In these days where American Idol contestants attempt to present (without ever actually screaming) a rendition of pseudo-hardcore that sucked in the first place, it's refreshing when a band presents music that is straightforward and that doesn't define "taking chances" by adding in pathetic singing in the verses of its songs. This Incredible Machine is a band whose debut EP for This Blessing, This Curse Recordings refreshingly reinforces the notion that some bands are still concerned with progression in the scene. Using members' previous experience in St. Louis stalwarts Love Lost but Not Forgotten and Incision, This Incredible Machine quickly show that they know what they're doing on their debut EP, Monolith. The five musicians nicely blend disparate influences from up-tempo hardcore complete with the occasional breakdown or blast beat to broad, expansive instrumental sections laced with well executed electronics. Fans of many different backgrounds and aspects of heavy music will find numerous things to appreciate in these five songs. Some moments of the opening track quickly harken to a style of hardcore represented by bands such as Converge or Curl Up and Die. However, just when you think you have pigeonholed This Incredible Machine's overall sound, the band changes gears and incorporates contrasting stylistic layers that are unexpected. For example, the songwriting in the track "Atlas" demonstrates that the group is comprised of deliberate craftsmen, rather than a cookie cutter reflection of other influences. Bottom Line: Debuts, especially short EPs, are generally hard to judge. Is the material a good representation of a band's capabilities Or, is the brevity of the format masking subtle deficiencies Hopefully we'll find out. Regardless, Monolith is a widely encompassing debut; varied and powerful.

deadwithfear_ 3/11/2006 7:25:12 AM

march_of_flames_ 3/11/2006 9:39:13 AM

ive been in love with this band for a long ass time now, its good to see them well on their way, noticed, and getting good reviews.

jim_dangle_ 3/11/2006 1:35:46 PM

i dont want to sound like an jerk but i think they only had ex-llbnf members for one show, they're not on this recording, and they're not still in the band.

united_ninety_three_ 3/11/2006 2:50:50 PM

i completely agree with this review and rating. this band is good at what they do, but seriously...just listen to cuad overall.

simon_belmont_ 3/11/2006 3:28:46 PM

isnt the cover art the same as a poison the well cd?

anonymous 3/11/2006 7:30:46 PM

Jesus christ does everything on this site get a 7? Seriously, look at the last 5 reviews, they're all 7s

blessedxcursed_ 3/11/2006 7:43:31 PM

to clear things up: 1) I believe the review was done when members of LLBNF were in the band... now there are no members of that band... there you go 2) The cover art isn't the same as PTW... it's an aerial shot of the world with red tones... it's more like Panopticon than anything else 3) The upcoming full length (out Dec 06) will destroy this EP garth this blessing this curse

Trev_ 3/11/2006 8:06:27 PM

This band would play circles around Curl Up and Die. Whoever compared them to TIM, should be ashamed of themselves. Who gives a shit about CUAD, or PTW for that matter? Both of those bands are f*cking terrible.

united_ninety_three_ 3/12/2006 3:34:04 PM

cuad was an incredible band trev, and for saying tim could play circles around them is evidence that you utterly lose at knowing shit about good music.

Will P_ 3/12/2006 7:42:32 PM

I agree with trev. curl up and die sucks. this incredible machine is a far superior band

battleaxed_ 3/16/2006 3:51:58 PM

i saw them at a floor show in illinois. their first song was like 15 minutes long. i bought the cd and it's not on it. :(
