I am of the honest opinion that Cursed may very well be one of the only punk rock bands that really matter right now. Their blend of thrashy punk and sludge grew from the ashes of The Swarm, Ruination and Left For Dead, and with the release of their second album, Two, they have honed their distinctly evil sound to a jagged point. The ten songs that comprise Two showcase the refinement of the uniquely savage style that was so impressive on their Deathwish Inc. debut, One. While the relative simplicity of their musical approach and the grittiness of their production might turn off certain listeners, there is more than enough great music on this record to appease the harshest critic. After the album's brief but fitting introduction, Cursed launches into a series of songs that, while raw on the surface, are expertly written and executed. Each of these hardcore gems is complemented with some of the most darkly intelligent lyrics I've heard since American Nightmare's first record. The one thing that stands out above all the other fine points of this record is the guitar riffs. Despite the lines themselves often bearing slight resemblance to other artists, as in the seemingly Misfits-inspired opening to "Reparations" or the Black Sabbath-esque "Model Home Invasion," their implementation is pure gold. Back all this up with a rhythm section that resembles a steam roller more than drum and bass, and the end product is highly enjoyable. One of the most fascinating things about Cursed (to me anyway) is their incorporation of violent imagery into personal and socio-political songs. While most of the crust and sludge that no doubt inspired them is obviously more interested in content than aesthetic, Cursed have created a hybrid of stylistic, innovative music with thought-provoking content, the whole of which is greater than its parts. This record could still be enjoyable if one just listened to the music or as a collection of poems, but the combination of the two is a tour de force of restrained rage. For Two, Cursed even adds a few tricks to their repertoire. The slow piano drone of "Two" creates a haunting segue between the album's first half and its second. The groove-based "Model Home Invasion" showcases both the clearest delivery of Chris Colohan's insightful lyrics and the clearest indication that Cursed's songwriting capabilities stretch beyond what they've revealed thus far. The one-two punch of that track combined with "Hell Comes Home," easily the disc's most powerful track, both lyrically and musically, could serve as the most effective musical argument for this band's quality. Bottom Line: I love this band and this record. I could search for a complaint or think about who might not care for it, but quite frankly Cursed is the sort of band with something more to offer than the average hardcore/punk/metal/whatever outfit and I'd rather not do them that disservice. Two is intelligent, distinctive and incredibly powerful. This is undoubtedly going to be the thinking man's punk rock record of 2005.

Alex_ 12/31/2004 1:32:26 AM

chaotic_harmony_ 12/31/2004 2:22:54 AM

OMG i want it.

hxcobd_ 12/31/2004 4:08:04 AM

Good shit right here. A 9 well deserved.

adam hellbound_ 12/31/2004 5:50:41 AM

Only one complaint: why not a 10?

dutchstep_ 12/31/2004 6:44:59 AM

how can you talk for five paragraphs about how great an album is and NEVER say one bad thing and then give it a 10? goddamn that bugs me! this review reads as if the album is flawless, yet its rating is one of a great but slightly marred album. if you're not going to write about any imperfections, then don't give it an imperfect score.

Daniel_ 12/31/2004 8:34:57 AM

Goddamnit, I can´t wait to get my sweaty palms on this gem. It's gonna be a bl'ast to see them in Stockholm, Sweden on feb 22.

ghetto_paul_ 12/31/2004 8:47:55 AM

one of the best bands out there, I've only heard the "Head of the Baptist" and "Hell Comes Home" (their best song to date), can't wait to hear the rest.

webmaster_ 12/31/2004 9:06:47 AM

dutchstep - i set the f*cking ratings. no album will ever get a ten unless it's reviewed by me. And unless a Frizzle Fry or a Wish You Were Here caliber album comes out, nobody will ever get a ten. I can't believe you people get so hung up on these scores.

canwestartagain_ 12/31/2004 10:26:22 AM

excellent album, 9/10 is a good rating.

dutchstep_ 12/31/2004 11:36:22 AM

fair enough. i just feel that its the reviewers job to point out flaws in an album. cory said he "could" and didn't. i guess i just don't understand the system.

DROPDEAD_ 12/31/2004 1:03:55 PM

incredible band.. can't wait until i can buy this album.

matt_ 1/1/2005 2:56:04 AM

I need to hear this

twodegreesbelow_ 1/1/2005 10:20:30 AM

i hope this is better than one.

LifetoLifeless_ 1/1/2005 12:39:58 PM

Seriously, what's so great about this? I listened to two songs and it did absolutely nothing for me. I don't get why you're all on their nuts.

F U_ 1/1/2005 5:03:32 PM

pantera and tool got 10s

XPoopx_ 1/2/2005 1:42:07 PM

To LifetoLifeless, You don't get it because you're an idiot. Period.

anonymous 1/2/2005 6:19:46 PM

cory, is there ever an album that isnt a 9/10?

Cory_ 1/2/2005 8:41:40 PM

there are TONS of records that aren't a 9/10. you can easily read every review I've ever done for Lambgoat and see that.

PGchris_ 1/3/2005 8:47:53 AM

i dont get it

Ben_ 1/4/2005 10:53:56 AM

Found out about this band while checking out shit on Deathwish Inc.'s website back in March, I then instantly went out and bought this CD, it's so f*cking awesome. If you haven't yet check out Left For Dead, Ruination, and The Swarm(who is a bitch to find, message me on Soulseek for some of their stuff, BizzleBrizzle90), Chris's other bands.

ThisAintSweetTea_ 1/4/2005 7:42:38 PM

why dont you kids buy the music? its one thing if your downloading the new lil jon cd, and learning the newest catch phrase so you and your eyeliner wearing gay friends can talk black or what the f*ck ever, but come on, get $10 from your mom and dad... you lazy slobs get a job and buy the music.

Ben_ 1/5/2005 1:19:50 AM

ThisAintSweetTea Was that to me? I was just offering The Swarm to anyone who wants to see what they sound like.

xannebowmanx_ 1/9/2005 4:00:19 AM

I just want to say that if it weren't for downloading music, I wouldn't know about many of the bands I know about and also wouldn't attend their shows or end up buying their CDs or any other merchandise. Your logic is flawed. Downloading music is great for underground music.

greaser_ 2/15/2005 11:51:13 AM

They're greeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaat!!!!!!

united_ninety_three_ 7/9/2006 4:13:15 PM

Andrew_ 12/30/2010 1:10:11 PM

Cursed 'TWO is a masterpiece! I cant honestly find any flaws with this release.
