So if you're actually taking the time to read this, you've probably already read the dozens of reviews of this record that have each said something to the effect of "Slayer's best album since _________." Everybody has a different idea of the last time Slayer actually put out a good record and most seem to insist that it was either Seasons In The Abyss or South of Heaven. What's confusing to me is that most of these people are acting like that's actually a compliment. In this reviewer's humble opinion, Slayer has released approximately one album you need to own and that album is Reign In Blood. Not only is it easily their best, it is (in my opinion) the single greatest metal album ever released. Unfortunately, their entire catalog before or since is so lackluster by comparison that despite owning most of it, I never listen to any of it. I bought into the Christ Illusion hype to a degree. I bought the record for $6.66 at my local record store and after a handful of serious listens, I'm ready to declare that Slayer still only has one album you need to own. If you absolutely love Slayer and refuse to listen to the hundreds of other incredibly talented and groundbreaking metal bands playing today, this could conceivably be your favorite record of the year. Unfortunately for Slayer, twenty years have passed since they released Reign In Blood and they haven't progressed an inch since. In fact, time has been incredibly unkind to them in their struggle to stay relevant. There is no doubt that Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman, Dave Lombardo and Tom Araya have been responsible for defining an entire genre of metal and inspiring an entire generation of metalheads, but what people seem to have forgotten is that they haven't released an amazing record in TWENTY YEARS. Hell, they haven't even released a mediocre one in the last ten. Is Christ Illusion a "return to form" I suppose in some sense it is, but it's an undeniably feeble attempt at regaining former glory. The album's strongest moment comes in its first minute, with the beginning of "Flesh Storm." It's straight thrash, 1986-style and it comes surprisingly close to "Angel of Death." Unfortunately, the song's chorus suggests the uneven quality of the rest of the disc to come. The bright moments are constantly undercut by the terrible ones, showing that while Slayer might be throwing in some of the old riffs, they've just forgotten how to write a solid song. "Eyes of the Insane" is as nu-metal as anything on God Hates Us All. The disc's strongest overall track, "Jihad," has the weakest intro on the record. Another potential high point, "Cult" goes from promising to weak as soon as the momentum built by the opening riff is snuffed out by an ill-placed slower bit. The lyrics (aside from a few cruelly amazing shouts of "Hail Satan!") are equally bland. Where once there was blind unequivocal rage, Araya feels the need to justify his animosity towards religion or his political standpoints and it just comes off as weak. Finally, while much has been made of the return of Dave Lombardo, the last twenty years have produced dozens of drummers capable of playing the same thing better. I'm not saying it's not exciting to see Slayer's complete original lineup back together, I'm just saying that Lombardo's drumming seems about as impressive these days as Kerry King's indistinguishable guitar solos. This isn't the sound of a newly rejuvenated titan redefining themselves; This is four old guys putting out a crowd-pleasing bit of heavy metal fluff to please the old school fans too set in their ways to look forward for new music and the adolescents too naive to look back more than five years for good music. Bottom Line: Christ Illusion may very well be Slayer's best album since South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss or Divine Intervention, but that doesn't mean it's particularly good. I'll admit it's nice to hear Slayer play a few thrash riffs and Tom Araya scream "Hail Satan," but this album is just another in a long line of Slayer records that will never have half the impact of Reign In Blood. I suppose it's not as sad as watching Metallica try to top Master of Puppets with St. Anger, but it's close.

f*ck this band

insideyou_ 8/21/2006 2:03:41 PM

oh!

AlbinoMim_ 8/21/2006 2:08:00 PM

They're obviously just doing it for the money at this point. It's much easier to just be a parody of yourself rather than write anything with some substance.

da_government_ 8/21/2006 2:19:36 PM

God cory you gay if you dont like anything metal then why the f*ck do you review it, your oponions mean nothing to me, you f*cking suck.

dingle_berry_ 8/21/2006 2:25:07 PM

spot on review. this band is shit now, kerry king is a mildly-talented, oakley-wearing gay who far too often spouts jealousy of other guitarists' talent.

Cory_ 8/21/2006 2:27:31 PM

Before anyone mentions this, I realized upon re-reading that I only mentioned Tom Araya's weak lyrics. Kerry King's lyrics are also incredibly weak, possibly moreso than Tom Araya's. Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman used to write great lyrics to great songs and now they're just out of juice. The end.

phil_ 8/21/2006 2:29:21 PM

didnt read the review but 5/10 sounds right crappy cd. i dont even care about slayer anymore.

Michael_ 8/21/2006 2:30:01 PM

Lombardo is better in Fantomas. Hanneman's solos are better than King's, people forget he's in the band half the time though.

sanseverything_ 8/21/2006 2:30:01 PM

IVE MADE MY CHOICE 6 6 6

Mike_ 8/21/2006 2:54:09 PM

wtf.

anonymous 8/21/2006 2:56:36 PM

kerry king can't solo. his solos are the only dark point on reign in blood. dave lombardo is still one of the best drummers in metal. this record is OK.

deez_nutz_ 8/21/2006 2:59:37 PM

I could care less about new Slayer stuff, its pretty meh after South of Heaven but Seasons In The Abyss > Reign in Blood

goodfellow_ 8/21/2006 3:19:48 PM

you guys act like the lyrics on all the past slayer albums were brilliant or something. come on

adam_ 8/21/2006 3:23:16 PM

"If you absolutely love Slayer and refuse to listen to the hundreds of other incredibly talented and groundbreaking metal bands playing today, this could concievably be your favorite record of the year." This has to be the most condescending review I have ever read. Only one album worth owning, and that's Reign in Blood? You have to be f*cking kidding me. Just because there are other bands that might be more technically proficient, doesnt mean they make better music. To each their own tastes,

dutch_ 8/21/2006 4:03:55 PM

there is absolutely no point in slayer still being around. they have nothing to offer the metal scene and the only thing they can EVER do is tread water. granted, they are legends, but they should walk away from music before they further make a mockery of themselves.

anonymous 8/21/2006 4:26:02 PM

Cory that was an excellent review. I agree 100%.

panzram_ 8/21/2006 5:09:37 PM

This is an excellent review, Cory. Might be your best.

D_ 8/21/2006 5:44:44 PM

idiots. scenester idiots.

bbbbb_ 8/21/2006 5:51:50 PM

I actually agree with Cory for once. "Eyes of the Insane" is the worst piece of shit song I ever heard. And the rest of the album is too much better. Spot on review. And all you gays saying "f*ck scenester kids" ..if you actually read the messageboards, youd realize theres NOTHING SCENE HERE

anonymous 8/21/2006 6:02:46 PM

Wow you really don't know what the f*ck you're talking about cory. If you don't think South of Heaven and Seasons are amazing records then you are seriously the biggest f*cking moron, metal poseur to ever walk the face of the planet. Go kill yourself you f*cking dumb piece of shit. You're just another f*cking follower jumping on the "it's cool to hate slayer" bandwagon.

Cory's Boyfriend_ 8/21/2006 6:20:44 PM

Saying that Divine Intervention, South of Heaven, and Seasons in the Abyss arent worth owning is like saying the kids on the lambgoat site know shit about music. How f*cking ignorant of a comment can that be? cory has too much shit between his ears.

Feen_ 8/21/2006 7:27:38 PM

the fact that you compared christ illusion to st anger just makes you an idiot. why would i take your review into concideration if you dont even like the band at all (you like reign in blood, so does my little nephew...) while RIB is undoubtablly the best cd (in music in general) and kerry king is definatlly a douchebag in most aspects... every slayer cd is amazing minus diablous in musica. i mean, hell awaits and south of heaven are masterpeices in their own right, slayer is one of the most con

FudgeYourYankeeBlueJeans_ 8/21/2006 8:03:59 PM

Slayer kind of bore me. i own Reign In Blood, South of Heaven, and Divine Intervention and listen to them maybe once a year. i swear 70% of their fanbase likes them because they're told to

Tom_Avaya_ 8/21/2006 8:13:58 PM

How can shouts--let alone anything else for that matter--be considered as "cruelly amazing"? Step it up, Cory.

nonono_ 8/21/2006 8:23:42 PM

For the record RIB is not the best record Divine Intervention is and Haunting the Chapel for coming out in '83 was a awesome f*cking song/EP! I own every Slayer album and can say that the only garbage I feel they ever put out was Diabolus In Musica and God Hates Us All. This album is more like a 7-1/2.

zero_x_potential_ 8/21/2006 9:28:10 PM

Fairly accurate review, though a little harsh. I'd give it a 6 or 6.5.

defective_language_ 8/21/2006 9:41:19 PM

quite an honest assessment of slayer if slayer was pursuing a notch of approval from the current metal intelligencia. if one is getting old it shows, so i see no reason why tom can't rationalize his lyrics. slayer is the ramones of metal. they didn't progress but one still can't avoid nodding their heads to the music.

thezero_ 8/21/2006 10:58:45 PM

so which of these "hundreds of other incredibly talented and groundbreaking metal bands playing today" will have more relevance than slayer 20 years from now?.. seriously, show some respect...

FudgeYourYankeeBlueJeans_ 8/21/2006 11:57:24 PM

f*ck that 'show respect' stuff. Black Sabbath influenced a ton of bands i listen to but i cant stand them. so Slayer helped usher in a relatively new genre of music at the time. that makes this cd good? i havent listened to it and will never listen to it because they are incapable of trying new things. ive heard like 30 Slayer solos. know how many i remember? just 1. yep, and by 1 i mean all 30.

feen_ 8/22/2006 12:14:25 AM

you dont have to show respect to either band.. it just means you have bad taste in music. your entitled to a bad opinion.

wizardsbeard_ 8/22/2006 8:18:35 AM

Slayer, like many defining bands of any genre, falls victim to being compared to a music scene that's taken their work and run with it for decades. I like Slayer, but the eventual slide from relevance is pretty par for the course.

ckk_ 8/22/2006 10:50:10 AM

f*ck this pieceo fo shit band, remembering never is so much better

marching_band_rules_ 8/22/2006 3:16:01 PM

slayer f*cking sucks. no one should respect them.

For the record I had Reign in Blood and I threw it away. Boring.

cydrx_ 8/22/2006 6:29:47 PM

SLAyer is classic, there new shit may be kinda weak, but all in all slayer is slayer f*ck all the haters

jon_ 8/22/2006 7:33:24 PM

ill be honest. ive never bought into this band one iota. while ill give them the credit of spawning a genre, they are completely overrated in every estimation. kerry king and hanneman are not even competent guitarists, nor have they written a decent solo ever...the funny thing is, kerry king talks more shit about every band, and they havent "progressed" or remained interesting one bit. i will go as far as saying that even METALLICA, who are now feeble in every respect, are more interesting th

Cory, I have already told you I no longer respect any of your oppinions on anything since you admitted on the board you don't like Seasons In The Abyss. Your done nigga, done!

Speaking of treading water... Once again cory proves himself as the worst reviewer on this board. Maybe you should try being a less condescending reviewer since your tastes in music are terrible. Just a thought.

f*ck slayer. they've always been boring and their fans only buy into their hype. hail satan. suck my dck.

Sawyer_ 8/25/2006 10:33:30 AM

yah cory your a gay. go mark to another gay bury your dead record.

united93_ 8/25/2006 12:56:25 PM

seriously, this is actually an accurate review that i agree with wholeheartedly. this band has become a novelty and nothing they've released since seasons has had a fleeting impact on metal, period.

sic blud_ 8/25/2006 2:55:00 PM

this cd is pretty good. death metal is my favorite kinda music n i woldn't consider this death metal bc most death metal has screaming, and gorwling or whatever. most people can't f*ckin handle it, because they like shit with pssy singing. if u havn't heard of these bands check em out: terror and lamb of god. there to of the most unterraded metal bands out their. slayer will alwayz be good, just not as goo d as those two bands. i like "christ illusion" but its still not as good as the first

sic blud_ 8/25/2006 2:57:11 PM

lol sry, not bean* band*

cory, you are a gay and i hate every review you make on this website. it just further proves that you are a complete scenester imbecile.

"In this reviewer's humble opinion, Slayer has released approximately one album you need to own and that album is Reign In Blood." Hell Awaits? You're a f*cking moron.

T.J._ 8/28/2006 11:33:11 AM

Reing In Blood is a classic but I would say its Slayer's 4th best album (South of Heaven, Hell Awaits, and Seasons In The Abyss being the top 3) Something about their new album seems fresh though. Its angrier and meaner than Slayer have been in years. After God Hates Us All I thought Slayer were out of it but this album is more uptempo and thrashier. Not quite as good as the last Exodus album its good to see these old school bands showing the newer shit bands how its done

xslick_mcfavoritex_ 8/29/2006 12:47:55 PM

Slayer bores me to tears, even Reign In Blood gets tedious if you listen to it more than three times a year. Serious fans of this band are the most ridiculous people I've ever met. They're washed, get over it.

Aaron_ 8/31/2006 2:09:46 PM

"this album is just another in a long line of Slayer records that will never have half the impact of Reign In Blood. I suppose it's not as sad as watching Metallica try to top Master of Puppets with St. Anger, but it's close." Hey, did you buy that line at Hot Topic? I think it was int he same sale rack as "Convege sold out when they signed with Epitaph" and "Poison the Well will never make another Opposite of December". Here's a neat line for you... get some new lines. The album won't win

Nick_ 9/1/2006 1:54:08 PM

well ther isnt much to say here....slayer is probably one of the worst bands ever but that's what makes then good. "Christ Illusion" is probably the most humorous in my eyes...if you actually listen to the song "Cult" for example and you take it seriously, you should probably consider drinking a gallon of bleach. so what I'm trying to say is...f*ck SLAYER they should've just given up after "Seasons In The Abyss"

JoBo_ 9/1/2006 10:15:29 PM

this Slayer record kicks ass...its in constant Rotation right now....I don't get how you new school f*cks can even drag it down. Its so under produced much different than that Unearth bullshit, and just blazing guitars vocals, and drums..easily the best since Seasons...even though all their records have at least some good tunes on it....Eyes of the Insane is kinda weak, but Flesh Strom, Cult, Black Serenade, Consfearacy, all killer shedders. f*ck all your Mall pop bullshit. Killswitch sucks, Thu

fucking _ 9/3/2006 3:07:43 PM

slayer come on there stuff is old this reveiw is right on. but reign in blood is not the single greatest metal album ever WTF are u serious DO you not lisin to any metal at all. i think we need to get an order of hearing aids. You people liek slayer cause you are told you. the funny part is you say its the best. and there lyrics are sad. i could do better. f*ck them and there cds.

coolcats_ 9/3/2006 3:13:03 PM

ha whoever the f*ck is talking about terror should go burn in hell becasue that band is all hype. Just becasue they are old and have more metal bass doesnt mean anything. so to that kid no wonder you like this CD you are a piece of shit and they made this for you. f*cking idiots.

Nick_ 9/5/2006 12:23:01 PM

hey jobo....at least killswitch is somewhat talented. listenign to slayer is like listening to crack addicted apes have fun with instruments. and tom should just give up on life
