Basic economic theory revolves around the principle of supply and demand. Such a principle has obvious applications in the music business, but I can't quite wrap my head around the case of Georgia's A Girl A Gun A Ghost. The fact that we're still seeing bands pop up in the genre of southern rock influenced metalcore can only mean one thing: kids are still buying it. But even if this demand still exists, do we really need another act to talk about in the same sentences as Every Time I Die, He Is Legend, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, Cancer Bats, and the like It's unfair to write off a band just for merely occupying the same genre, but the answer is no. Is AGAGAG supposed to abandon its style completely and hop on the next genre train Absolutely not. But let's remember that in the age of the Internet and increased listener exposure to new music, bands must put their own distinctive touches on a style in order to stand out amongst their peers. AGAGAG's Through the Eyes of Ahab might be competent and moderately catchy, but that's not going to cut it. There are countless bands out there capable of that, and if a band wants to exist for longer than a record or two, the members need to arm themselves with a competitive advantage. So, if these members are listening, here are a few suggestions to consider: 1. Stop aping Every Time I Die's riffs. It is a safe assumption that the targeted demographic for Through the Eyes of Ahab has already been properly introduced to ETID, so why rehash Through the Eyes of Ahab has an abundance of examples, but put "Street Rat's Eyes" back to back with Gutter Phenomenon's "Bored Stiff" and the similarities are painfully obvious. 2. Cut down the length of your record. A 55 minute record doesn't lend itself well to a band with little song variation. So either mix things up in that department (see bullet no. 4), or slim things down. In small doses, tracks like "Lizard in the Lights" and "Spider Inside Her" can be enjoyable, but nearing the end of the album, similar tracks fall victim to complete monotony. 3. Reduce the number of breakdowns. Yes, everyone is aware that metalcore relies heavily upon the breakdown, but tracks like "Beware the Tales of Scorpion" hit rock bottom as they enter stagnant, overdone breakdowns. Scale back the quantity (it's okay to still have a few) and it will make the breakdowns feel bigger when they do appear. Trust me. 4. Experiment a little more with song structures. Not every track has to cycle through the same exact parts (slow southern rock licks to faster melodic parts to giant breakdowns and so on). Even though "The Ivory Tusk..." was only a short instrumental interlude, it stood out because it used warm, melodic guitar lines and a fairly engaging climax. And the closer, "The Fox Is Restless (The Lamb Is Found)," ended the record on a high note with the repetition of the vocal line "We are all just miserable / We are all just machines" amongst a sparse piano melody and other dynamic instrumentation. Evenly blending such songwriting elements with the standard structures might just make for a more interesting release. Metalcore doesn't have to be dead, but at this stage of the game, bands must make the extra effort to distance themselves from the pack. If they don't, the result will just be yet another Through the Eyes of Ahab. Bottom Line: A Girl A Gun A Ghost's Through the Eyes of Ahab is the epitome of a "competent but predictable" release. It's hard to completely dismiss the effort, but it doesn't have nearly enough unique touches to warrant attention from anyone other than listeners who are content with another rehashed Every Time I Die record.

It's good to actually see some constructive criticism in a review like this for a change. Metalcore has grown so stale that even the reviews are all starting to sound the same. Haha, nice work!
