Within certain musical circles, Converge have reached a certain revered status where (to fans and detractors alike), much like Neurosis, the release of a new album has become a rather controversial event. Hype, backlash and adoration all inevitably ensue and it's hard not to be taken in by some of it. After a solid month of listening to No Heroes, I can finally declare that it is an excellent album and a worthy continuation in a line of great releases. If You Fail Me was a striking departure from the chaos of Jane Doe, No Heroes just feels like a more subtle, welcoming You Fail Me. Those might seem like two odd words to describe anything Converge has ever done, but contextually speaking, they fit. No Heroes' many stylistic departures and experiments help make Converge's songs slightly more digestable but arguably at the cost of some of the album's overall effect. Everything Converge has ever done has been relatively experimental at the time of its release, but No Heroes pushes fewer musical boundaries and focuses instead on experimentation within the band's own style. The first five songs all clock in under two minutes and collectively don't break the seven minute mark. "Heartache" alternates speed but never lacks aggression. "Hellbound" follows a similar formula soundwise to much the same effect. These tracks seem set to ease the listener into the record rather than immediately challenge them. "Sacrifice" is a slightly more complicated variation on the theme and ends up feeling a lot messier by comparison. This shouldn't be any surprise to those previously acquainted with the band's work, but newcomers might have a hard time with the abrasiveness of the disc's production. "Weight of the World" slows down the disc for the first time with a guitar line that instantly calls to mind "First Light" from You Fail Me. This track is the setup for the next portion of the album, the one-two punch of the title track and "Plagues," two of my favorite tracks on the disc. Surprisingly though, "No Heroes" has a self-referential moment as well, with the end sounding nearly identical to a point in You Fail Me standout, "Dropout." While I definitely appreciate that this album is an extension of a sound the band defined with that album, I can't help but be just a bit dismayed when something like this pops up. If it's intentional, I would've like it to be just a bit more obvious because as it stands, it just seems to be a warning sign of previously unquestioned creativity running a bit low. Thankfully, Converge follows the slightly confounding title track with my personal favorite track on the disc "Plagues." Kurt Ballou introduces an organ into Converge's repertoire for the first time and the result is one of the disc's finest moments. Even as an underscore to the guitar line, the organ creates a unique dynamic and a depth to this slower, relatively simple song. I think that this song also illustrates how fortunate the band is to be able to self-produce their albums with such high quality results. Ballou has developed into an engineering virtuoso over the last few years and this album finds him at the top of his game. It's dirty, ugly at times and incredibly gritty, but it fits the music perfectly and that's always been his strength. His production always helps establish the mood and No Heroes is another success on that ground. One of the biggest risks on the album is the album centerpiece "Grim Heart/Black Rose" featuring lead vocals from Jonah Jenkins (Milligram, Only Living Witness). Most fans familiar with the band's earlier material can speak to the mixed results when Jake Bannon tries to carry a melodic lead vocal, so outsourcing the vocal duties on this track is a surprising but effective way of making sure this ambitious track didn't lost any of its emotional power. At nearly ten minutes, it gets close to wearing out its welcome in terms of the album listening experience, but as a standalone track, it's excellent all the way through. The album's closing half features some of the most interesting choices but often, less interesting songs. The rock-style riffing of "Orphaned" marks an odd departure for the band, as do the intelligible vocals of "Lonewolves." These two songs sound like they've been influenced by current Detroit garage rock and progressive Kentucky hardcore. It's an odd and exciting departure for the band, but it just seems a little out of place in terms of the rest of the album. "Versus" tries to set things right again before "Trophy Scars" brings YFM's "Last Light" back for round two with a rousing chorus of "I want to live without the guilt we give. I want to die without this pain." Sometimes the various tracks on No Heroes seem to be pulling in all different directions, but what's truly odd is that few of the songs seem to suffer from this schizophrenia individually. All the tracks feel like complete statements but the album as a whole doesn't have the cohesiveness thatdefined their last two albums. One thing that has remained consistent however is the band's artwork, packaging and lyrical content. When a band is as adventurous musically as Converge, it's nice for fans to have something they can rely on and there are no surprises in these departments. Bottom Line: No Heroes is a fantastic collection of songs and, at times, an excellent album. The problem that I continue having with it after dozens of listens is that as good as any of its parts are, they just don't quite fit together. Converge have consistently raised the bar for themselves and this time, there's something that just hasn't quite clicked for me. There was never a point though that I stopped enjoying what I was listening to and in that sense, it's definitely a success.

This should be a good album as it returns to the sound of converge era "When Forever Comes Crashing" which was their best record to date in my opinion. With their last album "You Fail Me" they let go most of their abbrasive chaotic "coalesce"- sound which resulted in a mediocre HC album. No wonder every goddamn HC kid suddenly liked them. Back to Chaos, but most importantly back to Metal!

The fact that Jucifer gets a 9better score than Converge is proof that lambgoat has officially gone gay. Pull 'em down, boys - I'm headin' in!

charles_ 10/30/2006 11:14:03 PM

i cant believe the reviewer would even suggest the bands creativity is running low... their 16 years in! and every album is nothing short of amazing.. what other band can say that? and how can u complain about variation in the songs.. thats so stupid this review sucks. it should of gotten a 10.

I don't see how you can give You Fail Me a nine and justify giving this album an 8. You Fail Me was one of Converges least inspiring releases, No Heroes is f*cking amazing.

shockvalue_ 10/31/2006 12:08:06 AM

i dont like to criticize reviews because most of them are completely opinion and how can anyone tell a person how to review something, etc. but seriously, the new JUCIFER album is better than No Heroes? if you're going to have a rating system, it should make more sense than that.

hecubus_ 10/31/2006 12:17:02 AM

Sorry, I like converge okay, but they're MUCH more gay than Jucifer. I'm not saying one's better than the other, but Converge is about as emo/screamo as they come.

justinbean_ 10/31/2006 12:17:21 AM

this album is great and youre an idiot for not thinking so.

cdog_ 10/31/2006 12:23:04 AM

converge is screamo? somebody needs to die. in a very harsh manner.

thisonesformama_ 10/31/2006 12:27:07 AM

I'd personaly say 9/10, but the review was pretty spot on. All the songs are great, but as an album, the flow gets broken here and there. I know most bands put out collections on songs on a cd as opposed to constructing an album, but jane doe flows seamlessly from start to finish. I'm glad they are still experimenting though.

hecubus_ 10/31/2006 1:18:42 AM

Yeah, screamo. Just listen to them. If you don't hear it, then you're a delusional fanboy/girl who simply likes screamo music and can't admit it. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with screamo. It just is, and you like it. You'll be happier once you admit to yourself. Converge is okay. Nothing overly exceptional with them. But then again, I'm not a paid musician.

fuck_ 10/31/2006 1:28:51 AM

If you think Converge is emo or "screamo," you are a tremendous f*cking gay.

word_ 10/31/2006 1:30:49 AM

This cd is decent at best, and very easy to forget..

thealcoholic_ 10/31/2006 3:58:36 AM

This review reads like shit. OverANALyzed. This record shreds all. Spend enough time talking about the previous records? 9/10 only cuz i dont see why Trophy Scars made it on the record. Other than that, it flows amazing and yet again sets the bar for their genre for the next 3 years, yet again.

cdog_ 10/31/2006 5:28:47 AM

man i really hate this review.. anyway they are not f*cking screamo.. the album is 100 cohesive and makes perfect sense.. and trophy scars is a great song. the album is f*cking perfect.. there i said it. its perfect. and no im not joking.

honesty_ 10/31/2006 5:39:06 AM

youre all douchebags who cant admit you like(d) converge because your too busy jamming the most obscure (and probably shitty) band you can find for the sake of sounding cooler than everyone else. eat a f*cking dick. youre probably listening to it now.

compatibilist_ 10/31/2006 6:57:52 AM

Converge' only masterpiece was Jane Doe. All the hype around the latter albums is just for the band's "cult". So sad, this is an average record, according to the promo text: follower, not leader.

anonymous 10/31/2006 7:39:09 AM

I agree with above. Forgetable, and meh at best. Listen to it twice, you'll know.

burzum_ 10/31/2006 9:37:40 AM

I said it about Dismember and I'll say it about Converge...This album rips, just like all their others. I like No Heroes a lot better than You Fail Me, however.

carveyournamein_ 10/31/2006 10:45:43 AM

this album is 10/10

truthsayer_ 10/31/2006 10:57:29 AM

I've been listening to this record for a month straight, and almost every day since the CD was released. Easily a 9/10 album.

Nownmai_ 10/31/2006 11:54:10 AM

I still see a lot of creativity in this band and this record. Converge has never led nor followed, they've gone their own route. Don't disagree with the reviewer's opinion cause it does feel broken up. But I still love every second of No Heroes.

Shitty Titties_ 10/31/2006 12:28:05 PM

Everyone on this site blows old men. Converge's new album is not good. I've had it for at least a month and a half now and deleted it to make more space for good music. This band hasn't been good for even longer than all you gays have been going to shows. Everyone on this site has shit between their ears.

roger_ 10/31/2006 1:07:03 PM

good review...and the Jucifer and Converge records were reviewed by two DIFFERENT people, so it's not like this guy personally thought the Jucifer album was better. Retards.

burzum_ 10/31/2006 1:29:07 PM

You're entitled to your opinion of course, but what i like to know is what the hell are you listening to that's so f*cking fantastic Mr. Shitty breasts?? I want to know what brand of shit is in your ears.

TheWood_ 10/31/2006 1:42:20 PM

(1) Amazing record (2) YOU FAIL ME was far from bad (3) Converge is NOT "screamo"

Eaglesbecomevultures_ 10/31/2006 2:27:37 PM

it's a natural progression. it's the stripped down feel of you fail me, sped up and expanded. you can't really compare it to previous releases, like you can't compare you fail me to when forever comes crashing down.

well f*ck, no mention about "bare my teeth" - i thought it was it was a nice spin on some of converge's older elements added with an eerie clean guitar melody over some nice drumming triplets, etc etc etc and then when it "breaks down" its a nice little pummeling sound with some more conventional converge. just my .02

dingus buttfuck_ 11/1/2006 11:51:35 AM

People who say Jane Doe is Converge's only "masterpiece" never listened to Converge before that album. People who say Converge sounded like Coalesce need to get a clue and flip that statement around.... People who say Converge are "screamo"...well, just do us all a favour and eat a bullet.

Tyler_ 11/1/2006 1:04:50 PM

This is generally the reason why i stay away from metal/hardcore forums... metalheads calling each other gays all day long because their opinoins clash... great. No Heroes is a great, GREAT record with some blistering tracks, but after a while the record does begin to tire ever so slightly. The first few tracks are a great example. At first, when you first listen to the record you are literally assualted by some of the most brutal hardcore i've heard (in quite a long time), but after a while

RyanATF_ 1/17/2007 2:02:41 PM

Converge is an amazing band. They're ripped off by so many bands it's pitiful, so to see them put out an album that is a little different ( and might I add very good) shows how uncontemporary they are while other bands just put out the same record over and over again. Might I add, Grim Heart/Black Rose should show you how talented this band really is. They're beyond screamo or emo and any of that shit, they're genre defying. Believe it.

anonymous 1/29/2007 11:39:29 AM

amazing band? You know nothing

She_Stopped_Time_ 3/1/2007 3:06:00 PM

I must agree with RyanATF. Converge is amazing. Broken Vow changed my life (along with all of Jane Doe). That album made me see music in a completely different light. To see such a talented band still making music, not because they want fame, approval, or money, is great. They make music that they like to play and hear, so that they can play and listen to it. If you make music for any other reason than that, you shouldn't play music. Fan boy or not, Converge goes against every genre. f*ck genres
