With all the privileges that come with being one of the most successful "deathcore" bands in the world, there have also got to be many challenges. Especially once that oh-so-crucial third record cycle comes around. In such a new metal subgenre, we haven't really seen any bands get to the point in their career where, after a couple records perfecting a certain sound, they branch out musically in an attempt to form their own identity. All Shall Perish are most definitely doing exactly this on Awaking The Dreamers. I can practically see into the past, back to the band's first writing session for this record. After two well-received records and like, a bajillion shows around the world (where they were probably exposed to over a thousand opening bands trying to sound just like them), they, like anyone would, wrote some tunes that sounded fresh and exciting to them. What we, the listeners, get as a result is a record full of new sounds (for an All Shall Perish record, at least) like clean, melodic vocals, epic guitar solos, and "experimental" tracks like "Memories Of A Glass Sanctuary." I can't say I am impressed by any of these new elements of the band's sound, but only because I, and everyone else, have unfortunately heard it done better. That isn't to say that the execution isn't perfect. All Shall Perish have always come across as one of this subgenre's most technically proficient bands. Guitarists Ben Orum and, especially, Chris Storey shred all over this fucking thing, and pretty much lay to waste any other guitarists in this scene. Drummer Matt Kuykendall shines through while adding colorful cymbal and double-kick work that complements the riffs well. Hernan Hermida's clean vocals actually sound fine, and are not as cringe-worthy as you might expect. I just think that if he needs an outlet for clean singing, he should do it in another band. His brutal vocals, on the other hand. are excellent as usual. In fact, aside from three or four songs, this is still a brutal assault of death metal riffs, blast beats, and genuinely groovy breakdowns. And like their records before it, Awaken The Dreamers has a competent sense of songwriting and dynamics. My only suggestion for next time – stick to what you're good at, because that's, well, what you are in fact good at. Bottom Line: This is still a good record, and considering the band's above-par musicianship and knack for catchy grooves, I predict that with this record, All Shall Perish will make the jump from being part of a musical trend to being relevant to the metal scene in general.

This album is terrible and nowhere near worthy of even a 7. As soon as I heard power metal vocals I checked out.

not too bad of an album... generic but still alright.

arty_mcfarty_ 11/23/2008 9:03:32 AM

this review is TERRIBLE and makes absolutely no sense. Why would you trash an album and then give it a 7. Why are clean vocals EVER a good thing and why would you ever give this band a 7? Never thought I'd say this, but I miss Cory

I haven't heard this cd yet. I liked the first two. All I have to say is that this review was indeed terrible. Brutal vocals.

Take a class on English and proofreading before you review. It might save you from looking like a shit stain on this website.

al_czervik_ 11/24/2008 9:34:20 PM

"we appease scene gays"- lambgoat

anonymous 11/24/2008 10:35:30 PM

this record blows. boring as hell. anybody who says otherwise tows traincars of gayry using a tampon string thats tied to their bloody, stuff-soaked ovaries.

_atab_joey_bishop__ 11/25/2008 8:24:07 AM

"have unfortunately heard it done better. That isn't to say that the execution isn't perfect." = do you even understand english? that makes no f*cking sense. You suck.

' "have unfortunately heard it done better. That isn't to say that the execution isn't perfect." = do you even understand english? that makes no f*cking sense. You suck.' He's talking about their ability to play what they wrote. Your riffs can be of lesser quality than another band's, but you can still execute your riffs perfectly.

anonymous 11/25/2008 8:09:36 PM

THE PRICE OF EXISTENCE IS A MILLION TIMES BETTER THAN THIS CD. THIS CD BLOWS

Matt K. didnt get enough credit here (him being one of the best drummers in the genre) but I agree with the review. ASP have a problem with writing songs that go nowhere ie starting out awesome and ending flat, that needs improvement. Next record perhaps..

thalassa_ 11/30/2008 3:20:29 AM

glad to see most everyone else is figuring out how bad this guy is at writing reviews. I don't expect LG to be the brightest crayon in the box, but jesus, do they get money from the state or something for allowing you to work for them? please, do yourself a favor, go back to school....

You f*cking shithead. You don't know the first thing about brutal vocalscore; we put a lot of time and effort into this CD, and it's one of the heaviest releases of the year. We better not catch you around at any shows, because if my crew sees you, you'll wish you never got out of bed that day. Oh, and to everyone who actually CARES about this record, listen up! Thanks to everybody who bought it already but for those who have not been able to find it, try TARGET, yes TARGET is stocking it for ON
