Fear Before the March of Flames has had a unique ride over the last few years. Calling their jumps from the teenage metalcore of Odd How People Shake to the Botch-isms of Art Damage to the slightly more promising Radiohead mentalities provided by The Always Open Mouth discontinuous would be a bit of an understatement. For all intents and purposes, it's been three separate bands with three completely different songwriting goals. And in keeping up with this sporadic style, Fear Before the March of Flames has made yet another jump for their fourth full-length, truncating their name to Fear Before in the process. As they strive to reinvent themselves once again, this self-titled record has the band mimicking Mars Volta-type artists and attempting to carve out a slice of the "progressive" genre. But let's digress a bit and get something out on the table right now. I'm a math kind of a guy. I like my equations and I like my statistics, so I can't help crunching a few numbers related to this reviewing "gig." I've written around 150 reviews for this site. I typically receive far more records than I can review - I'd estimate that for every written review I've got 3 or 4 CDs that go uncovered. So let's use a nice round number and say that I've received about 600 albums over the past few years. This number is absolutely necessary to stress the magnitude of the following statement: This record has by far the worst vocals of any CD that has ever been sent to me. I can't even think of a second place. Fear Before is hands down the owner of the top spot. I applaud anyone who can make it through this record without sawing their ears off with a rusty butter knife. The confusing part is that from an instrumentation point of view, Fear Before actually does have some notable things going for them. They've certainly borrowed a number of tricks from The Mars Volta, including some oddly catchy layered guitar work and semi-inventive rhythmic backbones, and there are even a few nods to the "classical" era of progressive rock (a Rush or Yes reference would suffice). But every single fucking song is absolutely destroyed by the vocal presence. The opening track, "Treeman," leaps back and forth between borderline nu-metal chanting, whiny screeching, and singing that would be right at home alongside wannabe theatre majors. It's not just annoying; it's dreadful. The stripped down beginning of "Jabberwocky" features a messy duet between two equally irritating vocal styles - neither the atonal lows or the grating highs should have been allowed so much exposure, much less both getting the spotlight. "Get Your Life Together" offers the disc's heaviest moments, but chokes due to the fact that the band can't maintain a single vocal style for more than twenty seconds. Screams, shrieking back-up vocals, and odd speaking parts are all overlapped in a muddled frenzy. Did every member of the band contribute their own "unique" vocals without consulting the others Was it actually supposed to turn out like this The inconsistency and overall poor execution of Fear Before's vocals make this disc unbelievably difficult to enjoy. The Always Open Mouth suffered from this same problem, but hindsight would argue that, in comparison, it was a focused masterpiece in the vocals department. Fear Before has never been a vocally impressive band, but how they managed to plummet this far into the abyss is truly mind-boggling. But thankfully they've armed themselves with cheeky song titles like "Fear Before Doesn't Listen to People Who Don't Like Them" and "Review Our Lives" to deflect the inevitable criticisms. Here's a better idea for thwarting critics: just learn how to sing. Bottom Line: 2006's The Always Open Mouth displayed a lot of promise for Fear Before, but it still suffered from lackluster vocals. Two years later, the band has produced a record amplifying every past vocal mistake to the point where the entire album is just about unlistenable. Putting out unique CDs is commendable, and drawing upon The Mars Volta for some influence allowed this record to possess some potential, but the vocals are just too wretched for this to deserve any praise.

band has always been absolutely terrible. they hop so many trends it makes hot topic look out dated. funny, they'd finally decide to trim their name. i guess overly long band names aren't the trend anymore. get f*cked!!

hxcobd_ 10/27/2008 2:04:48 PM

LOL! Seriously, f*ck everything this band has put out after Art Damage. Get back on track, you f*cking idiots.

themoustachemassacre_ 10/27/2008 2:08:23 PM

Terrible shit band. Go back to playing pop-punk.

Michael_ 10/27/2008 2:08:31 PM

this review is terrible. if anyone likes music for what it is and liked old fear before records, you will love this record. this is one of my favorite releases so far this year

HB_Dad_ 10/27/2008 2:10:40 PM

I've bought every CD these guys put out as they were released and I must say it wasn't until their last CD "Always The Open Mouth" that I was blown away! That album was similar to the more experimental tracks on the first Scarlet full-length. This new album though different takes things further. I love this CD, but my only complain is it FEELS short even though it is 37 minutes long. i guess time does fly when you are having fun! I will agree with Nick's review to a degree that the vocals are

ipaintmycrimes_ 10/27/2008 2:42:44 PM

i really enjoy track 3 and 4 alot, but the rest is pretty bad. it sucks because art damage and the always open mouth are pretty solid albums, even though the band members themselves seem like huge douchebags.

henrock_ 10/27/2008 3:26:35 PM

won't even bother reading this review, f*ck this band

chloe_ 10/27/2008 3:52:44 PM

remember not enough gold

Tom Tomorrow_ 10/27/2008 4:07:32 PM

Terrible review, but what's to be expected from a group of goats that think Aaron Turner's vocals are good

chefsam_ 10/27/2008 4:22:59 PM

great album. shit review. if the vocals aren't your thing that's fine. don't trash a band for experimenting with the vocals and making great songs in the process.

anonymous 10/27/2008 5:32:26 PM

Backed. Well said Nick.

aidz_ 10/27/2008 6:43:54 PM

been a fan since debut album, but this shit is wack.

xnotsoedgex_ 10/27/2008 7:02:11 PM

this review brought the laughs...

anonymous 10/27/2008 7:27:28 PM

terrible review. get f*cked

Dalton_ 10/27/2008 7:36:16 PM

I live in Colorado and have never understood the appeal of this shit band. Great review, Nick!

SmokeOutLoud_ 10/27/2008 8:00:16 PM

uh nick. they say in their clever song title that they don't listen to you. somehow, they still LOSE tho. f*ck this band.

elliot_ 10/27/2008 8:03:58 PM

Always Open Mouth was enough of a head-scratcher, but only two songs into this album, I can already tell that Nick's review was spot on. The vocals in "Treeman?" f*cking ridiculous. It has to be a joke. There's no way this band is completely changing what they do on every album without there being some kind of goofy statement about it. Problem is, that statement sucks, and so does Fear Before.

Art Damage Sucked too_ 10/27/2008 8:07:59 PM

Seriously, this band has always sucked c-ck. They amplify the rampant gayry that represents the CO tight-pants 5280 bitch-core scene. Stupid tricks make bad music, ruin shows trying to be tough, SUCK at being tough... EVERYTHING. Screw Fear Before, Art Damage CD release show sucked too. There was no "golden days" for this band.

YOU ALL FAIL_ 10/27/2008 9:08:28 PM

Zach Fear_ 10/27/2008 9:33:13 PM

Cool guys, real mature. Just bash us.. its cool. p.s. Nick. you're a gay, fight us at a show. I dare you.

haterofmosh_ 10/27/2008 9:45:09 PM

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ no way thats real right?

anonymous 10/27/2008 10:33:39 PM

amazing album like everything else theyve put out. its different and its good. you wont like it. but i do. alot. so who cares.

fartfignugen_ 10/27/2008 10:54:34 PM

i never gave a f*ck about this band until The Always Open Mouth came out. at first i really didnt care for the vocals on that album eaither. but they grew on me and i ended up really enjoying them. im sure i'll still like this album too. i'll definitly go out and buy it.

dreudamn_ 10/28/2008 12:06:03 AM

best album they've made. eat my ass.

Watson_ 10/28/2008 12:43:28 AM

Hole yourself up with your black metal records you c-ck sneeze.

Bensy_ 10/28/2008 12:56:46 AM

Fear Before I Download This Shitty CD

Dick_ 10/28/2008 5:53:51 AM

"I've written around 150 reviews for this site." And they were all shit reviews. good job gay.

Dave2112_ 10/28/2008 6:18:17 AM

I think anybody that would even joke to somebody to eat their ass is at least 65% homosexual. I dont think theres anything less manly, with the exception to wearing a dress and sucking c-ck, then getting your ass played with.

Godfather_ 10/28/2008 8:31:44 AM

^ lol This band is complete dogshit if they were a sandwich it would be an HIV sandwich. Good review.

anonymous 10/28/2008 9:34:55 AM

Sounds like a worse version of the new Cynic.

Jon_ 10/28/2008 10:41:46 AM

Brett__ 10/28/2008 1:14:03 PM

So, are the vocals worse than Brother's Keeper? That's my ultimate bench mark. I guess I'll have to D/L one or two songs later to judge for myself.

behran_ 10/28/2008 4:56:25 PM

I just listened to a track up on their myspace because of this. What the hell...they actually attempted to lift a Mew vocal part.

Adam Fear_ 10/28/2008 5:40:54 PM

f*ck you, Nick. And f*ck all the haters on here who don't like us. We don't care. We've got better shit to do like come on Lambgoat and make fun of people on a website! Fear Before rules.

anonymous 10/28/2008 6:24:23 PM

bullshit review...but that's to be expected from Nick. what a gay

Greggles_ 10/28/2008 8:16:39 PM

I assume Nick never got any Emmure sent to him? Such soggy lettuce. The vocals on this album aren't nearly as bad as he says, even tho' they are kind of chodelicious.

tombradysweiner_ 10/28/2008 8:32:11 PM

okay, i've seen alot of bad reviews on lambgoat before, but this one is awful. this album hits that spot for me in so many ways. when i first got the leak the only thing that bothered me were some pathetic lyrics, and this jackass didnt even mention that. not the best vocalists, but they are different, they arent doing vocals like anyone else. any fbtmof fan that dismisses this album now is going to here it a year from now and correct themselves. wait til midnight, smoke a blunt, put on headphon

36 flip fan_ 10/28/2008 9:17:44 PM

36 flip! 36 flip!

anonymous 10/28/2008 9:49:28 PM

i don't know this cd deserves way more than a 3/10

poop_ 10/28/2008 9:49:58 PM

if young widows put out this exact cd it would be a 10/10

Michael_ 10/29/2008 12:14:22 AM

The vocals in "Treeman" are much like the vocals Mike Patton has done in a variety of musical outlets including that Dillinger EP and I do not think that anyone would bash him or disagree with his effect on other vocalists including Greg for DEP who's vocals on the "Miss Machine" album were highly praised....I think the review was harsh and there was no review really Nick just doesn't like the bands vocals so he put forth no effort to make any intelligent musical statements besides comparing the

Michael _ 10/29/2008 12:20:54 AM

I think that alot of people are missing what this band is trying to do which is to step out of the box get away from the "hardcore" label that they have been handed.....Their live show is great The Always open Mouth love it or hate it, shows great musicianship throughout and in my opinion this album took balls to release they changed their name and experimented more with their sound better than alot of sorry ass shit that floods the market now

mister cyde_ 10/29/2008 4:10:37 AM

this album is f*cking cool. sorry it dosent bring the mosh nicky f*ck yo life

james_ 10/29/2008 2:09:46 PM

i haven't heard this but i may check it out. i was a little disappointed at the name change and the stupid justification for it, but the fact that nick is a gay makes me think i'll like it. art damage is the shit btw

anonymous 10/29/2008 8:13:40 PM

if a band keeps making the same type of record over and over, wheres the art of creativity?

skinnyskinny_ 10/30/2008 3:40:55 AM

"I'm a math kind of a guy. I like my equations and I like my statistics..." I've never ment "no care ever" so much in my life.

skinnyfists_ 10/30/2008 1:42:27 PM

Shit review. Amazing album.

anonymous 10/30/2008 8:37:36 PM

agree with the reviewer, this band is a f*cking joke. the kids that like this shit are the ones i need to stop, take a breath, and just shake my head for. too bad this got reviewed instead of something a little bit better

6RemEmber1Me0_ 10/30/2008 9:28:20 PM

this bitch gave btbam's colors a 5 or some shit...just quit. no appreciation for good musicianship. probably on your knees for liferuiner...

dreudamn_ 10/31/2008 4:10:43 AM

nick just knows that fear before is broship. and broship knows that nick is pretty much a terd. xo dD.

Matt_ 10/31/2008 6:39:09 AM

FAIL. Anyone who compares The Mars Volta and Fear Before and think they sound anywhere near similar (instrumental wise) is a f*cking dumbass. And to everyone else hating on Fear Before- QQ more you pussies. Not every band is going to match your "I slit my wrist" or "I like metal and only metal because I think it makes me cool" lifestyle. Yes, there is different music that is ACTUALLY good.

anonymous 10/31/2008 11:13:52 AM

in all honesty, this is the worst review ever written.

anonymous 10/31/2008 11:53:16 AM

well as long as it's "in all honesty." oh man, i love reading the fanboy comments.

anonymous 11/3/2008 11:31:11 PM

Terrible f*cking album downloaded it and couldn't get past the first song and I liked Always Open Mouth, f*ck these trend jumpers.

fuck fear before flamers_ 11/4/2008 12:36:00 PM

I've never seen band members come onto a message board and talk shit to the person reviewing them. It's too bad you don't have to have any credentials to make music. The fact is, this band was signed by ev to make money. They had cute haircuts and a popular (yet shittily done) sound. I wonder how many of their fanboys on this site listened to the bands fear before is trying to rip off. There is nothing original about this shit, it's scenester gays trying to stay hip and jumping on to every

anonymous 11/5/2008 1:13:26 AM

bad review. this cd is f*cking awesome. even if you don't like it this cd does not deserve a 3, and does not have the worst vocals out of the cds you have reviewed.

Michael_ 11/5/2008 3:08:33 PM

I hope that guys doesn't think that fear before were actually signed to Equal Vision or ev as he calls it (because hes so f*cking savy, knowledgeable and hip within the industry that he can abbreviate things) to make flash f*ck face these guys dont make much money just like any other touring act on an indie label

Hey_ 11/5/2008 3:28:18 PM

Typical knee-jerk Lambgoat Review. No Substance. No Thought. Just fodder for the dredges of unintellectual, lowest common denominator readers like "First post no Care's" and "Shit Band" etc. etc which lurk on this site like a Pedophile in Chuck E Cheese. Just proves that this site reflects more the mentality of a Car Wreck that everyone looks at and is not a viable and rich resource for true music review and discourse. This is my first and last post for which is and alway

no_ 11/11/2008 1:08:34 AM

this review is 65% filler, most of the time hes talking about stuff that doesn't even relate to the record, especially the whole paragraph about how many cds he gets and reviews, who the f*ck cares, you get free cds go f*ck yourself. i didn't know that a band exploring their creativity and maturing in their sound was a problem. most musicians don't care if people don't like them, you're supposed to write what you want, not what people tell you to write. and fear before certainly could care le

Chris_ 11/11/2008 10:39:19 AM

Never have I seen a review so biased. This was the first time I ever came to this site and it will be the last. Awful writing and an article that simply screams of ignorance. This is a fantastic album and I hope many many people give it a chance. Yeah the vocals aren't the greatest but they are far from terrible, they add a very "Raw" element to the album.

pepesylvia_ 11/11/2008 11:15:50 AM

All I have to say is if those are really the members of Fear Before posting, f*ck them. Don't be f*cking pussies. It's an internet review and not everyone is going to like you. You have a large enough fan base to forget this shit and keep on acting pretentious. If that's not really them, lol.

Benjamin_ 11/12/2008 1:49:30 AM

alright... what criteria are you judging this album? if you were expecting hanna montana vocals, than yeah the vocals suck... if you were expecting David Marions vocals, they kick ass he did not scream constantly, but he accomplished a sound exactly the way he wanted it that suited the music and that no one else can do, if that is not vocal talent, what is?? now you obviously had an expectation that was not met with this album... hence your disappointment that is what happens when a

That Guy_ 11/12/2008 7:08:15 PM

my friend whipped this album out the other day. played it beginning to end. I agree with this review with ABSOLUTELY no reservations. all that needs to be said to them is "what the FUUUUUUUUUUCK?"

Winston_ 11/21/2008 8:37:57 AM

Why is everyone on this website so hostile? If you see that 70 other people already called this band every name in the book what do you think you're adding by throwing out more hate? Fear Before is a really decent band, but somehow I turn into a homosexual (which is an insult? you make me sick) if I think so? Please, go get some sort of a life beyond bashing bands over the internet, there are a lot of more productive things you could be doing. But; if this makes you feel big and tough sitting at

anonymous 12/27/2008 5:56:03 AM

who is nick?

mttyfrsh_ 1/5/2009 7:43:21 PM

one of the funniest reviews I've ever read. The album is a total ripoff of the mars volta. I loved their last album but this is terrible, hes ripping Cedric Bixler-Zavala sooo hard.

anonymous 2/9/2009 2:21:20 PM

i heard the singer of this band likes jerking off in a room while fat girls threw food at him

catacomb_ 4/29/2009 12:24:03 PM

I don't understand why people on the comment board hate this band. this reviewer seems to hate the vocals, but everyone knows that vocals can be extremely debatable.. they're just different and raw, i've heard way worse. Also this band are not trend jumpers, the trend of the moment is 'oh i'm so hxc breakdown shit..' and this album is not that. They change and progress with each record..Why do you want a band that just makes the same material all the time. While i don't believe it is their

AMAZING_ 11/30/2009 2:50:10 PM

I picture a lambgoat to be a fat bearded man who listens to music that sounds as fat as he is. I am so glad I came across this little review. Made my day. You funny lambgoats.

anonymous 4/6/2012 6:56:49 PM

Great review. The vocals suck. The band sucks. They should hang up their instruments and go f*ck a glory hole or something.
