All right Mr. Dolving; you've made it quite apparent that you aren't overly concerned with maintaining any ties to your past musical endeavors. Wearing a cowboy hat in your promo-photos is fine (I'm fairly sure the singer of Poison wore one all the time too), and your performance on your new album speaks volumes. I'm just giving you a hard time about the cowboy hat thing. However, I'm dead serious (like Scott Vogel) about my disappointment with The Haunted's fifth album, The Dead Eye. I, unlike many people, really enjoyed rEVOLVEr and, like many people, have been a big fan of The Haunted. Granted there were some stylistic shifts on the previous album, but I wasn't bothered. I don't mind when bands experiment and try new things. But this time around, the members of The Haunted have pushed things too far and left us with an album that feels quite hollow in comparison to their previous efforts. The Dead Eye is noticeably lacking the raw energy that drove the self-titled debut and Made Me Do It and, as a result, this album sounds a bit phoned in. More often than not, it sounds like these riffs are just rehashed from earlier albums, with a fraction of the intensity. Sure there are heavy and interesting riffs here and there, but you'll have sit though a couple of songs before you'll find them. The drumming is much less forceful this time around, and many of these songs are played at an easy, mid-tempo. One thing bothering me about this album is Peter Dolving's affinity for this white trash attempt at singing. I heard it a little on rEVOLVEr, but it's all over this album. It gets old and isn't something I want to hear. I'm not sure what's going on, but even some of the riffs sound like some strange Pantera rip-off, so there's even more white thrash for you. Check out the fourth track "The Drowning" and you'll hear what I'm talking about, as well as a big C.O.C. influence. Some tracks can barely be classified as metal, so I'm a bit shocked here. There are way too many mellow moments with half-assed attempts at singing. Check out the seventh track, "The Fallout" for a reference. They even threw in a weird ballad with a piano as a secret track. This isn't The Haunted that I fell in love with. What are you guys doing Come back to me! Bottom Line: I really hate to give this a negative review, but there are barely any moments throughout The Dead Eye that even sound like The Haunted. Well, I guess bands change and that's their prerogative. However, with the extreme lack of energy and barely successful forays into unfamiliar territory, I won't be able to go along with The Haunted anymore.

cutter_ 11/11/2006 11:48:29 AM

Agreed. This record is a huge step backward for The Haunted.

I havent heard it but i'm pretty bummed that so far no one likes it. It must really be that bad. I'll give it a shot none the less.

if cory reviewed this album it would have gotten an 8/9/10 easily. sucks for the haunted he didnt get this one. now their careers are over. cory's good reviews = successful careers.

Cory_ 11/11/2006 1:46:45 PM

i would've scored it much, much lower. This is one of the worst records of the year.

anonymous 11/11/2006 2:55:01 PM

damnn this sucks .... the haunted is the shit ... but wtf is this shit honestly

sweetzombiejesus_ 11/11/2006 3:07:22 PM

Pfft, looks like somebody just doesn't "get" post-thrash.

Jesu_ 11/11/2006 4:06:13 PM

I disagree with this review, not his opinion, but his review... everyone can have their own opinion, that's cool, but these riffs on the new album aren't rehashed at all, and if they are, back it up with some examples. His singing is not half-assed, it's quite unique (slightly southern, yes), strong and confident. Yea the drumming is less forceful this time because-guess what-it's not thrash metal anymore, and instead of forcing it to be something it isn't they actually had the drums fit the

way to over-analyze shit. shut the f*ck up.

Dolving made 2 albums with rock band Mary Beats Jane in the early 90's, on a major label. It was inevitable that he would eventually return to rock. To be honest, he has the voice for it. As you can read in my review of rEVOLVERr, I felt that it was an album where the band was washed up and rehashing thrash riffs, and that's why I didn't like it. I would give Dead Eye a 7 for a number of reasons, even though I despised it when it first came in the mail. First, except for certain thrash parts (wh

^^^^ I like seeing a second opinion on this record. I wish lambgoat would sometimes post two or more reviews per album. It would be interesting to see different outlooks on each album... and it might curb everybody hating every review... which is stupid. Anyways... just a thought.

brett_ 11/12/2006 2:43:14 AM

Every album by this band would rip if they would just cut the shit. No singing bull shit. No talking bullshit. Just thrash.

drewcifer_ 11/12/2006 10:49:06 AM

their first album was one of my favorite cds for a long time. they've steadily declined since. i tried listening to this album but lost interest after literally a minute of cycling through tracks.

Gluck_ 11/12/2006 12:53:51 PM

So did I, drew, but if you give it more time it becomes good...how can you love Come Clarity so much but not this?

Nick_ 11/12/2006 1:51:15 PM

I love board references in the reviews.

Fur_Beach_ 11/14/2006 2:04:13 PM

this is utter garbage

CuntSnot_ 11/14/2006 4:16:50 PM

this band is, and always has been, crap... listen to Dark Tranquility and early Evergrey...

iamthearm_ 11/14/2006 8:08:19 PM

agree 100% with this review. dead on.

Flex_ 11/15/2006 9:12:08 AM

It's an ok album, I'd give it at least a 7, track 4 and 8 are the best songs, they are poppy, but good. Destroys the last 2 Soilwork albums by far, isn't quite as good as In Flames last two though, so it falls somewhere in between.

anonymous 11/16/2006 12:21:25 AM

crappy album.... new in flames blows... by the way its all about the jester race

Jonas_ 11/17/2006 8:12:05 AM

How come everybody hates this album? I think it's great! Songs may have a catch or two but is that really so bad thing? Dosn't sound like The Haunted. Open your ears man!

mike gluck_ 11/19/2006 3:13:11 PM

im one giant gay

Flex_ 2/1/2007 1:15:25 PM

This record isn't as bad as all the reviews I've seen. It reminds me of The Crown a bit with a little more Queens of The Stone Age and more clean southern vocals. The Crowning track 4 is a great song. I've give it a 7/10, it's not entirely horrible, and it's catchy as hell. This review makes it sound like they stooped to Atreyu or Killswitch Engage status, which is not the case, these guys are still 10 times better than the last Soilwork - Stabbing The Drama as a referrence.
