After a strong Translation Loss debut in 2007, Massachusetts' Irepress is back with Sol Eye Sea I, another offering with an equally perplexing title for fans of instrumental metal and post-rock. From an objective standpoint, the band hasn't significantly modified their musical foundation, as staccato bass lines, warm tremolo guitar melodies, and off-time, jarring metalcore riffs still anchor the band's songwriting approach. The addition of a keyboardist and a sprinkling of vocals give Sol Eye Sea I a few extra dimensions to work with, but overall, it's not a far cry from Samus Octology. But that's not a bad thing at all. Irepress has crafted a fairly unique sound within the instrumental world, and it would a shame if they suddenly ditched it on only their second proper release. "Cyette Phiur" is the album's centerpiece and standout track, thriving on a blend of female vocals, colorful guitar lines, and a healthy helping of abrasive, hardcore chugging in the song's midsection. "Adelugé" also succeeds by refusing to shy away from heavier elements, frequently relying on Misery Signals/7 Angels 7 Plagues-esque breakdowns to provide dynamic swells. And "Entanglement" has an early showcase of catchy start-and-stop rhythms held together by memorable drumming before it fluidly progresses into an electronics-tinged passage and additional bouts of metallic riffing. Sol Eye Sea I definitely has enough of the band's brand of rhythmically engaging instrumental songwriting to be a worthy successor to Samus Octology. However, Irepress' infrequent inclusion of vocals feels like a missed opportunity. The vocals, ranging from gang shouting to screams to a weird attempt at a falsetto in "Barrageo," occur too rarely to justify their wide range. If the vocals had a larger role in the record, the different styles would have been acceptable. Or if they had merely stuck with one style in small quantities, it would have made more sense. But in their current dose, the vocals feel like they were by far the final step in the songwriting process, and their inconsistency prevents them from meshing with the rest of the band's elements. Is it enough to wreck Sol Eye Sea I Absolutely not. But it does suggest that a small but carefully calculated dose of a strong vocalist is the missing piece of Irepress' puzzle. Bottom Line: Sol Eye Sea I is an easy sell for fans of instrumental rock and metal. Irepress continues to impress with a blend of off-time melodies, innovative song structures, and metalcore outbursts, but they inadvertently showed a weakness by fumbling the vocals. It might be a small complaint, but it's the one main factor between this album and complete praise.

Solid release. Guitars are actually in tune this record too.

Great album, Nick was right on the money. Minus the few vocal missteps, this def. holds up to Samus Octology. Somebody tell me again why people give a crap about Emmure but not this band?

Its mindblowing to me how band like these guys, Junius ect can come and go unnoticed while other bands with not even a percent of the creative power of the before mentioned. Crimes against humanity.

I saw them with this other band called battlefields. Thanks to the terrible live show of battlefields, irepress shined. How did battlefields get on a tour with a good band like this? I personally think that they are the worst band ive ever seen live. Irepress made them look like little kids.
