Did you ever wish you could distil all the good parts of something and toss the rest Well, luckily for you, that's exactly what I did for Symphony In Peril's The Whore's Trophy. If you paypal me $5, I'll reveal the seconds of track time to record until you have created a listenable album, or really, what I guess amounts to a listenable one-sided 7". This band is the prototypical example of "Christian Metalcore." Hot button issue, lookout. For the record, I don't give a shit about their choice of idol. I grew up on Krishnacore and hardline bands so I don't find other people's beliefs to be all that scary. But I guess if you're 16 and looking to make your name as the "anti-god" kid then you will hate this right-off-the-bat. You can stop reading now and go yell at your grandfather for his "institutional sadism," then invert all the crucifixes in the house. The rest of you: I use Christian metalcore to describe the sound. If you don't know what I'm talking about, take a cross-country tour, start in the south, and stop at every VFW hall you can find. Doubtlessly, you'll hear some of what I'm trying to describe. Overcome and Zao (incidentally, onetime Zao member Shawn Jonas sang on this album) laid the template and hundreds have followed. This thing has snowballed and gotten progressively more metal as it gained speed. Which brings us to our perfect specimen: Symphony In Peril. "Perfect" in that they sum up what everyone seems to be shooting for. Not to be confused with "perfect" in the sense that they sound good. Rather boring and overdone from the first note, this album starts with no steam and instead of gaining some- it steals yours. I felt tired after listening to twelve tracks of uninspired chugs and poorly delivered lyrics. Not a good tired. Not "oh man, that shit is so intense it wore me out" tired. Just beat, like I just had to stand through a seminar on how to manage my retirement savings. The only true highlight was the laugh factor tied to the melodrama of "WE WILL REFUSE AND WATCH YOU BURNNNNNNNN" in the song The Whore's Trophy 1. Some small comic value was taken from the album art which seems to be an ethereal Tampax ad. Bottom Line: You don't need this. I wish this band all the luck in the world, yadda yadda, but this album is so average the only thing making it remarkable is the not-often-seen ABSOLUTE level of average it aspires to. If I had to comment to a friend about this I would say, "Man, it blew me away how average that record was."

first post. while i agree that the record was average, maybe the reviewer should spend a little more time actually talking about the record...

ipoopedinyourcloset_ 4/9/2005 7:29:11 PM

I sometimes wonder why I even bother with this site. I knew the score before I looked in the review becasue of the genre. Not a ten, but certainly not a 5.

bigup_ 4/9/2005 7:55:04 PM

total conventional metalcore. so don't f*ck up to this band of plus!

rainbowsatan_ 4/9/2005 8:26:56 PM

I really liked their first record but this is "average" metalcore cookie cutter bullshit. I gave it one listen and now its on deck incase I can't pay the electric bill.

a_new_religion_ 4/9/2005 8:30:04 PM

burn on jesus!!

Zach_ 4/9/2005 11:41:22 PM

Wow, what a terrible review. This site seems to have something against christianity. It's getting old.

Jason_ 4/10/2005 12:23:10 AM

Still have no idea what the album sounds like. I guess lambgoat will let anyone review an album these days. Stick to the fan reviews section Patrick.

"This band is the prototypical example of "Christian Metalcore." "Overcome and Zao...more metal" "no steam" "uninspired chugs and poorly delivered lyrics." Did you even read the review?

amazed as always_ 4/10/2005 2:06:53 AM

"this site seems to have something against christianity..." did you read the review? he made it pretty clear their faith is a non-issue.

Ohhhhh_ 4/10/2005 3:47:01 AM

No offense, but 3 lines that actually say what the album is like with four paragraphs of shit is not a review. Typical metalcore? f*ck yeah. Is it shit? I don't believe so. Every review of a christian band turns into a review on religion or the members of the group. This kids reviews remind me more of a pahardcore.com review. And this album did deserve, AT MOST a 6.

xpdx_ 4/10/2005 3:56:54 AM

this band is f*cking terrible

mrwong_ 4/10/2005 6:13:32 AM

Absolute Shit

awesome_ 4/10/2005 8:47:39 AM

Sucky sucky poopy shit.

xscottx_ 4/10/2005 9:43:34 AM

Although I agree with the review (Average...typical generic Christian metalcore), I still think religion as a whole is getting out of hand with how much it takes the focus out of the music...Not to say that this review is precisely what kind of a record this is, average.

moshandroll_ 4/10/2005 9:56:14 AM

wow, i am surprised that this record wasnt as good as the e-card made it to be.

mark_ 4/10/2005 12:07:05 PM

like the very first thing he said was that the religious aspect doesnt affect his opinion. he then goes on to poke fun at kids who are so anti-god. not a christian bashing review at all. and as far as talking about the music, how much of a description do you need? if you listen to enough of those bands, "conventional metalcore" should be pretty self-explanatory - that means it explains itself.

elliot_ 4/10/2005 12:51:39 PM

hahah...where the hell does he poke fun at christian kids in this review? i think you saw a mirage or something.

hahaha_ 4/10/2005 8:09:20 PM

Tampax ad.

notdeadyet_ 4/11/2005 12:19:00 AM

nice review! These guys are too f*cking overrated

vegan4life_ 4/11/2005 4:02:14 AM

AWFUL review. I do not know what album the rest of you heard but they definately put a new spin a stale genre

ipoopedinyourcloset_ 4/11/2005 8:39:53 AM

So in other reviews, it should be stated that this is "non-Christian" metalcore? I wouldn't expect much positive in this review; your preference seems to be toward indie rock...

chuck T_ 4/11/2005 11:40:51 AM

you're a gay patrick. and again. talk about the damn music.

pshhh. lame_ 4/11/2005 11:44:59 AM

this rear site gives retarded bands good reviews. and so sip owns all your shit music f*ckers.

XdavidX_ 4/11/2005 12:47:38 PM

I agree this isn't the best album and a 5 is a good score, but this is by far the WORST review I've ever read. I don't care about your rant on religion or the classification of "Christian metalcore," tell me about the music, after all this IS a music site

eaglesbecomevultures_ 4/11/2005 12:54:04 PM

honestly, how can you complain about him not talking about the record? did you read the review? apparantly the cd is so stale and cliched as to warrant one sentance that sums up the entire album 'I felt tired after listening to twelve tracks of uninspired chugs and poorly delivered lyrics.' Nowhere in the artical does he attack Christianity. Patrick does put down Christian metalcore, though not because it's Christian, but because the majority of it is bland and easily predictable.

zach_ 4/11/2005 1:13:21 PM

Listen this band asks for a $400 guarantee at their shows, maybe they won't anymore because they don't have a "former member of zao". I did however think the tampax ad part was f*cking hilarious....good one patrick.

yo_ 4/11/2005 1:28:58 PM

this band good

dickholesuprise_ 4/11/2005 4:44:28 PM

I think they're cool dudes and all...the band really isnt that good...but 400 bones? sheesh. and that tampax comment was amaz

xsecondthoughtx_ 4/12/2005 8:12:42 AM

This is such a lame review. Christian metalcore is predictable... yes... but isn't all metalcore predictable. Same with most styles of music, everything has been done so many times that of course we will know what will happen next. Unless its noise/tech you can pretty much say ok fast part here comes a breakdown. Whats your point? So lame.

ThousandBleedingStars_ 4/21/2005 6:15:14 PM

I like to listen to this album on repeat and watch Donnie darko to see if it has any significance. So far....no

JRB_ 12/16/2006 7:04:45 AM

regaurdless of religion, or anything else that shouldnt biasis the listener, the album was solid. the reviewr seemed to focus, even with his reasurrance, too much on the bands tie to religion. from start to finish, each song carries its own wieght, with a gem or two inbetween. personal faith shouldnt make a difference, review the music, not the peoples beliefs.

Chris_ 4/18/2007 12:35:42 PM

This site does bash christianity too much in every review of a christian band. its old. its lame. it should stop. and holy crap, stop comparing everything to lamb of god, they were never good and never will be

Jamey In Peril_ 10/11/2009 8:57:46 PM

You f*cking shithead. You don't know the first thing about Christian Metalcore; we put a lot of time and effort into this CD, and it's one of the heaviest releases of the year. We better not catch you around at any shows, because if my crew sees you, you'll wish you never got out of bed that day. Oh, and to everyone who actually CARES about this record, listen up! Thanks to everybody who bought it already but for those who have not been able to find it, try TARGET, yes TARGET is stocking it for
