Architect's debut album, All Is Not Lost, set the bar high in early 2007 by delivering an unbelievably gritty blend of musical ideas from the likes of Coalesce and Premonitions of War. The result was one hell of an intense metalcore record, fine-tuned in the careful art of organized chaos. Fast forward to 2009 and the Syracuse, NY band is still running on all of All Is Not Lost's high octane (topical political pun intended) ingredients for their sophomore full-length, Ghost of the Saltwater Machines. And the verdict is quite simple. If Architect's first record got you riled up, there's little chance that this record's offering of the expected thundering drumming, feedbacking guitars, and vicious vocal lines won't do the same. The opening track, "Camelot in Smithereens," hints at a new direction as it starts with warm delays and slightly melodic guitar lines, but soon locks into a crushing metallic groove along side the commanding screams of "Your rhetoric won't bring our sons back from the dead / Your choice of words won't change what you've said." It's early in the record, but this transition is one of the most powerful moments on Ghost of the Saltwater Machines and is reminiscent of the melodic qualities of All Is Not Lost's closer, "The Giving Tree," all while staying true to the band's brand of noisy heaviness. "Uninventing the Wheel" succeeds via a fantastically sludgy opening riff (noticeably borrowed from Crowbar's playbook, but hey, there's nothing wrong with that). And "Death and Taxes" kicks ass as it repeatedly bludgeons with massive one string riffs and just enough rhythmic experimentation to keep things interesting. But unlike All Is Not Lost, Ghost of the Saltwater Machines feels a bit forced at moments. The band's far left wing political lyrics have always carried the ability to be rather polarizing, as they can easily come off as clichéd and preachy. Yet it's not this record's political content that is unsettling, but rather the hardcore clichés in tracks like "The Dog and Pony Show" ("Turn down the lights, turn up the amps / It's time to raise hell, it's time to dance") and "Lamplighter" ("We face these trials one day at a time / I move this mountain one stone at a time") that miss the mark. And lyrics aren't the only thing that fall into the forced category. A few of the album's larger breakdowns, namely those of "I Am Become Death" and "Lamplighter," suffer from being uneventful and choppy, hindering each respective track's overall momentum. Bottom Line: Architect's brand of noisy, abrasive metalcore is still alive and well on their second full-length, Ghost of the Saltwater Machines. A few stale lyrical topics and some forced breakdowns prevent this record from achieving the complete success of their debut, but there's still plenty of pissed off, feedback-laden heaviness to make it worthwhile.

Nick called them leftists. I am slightly offended for them.. They are anything but leftists. Call them conspiracy theorists, or 911-truthers.. but not leftists. He must not pay too close attention to what they talk about haha... As far as the record goes.. I agree with this review. I was a big fan of their first & think the political plundering couldn't be more appropriate than right now. Some of the cliche stuff did rub me the wrong way... especially since I had grown to love this band,

Exactly how I feel about this record. Especially the part about the lyrics. Why do they have a song about the tour life when they're hardly on tour? Despite that. Still so heavy, still so pissed off sounding.

This album's been out less than a week and it's already reviewed? Why can't Lambgoat be that on point with every release? Regardless... Great album but not as good as All is Not Lost. Too much hardcore snuck in on this one for my tastes. 7/10 sounds accurate.

I can't agree more with this review compared to All is Not Lost. All the best tracks are the ones Ant plays on. If it was up to me only 5 songs would be on this record. You can clearly hear two different drummers. Especially with hitting styles. To me this band was at there best when Ant was a full time member and they were just a vicious power house. No offense to Dan. But there is just something about a guy jumping on top of his drum set screaming at you that is just way more intimidating than

thiswasforus_ 12/6/2008 3:03:46 PM

Duder nailed it. Lambgoat should hire him.

I love this album, and not just because i'm from Syracuse. This is much better than the last one IMO. I got bored with the last one fast and this one holds my interest until the end.

Duder, you are an idiot. You say the record should only be 5 songs because theyre the ones Ant played on yet theres only 4 songs on the the actual record that got released that he played on. There is no was to be able to tell who plays on what songs unless you were actually there in the studio watching it be record. Most of us in the band dont even know 100% who did what.
