Our score 5

While I am familiar with some of All That Remains' earlier work, I can't say that I've really been moved either way by this band. It's not I've thought these guys were a terrible band, but I haven't heard anything that's gotten me excited. Unfortunately, with The Fall of Ideals I remain apathetic. All That Remains' last album, This Darkened Heart, struck me as having a huge Killswitch Engage influence, albeit, a bit more metal. For The Fall of Ideals ATR has taken on a slightly more aggressive approach on some parts, and in other areas, has become more melodic. For example, while most songs use the formula of having metal verses, and melodic singing choruses, the sixth track (entitled "Six") is very close to a melodic death metal songs, ala Vehemence. On the flip side there are tracks that utilize more melody, whether in the riffs or singing, than an aggressive, metal style. But it is the formula (with the exception of the sixth track) that really gets to me, because it is used over and over again. The first two songs seemed a bit catchy to me, but by the fifth song I wasn't even sure how many songs I had listened to. It wasn't until I looked at my CD player that I caught up. The overall vocal performance throughout The Fall of Ideals is top-notch. With dynamics abound, Phil Labonte belts out high pitched screams, mid-range yells, low roars, and clean singing that is all flawless. As far as performance goes, there isn't one thing to complain about in the vocals department. Actually, the entire band executes their songs perfectly, but we all know skill doesn't equate with quality songwriting. All That Remains loves throwing in big breakdowns in all of their songs, and they all sound so similar to me that they could be interchanged between songs. There is only one riff that really jumps out at me, and that's the very beginning of the second track, "Not Alone," which is a picked out, jazzy part with solid timing behind it. What I can't figure out is why these guys decided not to use that riff again in the song. The production, orchestrated by Peter Wichers and Adam Dutkewicz, is full and crisp. I don't know why I'd expect anything else. It sounds very similar to anything that Killswitch Engage or Unearth would release. Bottom Line: I'm sure if you like All That Remains' previous material you'll enjoy The Fall of Ideals. To my ears however, it is formulaic, repetitive, and played out. It's a stellar performance trying to push mediocre songwriting.

They have overdone themselves. I couldn't believe they could do better than This Darkened Heart but I think they have. The drums are way better with this one. The line up change has only done good. Superb Album. Shredtastic. 10/10

holycitybradley_ 8/27/2006 2:38:07 PM

hate this cd.. not bad live, but on record, terrible.

elliot_ 8/27/2006 2:57:39 PM

i agree with the review. their stuff is always solid, but almost too solid. it follows a catchy formula and never strays from that.

sawtooth_ 8/27/2006 3:35:25 PM

i dig this cd. overall, a good review; i can see how it got a 5. i would give it a 7, personally. but then again, i find this band to be one of my guilty pleasures, i guess.

truthsayer_ 8/27/2006 3:58:54 PM

Tired of seeing/hearing this band and this style of music. I agree 100% with this review.

anonymous 8/27/2006 5:32:57 PM

reviewer is so full of shit

Gluck_ 8/27/2006 5:44:48 PM

I was going to review this but didn't get around to it...was planning to give it a 7/10 but your rating stands. As current as this style is, I still think it's a pretty good album that will stand up years from now and not sound pathetic. The solos are good too. But for originality I agree, not too strong.

d00d_ 8/27/2006 6:32:13 PM

solid but almost too solid? what the f*ck you gay.

Jonathan_ 8/27/2006 6:42:19 PM

Superb album. They have overdone themselves. The lineup change has only done them good. The review is bullshit. This record is dynamic, catchy, heavy as f*ck yet melodic at times. Great, well-rounded metal album. 10/10

vegans_taste_good_ 8/27/2006 6:49:18 PM

i would give this a 7 or an 8 i personally think its a pretty solid cd, but by track 8 it starts to get boring.

Jonathan_ 8/27/2006 7:01:09 PM

Oh and by the way, this album has 11 tracks, and "Six" is the 7th track. Get your facts straight, dipshit

Steve_ 8/27/2006 9:38:43 PM

Yea at least a 7, wtf is up with this review, someone kick this kid in the face

Jamie_ 8/27/2006 10:11:04 PM

Ya know, I understand the 5, but this album is way better than anything else in this genre, and brings in some outside influences to keep it interesting. Id give it a 7.5

ofgo_ 8/27/2006 10:13:17 PM

bunch of loosers... terrible overrated album..

anonymous 8/27/2006 10:30:50 PM

bbbbb_ 8/27/2006 11:45:40 PM

i really enjoy this cd. I completely agree with the 5 though. However 'Empty Inside' is a 9/10 track. That song shreds & the blasts are powerful as hell.

I hated All That Remains with a passion. Much to my dismay I had to sit through many of their performances to witness better ones to follow. But out of curiosity I listened to this MP3 and it is.. well... fantastic. Mildy hurts me to say, but I am really, REALLY into this track.

CuntSnot_ 8/28/2006 10:50:54 AM

Good band... so much better than a lot of popular Metalcore bands... good CD too, I guess it not D.I.Y enough for the hip reviewers at LambGoat

TJ_ 8/28/2006 11:02:34 AM

I dont really like this one as much as I like "This Darkened Heart". Its a little to repitive and all the songs seem to rely on the verse/chours/verse/chrous/solo/breakdown/chours formula that almost every shitty band is using thise days. Plus i dont feel like the guitaring is as interesting as on the last album their are no amazing solos like in "For Salvation". Although i will admitt the drumming did get better i dont feel like this surpasses their last album but its not really a bad album. i'

your opinion is irrelevan_ 8/28/2006 11:28:37 AM

Wow Jonathan. Get off this band's dck already, suck-up. Few albums in the 'history' of metal deserve 10/10. This tired release isn't one of them.

AlbinoMim_ 8/28/2006 1:05:00 PM

Even if it deserved a 7 out of 10, the rating gets knocked down a couple notches due to rampant gayry. C'mon guys, you're not in middle school anymore. This type of music isn't cool and it's an obvious gimmick to try to appeal to the masses.

Fur_ Beach_ 8/28/2006 1:46:26 PM

This band is f*cking terrible. I'm so tired of this style of warmed over sing song metalcore. I can't believe anybody with any taste of their own could even tolerate this album for 2 minutes.

fvckyouyoufvckingfvck_ 8/28/2006 3:34:15 PM

This cd is f*cking terrible. I would have given it a 4/10. "This Darkened Heart" is a much better album than this shit. Too much singing on this. It does have its moments. But not enough to out weigh the gayry on this cd. I returned it a week after I got it.

fvckyouyoufvckingfvck_ 8/28/2006 3:35:23 PM

sorry fur beach for starting my comments like you.

dude this cd kicks ass .... i love it soo much ... its like all that i listen too ... i can't wait to see them live

monarchy_ 8/28/2006 8:57:57 PM

this review is completely legitimate, however i enjoy this cd.

anonymous 8/28/2006 10:23:26 PM

This album is f*cking amazing. Better then almost all of their competition.

gozer_ 8/29/2006 9:04:39 AM

ever notice that this band sucks, and most people who like it have baggy pants and koRn stickers on thier cars? just an observation.

girls who run_ 8/29/2006 4:39:12 PM

finally, a decent reviewer. drop everyone else, let this guy take over.

WhatFuck?_ 8/30/2006 5:26:46 AM

I personally would give this a 7..I liked This Darkened Heart a lot better. A 5 I can understand based on the review, but a 5 is 50%, which is an F in grading terms, a 7 would be more just honestly, because with the extreme talent this band has, their next record will probably have them blasting out everything they have to blow minds.

toomuchhuge_ 8/30/2006 8:33:29 PM

Another McFeters excrement pile, another accidental skullf*cking of the english language.

Nick_ 9/1/2006 12:51:00 PM

ATR's new album is the most atrocious piece of shit excuse of an east caost hardcore record I think I've ever heard. Every song on the new album is the exact same structure and it is ridiculous... Phil has ofically tried to do nothing but become the white Howard Jones...too bad Horawd could tear Phil into shreads. If you ever wondered what Killswitch would've sounded like if they took Phil over Howard...this is basically what "The Fall Of Ideals" is. "This Darkened Heart" was an amazing albu

Dave2112_ 9/1/2006 1:06:15 PM

I stand by this review. I think in this genre, ATR is one of the best out there, everything about this record is great, except the KSE song writing. This genre is tired and this album is a reminder that there are only so many ways to have fun with a pillow.

piecemaker_ 9/2/2006 12:14:39 PM

this is a good band and a solid album, im sick of seeing them written off just because theyre lumped in with the whole metalcore genre.

james_ 9/5/2006 12:40:31 PM

this band f*cking sucks, on record and live. f*ck them and their gay nick lache-wannabe singer.

Satan_ 9/7/2006 9:32:03 PM

I'd hate to admit it but this cd is kind of a guitly pleasure for us down in hell. Praise me!

Jesus_ 9/27/2006 10:59:55 AM

Satans A bitch

macabre1285_ 12/22/2006 3:25:59 PM

Kiilswitch engae can't even solo or rip it up half as fast as this band.

DurkaDurka_ 1/30/2007 4:21:04 PM

Jonathan> Well at least he was really talking about the Sixth track ("is very close to a melodic death metal songs" [sic]), which is "The Weak Willed" and not "Six" Six is in Guitar Hero 2 though, and is one of the hardest songs in the game.

ihateemo123_ 10/15/2008 1:22:30 PM

generic, boring, and unorginal. songs all sound the same. i would have given it a 4/10.

shadow_ 10/19/2008 10:10:04 PM

wow you guys are ridiculous. personally i think they are a very talented group. you give them so much shit but you probably couldn't shake a f*ckin stick at a guitar. stop talking shit and show some respect to talented musicians or f*cking show me your video cleaner more original material.
