Our score 4

by Ash Levitt

I have a novel idea. Let's throw caution to the wind. Let's start a band. We'll play a sort of old school style: straight-up (you'll see the irony in a second), no frills hardcore. I don't want any of this singing about broken hearts shit. I don't want any element of sensitivity in this music. I want brutal, fast hardcore with crushing breakdowns. I'm thinking Hatebreed, Earth Crisis, and the massive range in between. The message is important too. Lyrics can only be about straight edge and/or smashing someone's face in. Who's with me This is precisely what Too Pure to Die's newest offering, We Are a Weapon, is all about. Before I get into the musical aspects of this review, allow me to demonstrate the diversity of the lyrics of this recording. Track 1: "…For you this is a battle. For me this is life." Track 2: "…X the fuck up…" Track 3: "…If you want to get tough.Get tough motherfucker…" Track 4: "…The bloodbath is soon to come…We will fight…" Track 5: "…Fuck you…This all ends tonight…" Track 6: "…Drugs aren't the answer…" Track 7: "…If I had one chance I'd make today your last…" Track 8: "…Now I'd rather go home with this X on my hand…" Track 9: "…Go straight edge…Die for Live for Die for straight edge." Track 10: "…Make sure you take that last fucking sip…" This is the kind of stuff that gives straight edge a bad name.If these guys did every thing they talk about in their lyrics, they would kill off most of the hardcore scene. Unless you really hate people who aren't straight edge, do you really think that saying things like "Go straight edge" followed by a threat is going to make someone want to stop smoking, drinking, or whatever Musically, this recording is not bad, except for the fact that the songs all sound the same. The band is tight, and heavy. The dual vocalist approach is perfect for this type of hardcore (even though there is not much difference between the two voices). However, it still sounds like most Hatebreed songs with the occasional slower, Remembering Never-type breakdown. Bottom line: There are plenty of bands out there, straight edge and not, who play more or less straight-up, no frills hardcore, and do so in a way that makes them unique (Love is Red, With Honor). No one is suggesting completely reinventing the wheel, but put your own spin on the interpretation of a story that has been told so many times before. At least change themes both musically and lyrically. Instead of investing in this recording, go dust off and listen to your old Hatebreed and Earth Crisis CDs.

K thanks for the advice but my EC and HB albums aren't dusty at all. This is a pretty good album and the 4/10 rating was just a cop out. You lose.

tylerxmauseth_ 8/18/2004 4:29:40 PM

how much can i disagree. good riff work, good kids and one of the only straight edge bands left that isnt ashamed to admit that they are edge. f*ck this review.

jeff_ 8/18/2004 4:33:35 PM

the reviewer clearly gave this record enough attention to even put the right record label on this review. don't listen to this retard. this cd is awesome and fun. note to the reviewer. this record came out on state of the art recordings. not perfect victim. if you're going to do reviews at least be competent

Ash_ 8/18/2004 4:42:58 PM

First, I didn't put the label up there like that. It requires a webmaster to do that, so go talk to him. Second, the piss poor monotony of this record has absolutely nothing to do with admitting you're edge or if you're a good guy or not.

JB_ 8/18/2004 4:46:52 PM

I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I think this CD is so freaking good. Its not attempting to be original or lyrically interesting. Its just in your face tough guy hardcore and I enjoy it.

justin_ 8/18/2004 4:55:54 PM

this cd is f*cking gay, and so is this gay ass militant straight edge gimmick they have. Lighten up and drink a beer gays.

666_ 8/18/2004 5:01:37 PM

you f*cking c*nts. why do you guys like this shitty band so much? don't gang up on the reviewer like you would on some kid at shows. hes right about this worthless f*cking album.

homesic_ 8/18/2004 5:09:55 PM

this band gay. The lyrics must have been written by a retarded third grader. "I'll X THE f*ck UP!" hahaha. Good thing this band doesn't drink or do drugs, because it doens't sound like they have very many brain cells to spare.

erik_ 8/18/2004 7:01:31 PM

I hate most hardcore, but these are good kids with a positive sXe message. f*ck all you drunks and addicts. Deep down you're all just in denial that you're letting corporations and drug pushers take your money to kill you slowly from within with their shit. sXe for life.

you_in_hawk_country_now_ 8/18/2004 8:35:24 PM

this band is awesome, end of story. any judgement would be incomplete without seeing them live. it's the too pure to die EXPERIENCE...not to be duplicated. often imitated, grammy nominated, cheerleader prom-dated.

Ohhhhh_ 8/18/2004 9:31:42 PM

Those are the most ridiculous lyrics I've ever heard. And if the vocalist really sat down to write that shit, I'd be amazed. That's more along the lines of "I was doodling in fifth period Math, and this is what I got guys" lyrics. I don't doubt the music being heavy and fun, nor is the reviewer, so you kids slamming him are morons.

Murph_ 8/19/2004 12:06:03 AM

"Make sure you take that last f*cking sip?" Hahahhahaha. It's a Guinness, I'm not going to waste it. Morons.

xMXLx_ 8/19/2004 2:28:22 AM

f*ck the review, I love this band. I love this cd. its good fun hardcore made by kids who want to have fun.

xbloodx_ 8/19/2004 9:54:36 AM

One of the best new bands out there. Keeping it real and backing every word they say. This band isn't a bunch of scrawny computer nerds not backing their words. They walk their talk and live by what they say. These guys are a straightedge band that actually talks about straightedge, unlike most of the straightedge bands out there. Great recording guys, keep up the good work! XXX

fuckyou_ 8/19/2004 10:34:25 AM

how do you figure these are kids who just want to make music and have fun? you make them sound like the goddamn partridge family. when was the last time you heard a stoner band say smoke pot or we'll smash your f*cking face in? these kids are too serious for hardcore's good and for their own good.

kockrock_warlock_ 8/19/2004 12:24:26 PM

This exactly why lyrics get to much weighting and are overrated. This is good music to rock out to and enjoy no matter what the message. It has become way to trendy to dislike a band because of a lyric/message or how they look. Just listen to the f*cking music, and take it for what it is.

fuckyouagain_ 8/19/2004 12:44:20 PM

boring predictable worthless. there are more fun things to rock out to and have fun with.

-walkertexassrangler-_ 8/19/2004 1:39:38 PM

I bought this disc at a live show in PA and I think it brings the mosh hard. I am not sxe so the lyrics mean nothing to me but then again, I like Throwdown too.

alfdal_ 8/19/2004 4:03:43 PM

what a worthless band.

brad_ 8/19/2004 5:37:00 PM

what a worthless comment

xspecsx_ 8/19/2004 7:52:13 PM

i for one love this cd, whether any of you do or not, music hits different people in different ways and should not be reviewed good or bad, because it is what each of us get out of the music that makes it special. i love every song on this album, blast me on the net for saying so, but it deserves a lot more credit than you guys are giving it. its true that a pothead never says "smoke up or die" because they are usually too busy saying "hey lets go start a band after this bowl" and then never get

douchebag_ 8/19/2004 8:07:36 PM

that's f*cking funny!!! you're absolutely right. there are also people who like every song on a linkin park cd.

XdavidX_ 8/20/2004 1:06:04 AM

First off I gotta say you gave a good review, atleast you didn't cop out and say it's shit without telling us about the music. But putting on a few bits and pieces from the lyrics from each song completely distorts the message in the song. No, they might not be the most articulate, and yes some of it is trying too hard to be the toughest band aroung, but compared to a lot of straightedge bands coming out today they shine. But as far as several of the songs they do say something positive and if

Ash_ 8/20/2004 1:30:04 AM

Thanks for the complement. But if anyone is that concerned about the positive side of smash your face in lyrics, then they can go buy this themselves. I know plenty of people who would, just not me.

jarrett_ 8/20/2004 3:21:01 AM

this band deserves so much credit for their hard work and dedication to hardcore. none of you have any idea. this band is amazing in every aspect and this album is amazing...like no other ive heard before. so im going to have to disagree with the reviewer and ask that you pick this album up...you will not regret it.

spin_ 8/20/2004 4:57:35 AM

god you f*cking straight edge scenesters make me want to go on a drunken rampage and smite you all. u guys are such f*cking gays, i have more respect for christian bands than for you queers. thanks for the honest review. it just shows that this straight edge bullshit is just another f*ckin fad. "IF YOU WANT TO GET TOUGH, GET TOUGH MOTHERf*ckER!!!" laugh.

Ash_ 8/20/2004 10:14:16 AM

What is with you guys? Apparently everyone in favor of this album thinks it should be reviewed on the merits of the band members and how hard they work. EVERY BAND WORKS HARD!!! The review is on the CD, not the individuals in the band. The music is decent, yet the same, song after song, that got the review 4 points. And that's where it stopped. I don't give two shits if these guys are good people, how hard they worked, or whether or not they're edge. I reviewed the CD!

Normal Jeans_ 8/20/2004 11:38:16 AM

Shhh, you might get beat up if you talk that way. Good job with the review, couldn't agree more. Hopefully less and less bands will keep recycling riffs and emulating their Hatebreed CD's and start writing stuff with a little more artistic creativity. I haven't heard the whole album, but I think after listening to 30 seconds of the mp3, I have a pretty good idea as to where this is going.

xspecsx_ 8/20/2004 2:55:47 PM

i love how this went from a review and comment board to a "f*ck you straight edge gays with your fad" page. it was a good review because he didnt hold back and gave his honest opinion, whether or not you are in favor of the review dont bash "ash" for doing his job. and as for bashing edge, thats like bashing someone for saying "BLACK IS BETTER THAN BLUE" let it go, have fun, be open minded.

Ash_ 8/20/2004 3:07:58 PM

I knew the floor would give out on this one. Thanks xspecsx

d tawt_ 8/20/2004 7:17:12 PM

there's way too much bashing this review and not enough bashing the Mastodon review. This review hit the nail on the head, but the Mastodon reviewer doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

a_new_religion_ 8/20/2004 10:55:09 PM

well that "Get tough motherf*cker" song is my favorite track. its heavy. i guess you just have to actually like hardcore to appreciate it.

vxe_ 8/21/2004 5:50:45 PM

whatever... if you want groundbreaking musical heroism then listen to fantasy metal. leave hardcore for us kids with minimal talent and a lot of anger. i dont want to have to be a scientist or brain wizard to get into a hardcore band anyway (but it is nice to have some thought provoking lyrics). At least the review was honest and took into account both the tunes and the 'tude. i think thats more than you can expect from most nowadays.

Blake_ 8/22/2004 5:30:54 AM

shitty music, shitty lyrics

qwertyq_ 8/22/2004 1:09:25 PM

saw these dudes live. They were pretty cool people. The one singer who looked like vin diesel beat the shit out of some anti-sxe or whatever kid. I dont blame him. Its not a bad cd. I would have given it a 5 or 6 maybe, including the live show review. And dont bash sxe kids, im not sxe but they will live longer and have a better life than you will chugging back all that bottled poison and smoke.

you_in_hawk_country_now_ 8/22/2004 3:23:32 PM

"there has been a change in my body and a change in my mind. and i do have a change of heart, i finally found the time. With all of my heart, it's time to let go." The lyrics are only about "straight edge and/or smashing someone's face in", right? "no sensitivity"? clever, but not accurate. ash levitt, you would suck shit at flipping a burger.

Boy With No Arms._ 10/25/2004 4:09:35 PM

well. the rating was unfair. i would have give this cd an 8. This cd is good mosh sXe hardcore played the way it should be. about the lyrical content i think its a little poor but again, it is sxe mosh hxc and it goes really well with the music. so, buy this with the mentality that its not some pretentious converge rip off band. and if youre sxe (like i am) you will enjoy the lyrics even if they're not about how broken your heart is and how your dead girlfriends body is. and if youre not sxe yo

Jay_ 1/23/2005 2:05:01 PM

recently I was at a hardcore show in Cedar Falls at the Reverb (StabCorp) and I talked to a vocalist that was in this band and we talked about straightedge and hardcore music and had a good time. Now that I see your "Bottom Line" on this website it is disappointing because although I am not straightedge the vocalist was really cool to me. I love this band and I love what theyre doing in the hardcore scene. keep it hardcore.

Kayvon_ 2/11/2005 9:17:19 PM

wtf? shittiest review ever... the cds awesome

xadfx_ 2/15/2005 12:27:59 PM

I'm pretty sure the funniest thing I've read is the reference to garbage like Love Is Red being "unique". What the f*ck?

tdfxMakrxtdf_ 4/4/2005 2:25:20 PM

solid release does have some crappy parts but more good then bad i give it a 8/10 good cd overall

responsible_ 4/8/2005 11:54:45 AM

TPTD is banned from almost every venue in Minneapolis, because their music and their actions instigate fighting. Way to be positive, not. It's over the top in your face. Believe in what you want, but don't make threats to prove your militance. Lame band, lame album.

Kenny_ 5/11/2005 11:10:22 AM

This cd is f*cking sweet no matter what anyone says.

chris_ 7/26/2006 10:07:50 PM

4 out of 10. im sorry but thats bullshit dude. most definitely at least 7 man. FOUR. thats totally wrong. whoevers rating them must b doin' crack. i personally give them a 8 tho. there f*ckin sweet.

If you like this record, listen to it, if you dont, dont, simple! I like it alot, heavy as f*ck. As for the msg, everyone has their way of putting their opinions across, sometimes the truth is corny, who cares.
