The simple passing of a demo tape by guitarist Matt Fox to an acquaintance in Revelation Records' mail-order department began the explosive career of Shai Hulud, along with Revelation's imprint label, Crisis Records (headed by Rob Moran, formerly of Unbroken). At that time, the Florida based band included Damien Moyal (ex-Morning Again, Culture, As Friends Rust) on vocals, but Moyal and Shai Hulud parted ways before signing with the labels. The line-up would be soon completed with a young Chad Gilbert (now with New Found Glory) taking over vocal duties. Building upon the fundamentals of hardcore (power chords, mosh riffs), Shai Hulud incorporates catchy chord arrangements and melody into its music to produce a sound uniquely its own. The band's lyrics go hand in hand with the music, addressing the struggles and frustrations of life, as well as perseverance (but all are open to personal interpretation). Since then, the band has gone on numerous tour with a number of high-profile acts, including Poison the Well, Stretch Arm Strong, Bane, and Most Precious Blood (ex-Indecision). Shai Hulud released its debut CDEP on Revelation/Crisis in 1997, 'A Profound Hatred of Man.' Since then, the band has also released its full-length debut, 'Hearts Once Nourished With Hope and Compassion,' (Rev/Crisis), as well as splits with New York's Indecision ('The Fall of Every Man' in 1998 on Rev/Crisis), Delaware's Boy Sets Fire (Crush 'em All-A Metallica Tribute on Undecided Records), and New York's Another Victim ('A Whole New Level of Sickness' on Trustkill, 2000). The band has also showed up on tribute discs to Bad Brains and Negative Approach. Since Shai Hulud's inception, the band has gone through several line-up changes, the most notable one on vocals, where the band recruited Geert Van Der Velde from a tour in Europe. Moreover, the band relocated to Poughkeepsie, New York, to further bolster its career and find its elusive full-time drummer (drum machine, anyone?). The band is currently finishing up its forthcoming second full-length, 'That Within Blood Ill-Tempered,' slated to be released in early-2003. Members of Shai Hulud can also be found in a side project band, Zombie Apocalypse. Furthermore, guitarist Matt Fox also runs his own record label, Ides of March. hide
