kids lets just get along you all know The Faceless and Tech Death shits on them anyway
bellini   posted 4/21/2013 11:08:48 AM

Trevor wishes he had a new jerk.
duckduckfootloose   posted 4/22/2013 9:21:14 AM
He's wrong.

A band's value to a label, management, or booking agent is based on how much money they can recoup off their investment.

There are plenty of ways a label can monetize their investment without relying on CD sales, especially since the market value for CDs is plummeting.

And you can't say this is a new concept: labels have been owning their artists in all income vectors (merchandising, tours, management, booking, publishing) since the 40's and 50's.
anonymous   posted 4/22/2013 5:22:36 PM
This is completely understandable... They literally live off of their work and people just steal but call themselves their 'fans'. This didn't make me respect TBDM any less. Let's face it, the metal industry is underground and hard to make money from, and these guys are doing a pretty damn good job along with those circumstances. These guys are extremely talented, write all their own music, yet make nowhere near what 'popular artists' make. Why would you want to screw them over like this?
anonymous   posted 4/22/2013 6:22:35 PM
Love you duders. Preach on Trevor. I have bought every record. And pre ordered everblack. I will always support this band.
anonymous   posted 4/22/2013 6:51:25 PM
I wonder what it feels like to go to work and feel unappreciated...oh wait that's everyday. shut the fck up buddy imagine if you had to have a real job.
anonymous   posted 4/22/2013 7:27:39 PM
Kickstarter!
anonymous   posted 4/23/2013 8:41:29 AM
I just want this band to break up so Trevers girlfriend dumps him.. So I can start fcking her again
anonymous   posted 4/23/2013 10:47:07 PM
Wah! If nobody buys my albums and my band breaks up, nobody will fck me but my sister...
anonymous   posted 4/23/2013 11:50:28 PM
Years ago I was told by brian himself that the reason zack gibson was kicked out was because "his playing is slop, he's not good enough." What a bunch of horseshit that is. This band is a joke.
anonymous   posted 4/26/2013 11:32:51 AM
Die hard black dahlia fan who plans on downloading illegally AND buying. You guys taking shit make no sense.I agree it was a dumb move oh his part to try and URGE fans to buy the album. But to say they haven't a good album since unhallowed or miasma is far from the truth.Ritual is by far their best album to date; incorporating black metal with their already distuinguished thrash/death sound.I for one will buy the album, just don't like being told to.
anonymous   posted 4/26/2013 9:56:43 PM
if they didn't sell out several years ago and change their style maybe people would feel like buying their albums at least a little bit? he's always had a huge ego and honestly hope that more people continue to download their albums and piss that douchebag off.
anonymous   posted 4/27/2013 5:15:27 AM
If its really about the music then they would have real jobs and dedicate years to each album not release a new CD every year like a madden game, pig destroyer all have real jobs tour hardly at all and put out a CD once every 3-5 years and its always quality
anonymous   posted 5/15/2013 4:57:12 PM
I fcking love TBDM, I've bought all of their albums, but I also downloaded them first...For one reason...I don't pay for shit before trying it out...All you fcks talking shit can come right on over and get a serious Black Dahlia beat down...313 North Jackson, Fort Gibson, OK 74434...I doubt I'll see any of you pussies anytime soon...
anonymous   posted 5/22/2013 5:34:29 AM
wow, all you guys are jerks.
anonymous   posted 6/3/2013 7:10:09 AM
What about punk attitude? There are shitloads of bands who rely on the fan support only, play for food and gas and maybe some extra cash, and are happy to do it anyway.
anonymous   posted 7/28/2013 1:13:30 PM
To the guy who said that merch and ticket sales aren't as important as CD sales, you are completely wrong. Merch and CD sales are the only thing that can keep bands alive on tour. Buy their merch and buy tickets to their shows. Like the singer said, they only get an extremely small fraction of the money from CD sales.
