So melodic Christian emo/metalcore might not be your thing. It's certainly not mine. I could build an impressive fort out of all the miserable CDs I've been sent that would fall under that unfortunate umbrella. Burden Of A Day's debut album (2006) would definitely be somewhere in the middle of that fort, but somehow their latest record, Blessed Be Our Ever After, worked for me. It's just the right mix of later Underoath, Fat Wreck Chords-style guitar work, tambourine, Brand New and gang vocals to somehow wiggle it's way into my heart.

Burden Of A Day's strength definitely doesn't lie in their more "metal" leanings. There's a chug part in each song and a few riffs here and there, but the meat and potatoes of this record and its greatest strengths are the band's melodic side and their knack for arrangement. The soaring choruses rarely fall flat despite their overtly cheesy nature. Even the extreme slickness of the record's production works in the band's favor, as they have made the most of studio layering and trickery.

Everyone has encountered the formula for these songs before: Screamy part, sung chorus, chug, repeat. It's a little sad that there's not a lot of effort to break the mold here, but it's comforting to hear an act that can succeed within these parameters. It's easy to write off a band with song names like "Sorry Seacrest It's Casey's Countdown" and the unfortunately misspelled "White Coats And There Medicine" or chalk up one or two tracks to luck, but this record stands head and shoulders above the band's admittedly weak competition.

Bottom Line: Burden Of A Day aren't my new favorite band and I probably won't be spending a lot of time revisiting this disc, but it was an enjoyable listen nonetheless. If you've worn out your copy of They're Only Chasing Safety and you need a new guilty pleasure, Burden Of A Day could fill that void quite nicely.
