Within the metal community, there are certain bands whose complete disregard for current trends and commercial success has cemented their place in the hearts of fans and critics alike. Names like Neurosis, The Melvins, Brutal Truth and Mike Patton have all been responsible for creating milestones in metal's history, and Billy Anderson has been one of the men standing inconspicuosly behind the scenes, producing these artists on some of their most seminal work. After ten years of producing and playing in his own projects, Anderson joined Blessing The Hogs, a band that has drawn influence from all the aforementioned bands and more in their unabashed desire to create sonic devastation. Fans of the band's previous album, The Poisoning, should at least be partially prepared for The Twelve Gauge Solution. The unrelenting pace and heaviness of this album, coupled with its "thick" sound produce a one-of-a-kind listening experience akin to hearing Mastodon's Remission the very first time. Anderson's production of his own band definitely ranks among his finest work, as each individual piece of this remarkably dense puzzle is clearly distinguishable from the rest. The disc's eleven original tracks blend thrash, grindcore, rock, sludge and stoner metal, and the hardcore gone metal vocal stylings of Billy Anderson and John Sargentini serve as a fitting complement. Rounding out the disc are two seemingly bizarre (but remarkably executed) covers of Quicksand's "Fazer" and the Melvins' "Hog Leg," both featuring lead vocals by Coalesce's Sean Ingram. As welcome as it was to hear Ingram's voice on a new recording, it did surprise me to hear how similar Anderson's own vocal style was. Regardless, any band capable of pulling off Quicksand, the Melvins and 45 minutes of mind-blowing metal all in the same album are more than OK in my book. Bottom Line: Simply put, there isn't a moment on The Twelve Gauge Solution when one can doubt the complete sincerity and devotion to the band's artistry. Complex without being overly complicated and brutal without being brainless, Blessing The Hogs have created a work that may someday be regarded as highly as the other landmark albums Anderson himself helped create.

twelve gauge valentine?

anonymous 7/16/2005 5:49:16 PM

Leave it to Lambgoat to over-rate anything that has this hideous blend of genres: "blend thrash, grindcore, rock, sludge and stoner metal, and the hardcore gone metal vocals"

anonymous 7/16/2005 6:51:06 PM

i've liked these dudes since 1999

xtroyx_ 7/16/2005 7:01:58 PM

can't f*cking wait to hear the whole album. so heavy.

anaturaldisaster_ 7/16/2005 8:19:33 PM

Good album, tight band. Gets a little monotonous after a while though.

Cory_ 7/16/2005 11:27:32 PM

This record is great. Oh wait, I already said that.

caseyfuckingjones_ 7/17/2005 1:13:53 PM

I gotta say, if you're angry that the review doesn't give you a clear enough idea of what it sounds like, we do usually provide a link to an MP3. Quit being lazy.

godless_ 7/18/2005 10:58:32 AM

yes!

Vorak_ 7/18/2005 2:18:38 PM

I'm enjoying the mp3. not bad.

The Set Up Hates You_ 7/18/2005 3:12:48 PM

OK. That's it. I ahev had it with lambgoats reviews. If you give something a "9" it shoul dbe because the album is next to the perfect record and is groundbreaking and completely revolutionary (as hardcore and metal should be), not because of what bands they SOUND JUST LIKE or what members were in prvious projects. Just cause Simon Brody is still in Drowningman, doesn't mean you're gonna give that shit pile of a record (known as don't push us when we're hot) a 10 casue Rock N Roll Killing Machin

Downer_ 7/18/2005 7:43:45 PM

Why be angry because this album got a good review? Maybe the reviewer actually liked the disc. Lambgoat is one of the best places on the net providing news and reviews on heavy music. I haven't heard this disc yet but I can say without hesitation that this bands first disc "The Poisoning" spent months in heavy rotation in my cd player. Best band in the world? No, but a standout band none the less. These guys sound like nobody else. You gotta admit, alot of bands out there right now are hard to

wannabe_ 7/18/2005 9:43:01 PM

Hey I'm a f*cking gay!

TheWood_ 7/18/2005 10:16:58 PM

All of you ignorant lame "scenester" should shut the f*ck up. You wouldn't know a good record if it bit your jerk right this second. BTH is one of most unique bands around today. All you gay breakdown posers should just shut the f*ck up, go listen to your Hatebreed records and practice your wanna bee gay kung fu dancing moves in front of your mirrors in your mom and dads house. I'm sick and tired of all you gay message board queer fux damaging hardcore and bands that have true in

justicejohnson_ 7/20/2005 1:29:55 PM

TheWood_ 7/20/2005 5:08:52 PM

"Hey gayz, here comes that breakdown, get ready cause this breakdown is gonna be your faces." It's official...killemogayz has set the new standard for mental retardation.

panzer_ 7/20/2005 11:33:08 PM

ROFL @ the shit-fest above. Good review. Awesome MP3. I will definatly check out more of these guys. Plus anything with Scott Ingram involved always at least gets one listen from me.

TheWood_ 7/21/2005 10:17:59 PM

"f*ck you and your wet seal gift certificate." Hahaha...a king of the one-liners, truly.

kenwregget_ 7/24/2005 12:41:01 AM

Who's Scott Ingram? Sean's alterego?

Cory_ 7/24/2005 3:07:51 AM

I was gonna comment on that a while ago, but figured I'd just let it go. Scott Ingram...sheesh.

Michel Goulet_ 7/25/2005 6:43:01 PM
