With a simple yet artsy layout and an equally abstract title ("The Silent Circus"), BTBAM have made a somewhat valiant effort at producing a memorable album. But as with the majority of metal (metalcore) these days, they saw a niche that wasn’t theirs and dove face first into it with no precautions. This is a risky venture and rarely executed in a way that lets the listener feel it was a natural progression, rather than an attempt to emulate another formidable band. Unfortunately for Between The Buried and Me, I'm having a hard time buying it. First things first, I was under the impression that BTBAM were a melodic metal band that fused hardcore and thrash elements into their sound Apparently now they are a grind band that fuses elements of hardcore and progressive metal into their sound, almost a complete departure from their previous material, found on their debut and demo. I must give them credit for this ballsy approach, but it could have been executed a little better. Although the press sheet contains quotes from their members saying that “we are better songwriters,” I beg to differ. The transitions aren’t smooth at all and it makes it very hard to follow along, especially on “Mordecai.” This track sees the band start off grind and end in an almost 80’s Chicago (the band, not the movie) sounding ballad. In between you have traces of trash and an Opeth-style acoustic passage with some very emoish clean vocals. There is a Solefald-esque clean vocal part I liked on the first track, but it’s more of a listen-to-once and skip-over track (as a whole). Did I mention the Every Time I Die clapping part that appears midway through the track Rather annoying. Throughout this band’s three year career, they've never really had a good vocalist. The screaming is not executed properly as there is just not enough power behind it. It sounds like its all from the throat, much like with the singer of Avenged Sevenfold. It’s like nails on a chalk board, not my thing at all. The guitarists are amazing players, but the songwriting isn’t very good, as was told earlier. There is no real beginning, middle or end. It’s a bunch of random parts jumbled together that make for a headache when you try to make sense of it. I’m sure this was the intent. For this reason I would highly recommend skipping over the first three songs on this record and starting with “Mordecai.” Not a personal favorite, but it's more listenable than its predecessors. The strongest transition on the record is from the ambient “reaction,” with subtle clean voice, to the soft rock track “(Shevanel Take 2)” found immediately after. As far fetched as it might sound, this is the best track on the album and it’s the most out of place. There is a huge The Red Chord influence felt on this entire record. I can almost assure you that any grind found on this album wouldn’t have made its way onto this record if it weren’t for them. Much of it is almost too similar for comfort. The best part of this band is the drumming, which is excellent. The blackmetalish blasting fury at the end of “Destructo Spin” is evidence of that. I just can’t get into this band because it all just doesn’t come together smoothly. Bottom Line: Some people are going to hate that I pointed out what they actually thought all along about this band, but were too shy to say aloud for fear their friends might hear (and quickly ostracize them). I’m not dissing these dudes. I just think their time has yet to come. I’m not impressed with what I’ve heard thus far in their three-year career and I hope that things change in the future. There is a lot of talent here and with some good songwriting, they could do wonders.

josh davis_ 8/14/2004 11:23:08 PM

jason is a good drummer. i like him.

retch_ 8/23/2004 3:36:28 PM

5/10? come on now. another great cd by btbam.

justin_ 8/26/2004 1:09:18 AM

5/10 is ridiculous. btbam is the best band on the scene right now, both their full lengths are incredible.

Mr.Fuji_ 9/2/2004 7:22:03 PM

I just shit my pants because this is such a bad review. 5/10? This album is among my favorive among Jane Doe. 10/10 at least.

fuzz_ 9/11/2004 4:12:40 PM

not since skid row released their debut have i heard an album so awesome - 20/10

Zane_ 9/14/2004 1:11:34 PM

Childish comments aside, a 5/10 is flat-out misleading. True, it's not a perfect album, and I agree that some transitions are much less than smooth. But it's just not a 5/10 album - I'd say a 7 would be more objectively realistic, and personally I think it's an 8 or 9.

Craig_ 10/1/2004 11:52:13 AM

Mr. Landers...you are a f'ing idiot. I wish I knew where you lived.

anonymous 10/23/2004 10:15:35 PM

an unfair review of an amazing band... individually and as a group. How many times did you listen to it before you rated?--obviously not enough

lambgoatwbmastersuckedme!_ 11/1/2004 6:21:13 PM

queer ass review. almost as queer as the lambgoat webmaster. should be at least a 6! or 7

Cainam_ 11/26/2004 2:52:26 PM

I don't think this album is worth a 5, but I didn't like it either. S/T is amazing, but TSC doesn't give me a good feeling. I think it's too much focussed on grind. There are too few transitions, it's too straight. S/T is more various and exciting. 7,3

nightmare_ 11/28/2004 1:11:11 PM

"Some people are going to hate that I pointed out what they actually thought all along about this band, but were too shy to say aloud for fear their friends might hear "..................right.........this review is really old now but it still pisses me off. btbam must have done something bad to you and this is your way of getting back to them; otherwise you should have your status as an album reviewed revoked for your idiotic blanket statements. learn to appreciate music, you f*ckgook

Kris_ 12/10/2004 10:20:26 AM

Someone needs to write a better review, this guy is a f*cking idiot.

kneel_ 1/13/2005 11:29:23 PM

oh man, i can't argue with these guys. this shit just rocks! how come you gave it a 5? just to say that they need a little improvement? man, be realistic! anyway, their self- titled release is better..

imametalheadwannafightabo_ 1/16/2005 5:39:16 PM

this is the worst thing iv ever seen. this is a great album and deserves an 11/10. so f*ck you.

me_ 1/22/2005 1:57:11 PM

your an idiot this cd is f*cking awesome.

Teh Ryan_ 2/6/2005 5:47:01 PM

Man, oh man. He listed Shevanel Take 2 as his favorite song on the CD. Gahahaha. It IS a good song, but this is a f*cking metal album, not an acoustic soft rock album. BTBAM is one of the most technical, beautiful bands in the genre right now(along with Opeth \m/)...This guy is a moron. I bet if he played guitar, or any instrument, he would appreciate this album MUCH more.

Demon_ 2/11/2005 11:27:50 AM

Man, this guy is f*cking tool. 5/10? Come on now, that is way to harsh. This band has it all IMO technicalitiy, great vocals (yes they are good), muscianship, and a great sense of songwriting ability. Bad, bad review of a great album.

XxboxX_ 2/16/2005 2:20:05 PM

is this some kind of joke? 5/10. im not going to take any of this guy's reviews seriously anymore. 10/10.

Chris _ 2/21/2005 3:56:09 AM

Jason didn't even drum on this CD... moron. Anyways the people that write reviews on this site suck.

panic to the max_ 2/23/2005 7:37:43 AM

10/10 cd never gets old even after the 1000th time you hear it!

WTF_ 5/8/2005 10:47:31 AM

AHHHH

poo_ 5/19/2005 1:29:14 PM

Whoever reviewed this, are you f*cking retarded? How can you give the self-titled an 8, and then give this a 5? This is at least worthy of a 7. I'm telling you guys, stop listening to shitty old-school hardcore.

TheNoiseComforts_ 5/20/2005 2:03:26 PM

A perfect score for me.

chris_ 5/20/2005 5:29:00 PM

This comment is late but, this review sucks. This guy obviously has no taste for GOOD music what so ever. He is musically retarded and deserves to be shot in the throat for talking like he actually knows about music or hardcore for that matter. He has his opinion, and I have mine. Saying "Shevanel Take 2" is the best track on this album, is basically saying "I don't listen to hardcore and I have no right writing this review on a BTBAM album."

gwarface_ 6/21/2005 6:33:30 PM

my name's graham landers. i write longwinded music reveiws. thinking confuses me. typing hurts my fingers. i cry at night because no one listens to me. i have a short attention span and i was under the impression that i might be a giant hemroid. \listen to the damn record. p.s. every time i die did not invent clapping. they were not the first to incorporate a rock feel into their music. they just shamelessly did it all the time and used it as a gimmick for people to think they had style. i f

micpen_ 6/22/2005 1:07:21 PM

What a dumbass. How can you give this a 5/10. This is an amazing album. Unlike you, I wouldnt call this album and grind album. For you to call this a grind album and then say that "There is no real beginning, middle or end. It’s a bunch of random parts jumbled together that make for a headache when you try to make sense of it" in a negative way is stupid as hell. What the f*ck do you think grind is. Have you ever listened to a grind album. This guy should never be able to write another re

anonymous 9/5/2005 5:14:58 AM

reading this kills me. Graham Landers, PhD in gayry, writes in this tone of voice that he is some super-genius telling us what is right and what is wrong. STFU. and, P.S., no one makes comparisons to Avenged Sevenfold. ew dude.

steve_ 9/7/2005 6:38:09 PM

Needs improvement? YOUR ON CRACK!!!! The transitions are “choppy” on purpose, they make the changes from death metal to softer parts more dramatic. Most good music is like a ROLLER COASTER, it goes from really quite to more climatic parts. It makes songs GOOD. Foo.

unders_core_ 11/25/2005 11:20:25 PM

Graham Landers, you fail it.

seriously_ 12/5/2005 5:35:21 AM

this cd is a 5/10...and this bands live show is sooooooooooooo f*cking boring and terrible, they just stand there. and anyone who says "well they're really tech" try saying that when seeing them on the same bill with dillinger...c'mon

unders_core_ 12/18/2005 4:45:13 PM

I saw them w/ dillinger as well, and I thought btbam was fricken awesome. They pwned.

whatajoke_ 1/19/2006 3:57:38 PM

ridiculous. I've listened to this album religiously for several months and other than Alaska, no album has occupied my cd player, mp3 player, winamp playlist and car cd player at the same time for as long as this one has. the lyrics are f*cking great too... "daydream sex, broken marriage f*ck, you cause this shit." best songs - camilla rhodes, mordecai, ad a dglgmut. 10/10, this guy is a f*cking retard who knows shit of metal.

anonymous 3/3/2006 12:08:45 PM

amazing album go get it, you cant really expect someone named "Graham Landers" to understand this anyway

anonymous 4/20/2006 3:32:40 PM

you have got to be kidding me. This album is a cornerstone for good music.

Pj123_ 6/5/2006 5:35:15 PM

thats funny, 37 comments and only 1 agreed with the review, 10/10

charlieboy_ 6/7/2006 12:42:03 AM

"The best part of this band is the drumming, which is excellent. The blackmetalish blasting fury at the end of “Destructo Spin” is evidence of that." Oh yeahhhh.. a straight blast beat is really hard. My f*ck you are not fit to be reviewing music.

charlieboy_ 6/7/2006 12:44:10 AM

Oh yeah.. I give this album 10/10.

neil_ 7/12/2006 9:16:42 PM

yeah you're a f*cking idiot for reviewin this album. motherf*cker has no taste! shavanel take 2 as the f*cking best song? what the f*ck are you into lately? click five bitch? huh? i hope lambgoat will f*ck you up and fire your bitch ass

Marcus_ 7/15/2006 11:11:42 PM

As much as I dislike this band's music and despise this album (even if I do have it autrographed), I have to admit this is no way to write a review. No chance in hell should this writer have been allowed to review this album. Anyway, this album gets a 2/10 with me. Yeah, call me what you will, but I still respect the band and think every individual musician in the band are easily some of the most talented and innovative in all of the music industry.

xthardingx_ 10/3/2006 4:32:51 PM

are you f*cking serious. lambgoat has the wort reviewers EVER. f*cking douche.

matsumi_ 3/17/2007 10:35:58 AM

this band is soo greeaat!!! wat a f*cking rating!! maybe you should wash your ear with mordecai and jazz attacks!!=]] this is 30/10 =]]

poodock_ 8/16/2007 1:30:36 AM

f*ck you. you f*cking punk ass bitch. this is the best and one of the most important cds to of come out in years. definitly this bands best cd of the 3 thye have.

Catalyst_ 4/30/2008 3:06:14 PM

This album is amazing (with the exception of shevanel take 2....kinda cheesy i think). I've been listening to BTBAM since they came out and The Silent Circus still has some of my favorite songs on it....it's harder than most of their other stuff, which I enjoy. Definitely a harsh review but it's your opinion!

Ian_ 7/4/2008 10:30:30 PM

Transitions suck? What are you talking about? They kick ass! The heavy parts to the melodic parts are awesome. You re out of you mind. This is a terrible website. A disgrace.

Tom_ 9/5/2008 8:38:23 PM

What the hell? this reveiw is all wrong.

CES_ 12/4/2008 6:22:41 AM

Among the worst reviews on LG, should be re-reviewed by someone who knows what they're talking about. The reviewer uses what he thought the band ought to be to contrast with what he thinks they're going for on the record... A complete departure from their earlier material? Did you even listen to it? I mean come on man. This album is incredible, easily a 9/10.

Graham Landers_ 11/18/2010 7:43:56 PM

f*ck off gays. Now I write reviews 4 mTV and make serious ca$h. All thanks to this great review and my excellent resume.

Matt NC_ 1/18/2011 6:58:03 AM

Nobody who deserves to live really watches MTV anyway, not very good bragging rights Graham Landers. As for the review...I will make sure not to read any paltry shit you write again. Your opinion no longer matters, from what I can tell from EVERY comment, to anyone who knows jack shit about music. Find a job you don't suck at, apparently Lambgoat had the right idea and dropped your ass.

Jim_ 2/21/2011 5:44:20 PM

and I make serious ca$h bitchin at shitty writers

anonymous 7/29/2013 1:59:50 PM

10/10.

anonymous 10/23/2014 6:41:12 AM

This guy is an idiot. He, like most of his reviewer colleagues on this site all have the same problem, they all possess the inability to be objective. They spend time ripping apart things that they don't like rather than trying to look at it for what it is. And I'm sorry but the first 2 tracks are what make the album so fu/cking epic. Tommy Rogers vocals' are exactly what this album requires to maintain it's raw power.
