Roughly seven years ago, when I was a freshman in college, the tour booking gods put together a metalcore line-up over which I shit my pants: Every Time I Die, As I Lay Dying, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Scarlet. It was such a one-to-one correlation with the favored albums in my car's CD changer (12 discs, man!) that the eighteen year old me was ecstatic for a week. I still look back upon it favorably; Hot Damn! Remains one of my all-time favorite albums, BDM's "Funeral Thirst" still gets me a little misty-eyed, and with the help of a few beers and some nostalgic prodding, I just might go off on how Scarlet's Cult Classic was, indeed, the exact definition of an underrated cult classic (if the metalcore genre could ever allow such a thing). Of course, this was also the days of Frail Words Collapse, the predictable, but oh-so-catchy metalcore darling of 2003. Even an understanding of melodic death metal and an intense disdain for drum triggers and panic chords isn't enough to get me to renounce eighteen year old me's appreciation for "gems" like "94 Hours" and "Distance Is Darkness." But times change and tastes do too, which leads to my next confession: I had absolutely no idea, until now, what As I Lay Dying's current output sounded like. So if you're searching for a comprehensive overview of the band's discography and a track-by-track comparison to their last record, it looks like you'll need to one of the dozens of other media outlets that will surely provide that material. Instead, I'm going to frame this around my initial reaction to hearing The Powerless Rise, which in order to enforce its bluntness, deserves its own line: There are still bands that sound like this? I am both shocked and amazed that a mixture of borrowed Swedish death metal riffs, breakdowns prefaced by chugging identifiers, and soaring choruses with clean singing and little melodic guitar hooks still exists. And the clicks of the triggered drum sound! It's all fucking identical! Is it still 2003? Here I was expecting a matured sound -- I mean, come on, The Black Dahlia Murder has progressed into being a very impressive technical death metal machine, and even bands like Job For a Cowboy moved past being an embarrassing novelty act to develop into a respectable, albeit a little identity-less, metal act -- but aside from tighter instrumentation and a few decent riffs, As I Lay Dying hasn't changed a single thing. Kudos to the strong musicianship that comes with the professionalism of being a band for this long, but everything else, when viewed through a direct comparison to the record that launched the band's career, is almost sad. This is lowest common denominator stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with the progressive mindset and boundary breaking that is supposed to define the world of extreme music. And don't misread this as a knock against a band for "getting too big" -- that just screams childish. Bottom Line: There are bands that are popular because their vision and end product is more adventurous and unique than any other band. And then there are bands that simply create what's safe and marketable. I'll let you decide which band As I Lay Dying is. If my eighteen year old self only managed to tolerate paint-by-the-numbers metalcore for a short period of time before moving on, I would have thought the same was going to be true for the guys in As I Lay Dying. I was wrong.

IT'S I HOPE WE NEVER PART NOW GET IT RIGHT OR PAY THE PRICE

I won't lie to you, the inner me actually likes this cd. I am sick and tired of needing to get more technical, more progressive, more strings, more tunings. Since when does difference make you interesting? Sure, this isn't an album that has 10 stand alone tracks, but at least I can laugh at the cheesy thrash metal solos. By the way I'm still loving metalcore, f*ck this DJENT era. An artist is someone who masters their art, not who can do 10 things well. As I Lay Dying are Artists in the Metalcor

Chi_Stake_ 5/25/2010 2:17:27 PM

I definitely saw that tour for Scarlet and ETID

HBDad_ 5/25/2010 2:56:02 PM

Their best album since Frail Words Collapse and heaviest album overall but the whiny melodic vocals really drag is down. It really lacks staying power though...

andropause_ 5/25/2010 3:56:19 PM

CD was just aweeeeeeeeful. It seems Tim Lambesis and the rest of the guys like to produce really shitty albums after releasing decent ones. For example, Frail was good, shadows was the worst. Oceans was good, powerless rise was dreadful. The End.

Jamey Lay Dying_ 5/25/2010 3:59:50 PM

You f*cking shithead. You don't know the first thing about paint-by-the-numbers metalcore; we put a lot of time and effort into this CD, and it's one of the heaviest releases of the year. We better not catch you around at any shows, because if my crew sees you, you'll wish you never got out of bed that day. Oh, and to everyone who actually CARES about this record, listen up! Thanks to everybody who bought it already but for those who have not been able to find it, try TARGET, yes TARGET is stock

anaturaldisaster_ 5/25/2010 4:08:13 PM

This review is a f*cking joke. This album doesn't sound much like their old stuff at all. There are barely any breakdowns. The drum sound is polished for sure, but a far cry from the typewriter smacking tissue paper sound of FWC. They have a different clean vocalist. It's much more technical and metal than anything else they've done. Even without hearing their last two records it is clear that their whole songwriting approach has changed. I generally like your reviews, but this is f*cking retard

uhh_ 5/25/2010 4:08:41 PM

Haven't heard it, won't hear it, but absolutely positive it sounds identical to all of their other shit. Boring, boring band.

all of this is the definition of the word gay

Godfather_ 5/25/2010 7:58:56 PM

Just can't get my head round the fact that this band stills exists. People are still defending their shitty bland music in this comment box. Outstanding.

Somewhat Mature_ 5/25/2010 8:45:35 PM

This review is terrible... Grow up, and learn how to review! This cd sounds NOTHING like FWC!!!

xCHOCOLATE_THUNDERx_ 5/25/2010 9:28:05 PM

Yeah gay Learn How to have an opinion. what a douche.

dave_ 5/25/2010 10:29:22 PM

I agree with some of what this reviewer said as I, a 27 year old (this reviewer is probably my age, or maybe around 25)..so yeah, its different listening to music like this now, compared to when I was 17. Then, metalcore was amazing. It was heavy, it was melodic.. its nice to listen to something heavy without being blastbeat to death for 45 minutes. I did sample the record, have no intention of buying it, but all I have to say if they want to release this sort of sound again, go ahead but its

Godfather_ 5/25/2010 10:31:22 PM

Actually, after going back and listening to this, I like it. They have really redeemed themselves. I suggest listening to this.

Godfather_ 5/25/2010 10:35:02 PM

I also suggest sucking a c-ck as well, especially black ones. They're quite delicious.

NoTalentAssclown_ 5/25/2010 11:06:12 PM

hey, a spot on review on Lambgoat?

t_ 5/26/2010 12:14:12 AM

More reviews like this. It was a good move to outright present an authorial voice while at the same time providing a short account of what the album was like. Much better review than the last output.

Godfather_ 5/26/2010 1:32:14 AM

Honest to god, who is the sad bitter gay that feels the need to imitate me on here? It's pathetic.

tt_ 5/26/2010 2:11:22 AM

why the f*ck are you coming back to check the comments on this review, godfather? gay

YOU ARE ALL FAGGOTS_ 5/26/2010 4:30:16 AM

This band has always sucked and will always suck. They were using hair straighteners on tour for their first record = losers. If you ask yourself "What does using hair straighteners have to do with making good music?" then get the f*ck over yourself. Their approach is solely focused on generating a watered down generic product. f*ck everybody.

Metalcore4eva_ 5/26/2010 8:14:04 AM

This cd is great and has amazing musicianship on it! Sounds like this reviewer has big metalcore issues, and is too cool for school...

eatingbigdicks_ 5/26/2010 8:33:20 AM

if this album came out on deathwish he would have given it an 8/10

Philip_ 5/26/2010 9:34:15 AM

'The Only Constant Is Change'...and As I Lay Dying albums.

elliot_ 5/26/2010 10:53:47 AM

This band makes so much money doing what they do, it's astounding. I can't blame them for staying on the same track.

dicks_ 5/26/2010 11:54:22 AM

the only thing these reviews are anymore is troll fodder

fukuimdrunk_ 5/26/2010 12:08:25 PM

LOL@ jamey.

Snigglepiper_ 5/26/2010 2:02:36 PM

It's just nice to see a review that isn't 8/10.

typicallambgoatposter_ 5/26/2010 5:32:56 PM

time and time again you poor excuses for humans wasting your time and mine by commenting on something you dont even like...i dont get it???? if you hate it that much dont pay attention to it

anonymous 5/26/2010 5:52:57 PM

So, in an album review, you spend a good three paragraphs discussing your mediocre music tastes, and then justify it by saying that you still kind of like it. You then throw out metalcore buzz words like 'Swedish' and 'triggers' while still transparently defending your shit taste in music. Stop looking for those blanket statement identifiers and write something beyond an incoherent explanation of an albums precedence.

mydadfucksme_ 5/26/2010 7:34:36 PM

this wasnt a review. i dont care for AILD but at least do your f*cking job.

fuckyourband_ 5/27/2010 10:07:34 AM

lol @ jamey. its his opinion what he reviewed. anyways, i agree with how metalcore was the shit back in 03 as a freshman in college. i am the same way (25 years old). i havent heard this album nor any album (for more than 5 mins) from as i lay dying since FWC. my musical taste has changed. but i do feel that this review was just awful. it felt more like an attack on aild rather than an actual review on the album. but whatever

Aenon_ 5/27/2010 12:52:02 PM

album isnt that bad..i believe its better than the last..considering theres no Metallica rip offs..my only prob is the vocal tracks....theres too many...7/10

People in this band coming to this site to get pissed off about words on a screen. Holy f*ck.

anonymous 5/27/2010 5:43:47 PM

i was at that scarlet show, i was about 15, it was f*cking awesome

XpghX_ 5/27/2010 8:45:25 PM

at least jacob bannons artwork is cool.

james_ 5/28/2010 12:58:50 AM

"People in this band coming to this site to get pissed off about words on a screen. Holy f*ck. posted by Chansey () on 5/27/2010 5:06:51 PM" dog that is a copy/paste joke that's been running on here for years now. it changes with every band.

xaeonsx_ 5/28/2010 1:07:59 AM

cd is actually enjoyable. not my style though. not great, not terrible. definitely not worth all the pissing and moaning here.

Chansey_ 5/28/2010 1:20:49 AM

A) I was just called "dog" and B) I wasn't even aware that Lambgoat reviews had a comment section in the first place.

xmusicislifex_ 5/28/2010 3:56:19 PM

didn't like the album but not about to bash them...they have put out some solid stuff over the years and they are tight live...most bands, especially some of the posters on here, won't accomplish half of what AILD has PERIOD

fuckingfight_ 5/28/2010 4:09:05 PM

this album is definitely a step backward. the song "within destruction" showed some awesome promise, but then kind of just feel back on their heels and released 'frail words collapse' again. it's okay.

Godfather_ 5/28/2010 5:53:40 PM

It's true. Spot on, chap. Spot on.

minusmyself_ 5/28/2010 10:39:02 PM

i was totally the same about that tour he talks about, now i dont give a f*ck about any of those bands...sad but great we're all evolving and realizing these bands should too for f*ck sakes

thereapersson_ 6/1/2010 6:22:59 AM

Best string of review comments in quite a while. You gays have all outdone yourselves this time...

lambtard_ 6/1/2010 7:49:48 AM

as i lay dying continues to produce awesome riffs and their talent at their instruments out performs most others in metalcore. please stop having retards who are sick of metalcore review albums. this album is brutal and there is never a dull moment. best album of the year so far and i highly recommend it. lambgoat keeps getting worse and worse with their reviews and comments. i may refrain from coming back to this shit of a site.

xMrRocknRollx_ 6/1/2010 5:27:24 PM

I'm not the end all for music knowledge or criticism but fact is this is a good album... so many people cry when a band turns soft or "sells out" or whatever you wanna call it, yet now finally a band sticks to its roots, and because of that, people are hating on it? Give me a break. Clearly this music genre isn't for everyone, and that's okay, but to hate on it is absurd, and considering it takes a particular ear to love this style, they should get a simple 10 outta 10 for continuing to produc

Godfather_ 6/1/2010 11:24:57 PM

All hail

badaxe_ 6/2/2010 11:26:45 AM

This band is terrible; always has been, always will be. However, the fact that LG is letting 18 year olds do reviews is very off-putting.

döner_ 6/2/2010 5:32:41 PM

I love big steaming piles of c-ck

Keith_ 6/5/2010 10:55:01 PM

i have to say..its a decent album. but it deserves a 4/10. going back to An Ocean Between Us...that was their best of work. AOBU was a flawless f*cking album. Your money is best spent on that album instead...worth the cash to...youll definately want a hard copy of that album.

Godfather_ 6/6/2010 3:47:34 PM

Only one race

Godfather_ 6/8/2010 6:16:52 AM

Keith, Stop jerking off all over the album and pleasure on me instead

2Stepper_ 6/9/2010 11:39:59 AM

I guess my main concern that wasn't addressed in this review is whether or not you can still mosh to this band or not. I remember their pits back in the day. I still have bruises.

sowhat_ 6/17/2010 1:55:46 AM

because one grows tired of a genre does not mean that nobody should listen to it.

lmfao_ 6/20/2010 6:28:19 PM

llllll this band sucks iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilol

Travis Aker_ 6/20/2010 10:19:29 PM

This is a really good album and deserves better than a 4 out of 10 maybe some motherf*ckers need to get there heads out of straight edge and join the real f*cking world for a change.

suetonius_ 6/21/2010 11:57:07 PM

album is boring but i guess people like it. the band must have god on their side

thedemonstration_ 6/22/2010 10:37:49 AM

i agree with a lot but still just cant bring myself to dislike them.

brianhulud_ 6/28/2010 7:22:34 PM

hell yeah I went to that tour back then too...all of those bands should f*ckin die now though

Mattress_ 6/30/2010 9:50:52 PM

Im sorry but you are f*ckin stupid for sayin this album sounds like all the other ones As i lay dying has definitely progressively gotten more talented as the years have passed and i must say this their HEAVIEST album they have put it its much less metalcore and more hardcore deathmetal if you like As I Lay Dying you will love this album

Jordan_ 7/1/2010 11:09:52 PM

i like how the dude from the band can't take negative criticism. i hate to break it to you but you are the worst metalcore and possibly the worst band ever. you have never been good. you are so generic and boring. you are nothing compared to Parkway Drive, August Burns Red, and I Killed The Prom Queen. all of your fans are 12 and have no idea what real hardcore is. As I Lay Dying f*cking sucks balls. f*ck as i lay dying. i have heard unsigned bands that are 10000X better than as i lay dying.

smearCampaign_ 7/24/2010 6:00:36 PM

That review is spot on. The comparisons with ETID and TBDM are great. Both those bands progressed and moved forward and are still fantastic. AILD is a joke Hot Topic band now.

Jeff Wood_ 9/1/2010 3:33:19 PM

Honestly its sad that people like this are reviewing albums. If you can't even realize that AILD has changed their sound since FWC then clearly your deaf of just retarded. Its hard enough to find any good Metalcore bands today anyways, let alone a band like AILD who have managed to sustain a place above all the trend bands that are surfacing. This is def. one of the best albums of the year so far just because they have defined their own sound

hatahs_ 5/18/2011 11:45:40 AM

AILD is bad metalcore? Whats good then reviewer?

anonymous 5/26/2012 8:48:43 AM

People all over the world receive the mortgage loans in various banks, just because that is fast and easy.
